The sudden death of Iris Grant’s great uncle Petroc gives an ominous new meaning to his warning about strange events on the isolated Cornish island of Morgarrow. There are plenty of suspects to choose between. Bernard White, the chair of the abbey trustees, wants to build a timeshare resort on the island, aided by his accomplice Roddy Chatham. Local landowner George Pengelly needs the money from selling his land in this deal. And then there is Iris’s ex Jake Fletcher who is enraged at being dumped and believes he will inherit her property on the island, while the real heir is Annis Radford, Iris’s next-door neighbour. But when a further murder takes place, it seems that none of these could be the suspect.
Gawaine is convinced if only he could work out why Iris was mysteriously wandering around the abbey grounds at midnight, he will be able to find the solution to the crime and reveal the killer.

A strange story bringing Gawaine St. Clair to an island to help an acquaintance.
When Iris is bequeathed an entire island after the death of her Great Uncle she is afraid and anxious rather than thrilled. Something must have happened to Petroc. Why did he change his mind? Gawaine descends upon the Cornish island to solve the mystery before death strikes again. But can he save Iris? and the island?

Cherith Baldry's amateur sleuth Gawaine St Clair returns in this intriguing new mystery. If I didn't know otherwise I would have guessed it was written during the Golden Age of Crime Fiction. It benefits greatly from the same quality of writing and style as the best novels from that era and is full of welcome and recognisable tropes.
I love the setting of the small isolated (fictional) Cornish island of Morgarrow. It gives the plot an almost 'locked room' aspect. There's stolen artefacts, changed wills, cryptic post-it notes, a sudden storm trapping everyone on the island, and plenty of clues all aimed at misleading the reader - and it works, it works perfectly. The characters aid and abet the deception vigorously.
A return to traditional storytelling values which fans of good Crime Fiction will undoubtedly embrace and admire.
