"The storytelling is tense, taut, and emotionally resonant...[Romera and Standal] excel at depicting hard lives, addiction and desperation...The conclusion proves satisfying, though new readers are advised to start with the first collection...The knockout conclusion of a smart and humane graphic novel crime series."

―Booklife

"A graphic novel that steals your attention from start to finish."

"Standal has great range as a writer"

―Fanbase Press

"C.J. [Standal] is good at breaking down people, and situations, to where we feel for them and can even imagine ourselves in their situations."

―Comic Booked

"Romera's artwork reminds us of David Mazzuchelli on Batman: Year One crossed with the late and lamented Darwyn Cook, all bold but simple brushstrokes and strong shadow work giving life to each panel."

―Pipedream Comics

"The artwork by Juan Romera did not disappoint. The scenes provide easily interpretable body language and facial expressions...Although printed in black and white, I can almost see the redness of the blood."

―Readers' Favorite

"Rebirth of a Gangster by CJ Standal is a book that is one part tragedy, one part redemption, and all parts gripping. It's a dark graphic novel filled with twists, death, and intrigues, but with a surprisingly uplifting message."

I received a free ARC, and this review is voluntary

The basis of the story follows Marcus and Hunter, whose families share a history together, unbeknownst to them. More characters are introduced into the story as it unfolds, and we see the importance of their presence. It's a crime-drama, featuring an array of well written characters, with a compelling story.

The length upfront can seem like a lot, but each chapter is worth the read. It's suspenseful, and well worth the commitment.

My thanks to the publisher, the author and NetGalley for the ARC. I had the good fortune of reading Act 1: Meet the Family as a review copy last year but had issues with the copy provided that was difficult to open. I am happy that the copy part had been addressed this time with this copy of the full story opening with ease and helping engage with the story.
This is a lovely mammoth volume with nice crisp black and white art. The cover page in color provide a lovely contrast. The stark lines looks clean, hard-hitting and fabulous. The story is dark and the characters are interesting. The story of Marcus and Hunter with their shared family histories and the familiar but dark crime drama unfolds with constant steadiness. There is a wonderful array of characters and some of them are worth investing in and are well written. Throughout the volume there is a thin laced humor that doesn't overwhelm the story.

The size of the volume is intimidating for a graphic novel but the stories are episodic and segregated which helps in working forward with the story.

Recommended.

REBIRTH OF THE GANGSTER: A gritty, hard-hitting graphic novel that is the perfect advocate for the medium of GNs.
There is a thing I like to say about animation and comics/graphic novels: they are not genres, but mediums. Because they can tell any kind of story for any kind of audience. CJ Standal has certainly proven this with his graphic novel called REBIRTH OF THE GANGSTER
Telling the story of Marcus and Hunter, two people from different families whose lives get intertwined at some point, REBIRTH OF THE GANGSTER pulls absolutely no punches in its aim. Readers will laugh, cry, rage, and feel for the characters, as their saga of blood, crime, power and corruption unfolds. The art is really good in glorious black-and-white, and the story is decidedly mature. It reminds me of action/crime films in the 90s. I loved this! Ten outta five!

Whoa boy, this was dark. This is a collection of stories about these people and how they are interrelated, and it's so easy to see how the darkness ended up being inevitable. A lot of the storytelling was done through the graphic art, which was amazing. I kept wanting things to turn out differently because it was dark but it didn't seem fair. The people weren't likeable but I still wanted things to turn around for them. This is impressive storytelling. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this.
