The psalms help us to find refuge in God in the midst of trouble, and model how we can respond to the ups and downs of life in the context of our covenant relationship with him.
Showing not only how each psalm might be read or preached, but also how it could be prayed, sung or used in pastoral and self-care, Tim Chester invites us to engage deeply with this poetic Scripture and learn how we can find the voice of Christ at the centre of it.

Once more a mature and yet accessible look at scripture, the introduction to this book is somewhat shorter than the previous ones which works well as each psalm has its own exposure. The verses and different section of each psalm are detailed with reference to the wider biblical texts and the contemporary world of the author. The imagery is well explained and even the potential feeling of the author is covered helping bring the psalms to life and make them resonate more clearly. The psalms are well researched and the wider references are useful for wider reading although it is the links within scripture that really helped me see the psalms and their different patterns so well.
I received an arc from NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.
What a great study guide to be used to walk through the Psalms. Easy to follow and great for taking notes on the Psalms.
This devotional/study guide is definitely something I would purchase. The guide applies applicable stories and additional scripture references. Easy guide for the early Christian as well.
A extensive commentary on Psalms 42-89, including line-by-line analysis to help us better understand. This book analyses the various ways we can read these lyrical Scriptures and provides guidance on how to sing, pray, teach, and meditate on each psalm. The NIV text for each psalm is included alongside the discussion and can be used to deepen personal understanding, teach, or improve preaching. The psalms are ideal for guiding us through tough times through Christ, and this book shows us how to apply the principles to modern-day life.
This was a pretty good Bible Commentary. I was hesitant about this because I've never heard of the writers, but I was impressed.
The Psalms are so interesting and I really enjoyed diving deeper into them to learn more than just the surface information.
I learned a lot from this and would recommend it to anyone looking for a new Bible Commentary.

The Hodder Bible Commentary: Psalms 42-89 is an exposition of the psalms. The thorough explanation of each psalm and the context around it was really enlightening for me. This was a deep-dive into the psalms, without sounding like a college text book. The only other comment I have, is that I personally prefer the NKJV over the NIV. This is not a complaint, though, and the use of the NIV does make this a little more accessible and easier to read.
I gave The Hodder Bible Commentary: Psalms 42-89 a rating of 4/5 stars. Highly recommend for anyone interested in getting deeper into the Psalms than your typical Sunday sermon.
Thank you to NetGalley, Tim Chester, and John Murray Press for the opportunity to read the ARC of this book. A review was not required, and all opinions expressed are my own.
A beautiful commentary on the Psalms like you've never seen it before. This will really help you understand this often quoted yet often misunderstood and misapplied portion of scripture. The Psalms are deeper than we realise and necessary for every day life.
I found this commentary to be very helpful in my personal study of the Psalms. I like that it included lots of wisdom from classic Protestant thinkers, as well as from faith leaders working in a variety of cultural contexts today. The writing was straightforward and easy to understand without feeling dumbed down.
The writer’s theological conclusions didn’t always align with mine. There were some Calvinist interpretations that I didn’t agree with. The writer also always circles back to how each psalm ultimately points to Christ, which can be inspiring, but for some I wish there had been more time spent on how the original writer might have intended them.
Still, I would recommend this to anyone wishing to dive deeper into the Psalms. Overall, I found it to be a useful study tool, and I feel wiser for having read it.
