Description

A fast-paced story of love and peril during the aborted 1989 coup in the Philippines against President Corazon Aquino

In the Philippines in 1989, a group of westerners get trapped in a hotel while a coup against the President of the Philippines, Corazon Aquino, is taking place. With their lives on the line, they plan their escape. Amid the action, however, there is also a love story between a young American expat caught up in the turmoil and the local bar girl that he loves.

The main events are historically accurate and the reader will find themselves immersed in a world where vast economic inequalities condition the interactions of people of very different backgrounds. Behind the adventure is a deep and powerful examination of the exploitation of the Philippines and its people, particularly those in the sex trade, by westerners. A condition made possible by massive economic imbalance.

This is a captivating novel for anyone who is interested in the Philippines or are just looking for a great read. This is the third thriller by Terence Gallagher, author of Fujita 4 and Analyst Session

About the Author

Terence is a keen cyclist and a reluctant gardener.

I didn’t know about the attempted coup in 1989 as I was too young to be paying attention (or too self-absorbed as a teen). I found this book fascinating. The descriptions of the poverty and class divisions in the Philippines were harsh but accurate. The story itself had well developed characters and was evenly paced so you get a good idea of what is going on and actual details about the coup as it happened. The characters themselves were likeable where they were supposed to be and equally abhorrent as needed. Quick and well researched glimpse into a point in history that I was curious about.
