4.5 stars
What a handy manual! Black and Decker is an iconic brand for tools, so I expect nothing less than amazing step-by-step instructions, and they delivered in this one. I particularly learned a ton in the drywall finishing section, which has always been a pain point for my husband and I, and usually ends up being something we hire a pro for. After reading the tips in this book, though, I'd be willing to try my hand at it again!
The only things I knocked partial stars off for was a few very unrealistic conversions for basements and minimal tips on installing garage systems. I can't imagine anyone would really install a bowling alley in the basement on their own, or want to make all their partition walls out of glass so it looks like you're walking through an office building instead of a home.
Overall, this book is great as an instruction manual for basics of converting and finishing a basement or garage!
4.5/5 stars. As a first time home owner finishing a basement I was drawn to this book to see if it had useful information for me - for real life application. I am not a trades person or “handy” person, but I have some experience. This book made concepts and projects look do-able. Not only with descriptions but with tons of pictures, which for me is my preferred way of learning things. I enjoyed all the different step by step explanations and seeing different ideas and potential trouble shooting ideas as well. I wish I had this book when I started my renovations! It’s difficult to make a book that encompasses each city or places specific bylaws and rules, so for some of it, it’s not applicable for me, but the book does refer you back to your own bylaws and policies.
