Description
A tender and lyrical story celebrating the natural world and our place within it, Wild Trails to the Sea follows a coastal family as seasons change and children grow. With a hopeful refrain, a parent shares their dreams for their young ones, urging them to pay attention to every bit of magic the world has to offer, from watching a mayflower bloom to skipping pebbles on an icy pond, encouraging a lifelong love of natural spaces.
Told in gentle free-verse with luminous, tactile illustrations, this nostalgic story celebrates raising children in the great outdoors and will leave them enchanted with the lemon-burst of spruce tips, the steam of saltwater bonfires, and white rocks as vast as the moon.
Advance Praise
On top of the charming text, Wild Trails to the Sea boasts artist Elena Skoreyko Wagner’s paper collages. Every page of this picture book is richly filled with warm colours and varying textures, and intimate attention is paid to detail, such as a coffee mug on a window ledge or a solo rainboot lying scattered on the floor.
Each scrap of paper plays a part in how the visuals pop, and, regardless of whether it’s strands of a child’s wind-blown hair or bear cubs playing by the water, the art moves and flows. The combination of engrossing art and whimsical text creates a fresh, bright, exciting picture book. While this reviewer isn’t particularly into hiking or camping, the collages capture the beauty of the outdoor settings in a way that had me slowly scanning to decipher each tiny facet and how it contributes to the overall aesthetic and the vibrancy of each scene.

The illustrator of this picture book is Elena Skoreyko Wagner. The illustrations look like paper cut outs layered to create a photo like effect. Just visually textured and stunning.
This delightful picture book is about a family exploring the path through the woods to the sea. It continues through the years and the seasons. This explores the animals they see, the food they eat, the nature they explore and the games they play together. It's sweet and inviting. Featuring vibrant pictures and sparse dialogue which is perfect for newish readers. Allowing them to find and read the words they already know. My grandkids loved this!

Take an adventure or peacefully stroll through nature in this book. Through a layered and textured art style, the beauty of nature is conveyed. The book encourages us to be present in the moment. To slow down and enjoy everything the seasons have to offer.
I really liked the flow of this one. I can see this being a great story time book for my library.
This book speaks to me as I too spent many childhood hours in the wilds of Nova Scotia. I think the repetitive prose of the author hoping the reader can share the magic that they experienced throughout Nova Scotia. I also LOVED the illustrations! The mixed media and bright vibrant colors bring the scenes to life.
I loved every part of this book. The words were incredibly touching. As a mom, it captures all the things I hope for my kids. The pictures were interesting and tell their own story. This would be a wonderful book for a classroom, a new parent, or just anytime who wants to feel joy.
This book, filled with gorgeous illustrations will become a family favorite before bed. The seashore is explored during an afternoon of sand, sea, and fun. Each page is filled with breezy whimsical beachgoers, finding shells, watching waves, soaking up the sunshine, and becoming the dreams of a beach vacation to come or reminders of sandy vacations past.
