Description
Eloise held her brand new baby daughter to her breast and felt her heart break at the thought she would never see her grow up, never know her at all.
When Eloise, a young American girl, meets handsome Dr Thomas Norton in the boiling Boston summer of 1890 she believes herself to be in love. But Eloise soon finds herself in a desperate situation that could see her alienated from her family and all of Boston society.
With her maid and confidant, Rosie, she travels to Devon, England, where her life is changed forever. Forced to take a heartbreaking decision she returns to the USA where she tries to resume her previous life. But the trauma she has experienced threatens to deny her any future happiness until she finds love from an unexpected source.
Will Eloise be able to grasp the opportunity to find closure for her broken heart?
Advance Praise
"In this compelling love story set against the backdrop of 1890’s Boston and a village in Devon, the author skillfully weaves together the past and the present through the view points of different characters. This book is not only a story about love but a narrative that explores the complexities of society, feminism, class and the resilience of the human spirit. A powerful gripping tale that I was unable to put down! I would definitely recommend this book!" - Goodreads review
"I loved this book, it captured my imagination from the start. The characters are well drawn and the storyline keeps you engaged and interested. The book, though set in Boston USA and Devon UK in the 1890’s, explores important contemporary themes, not least the way women seek to find fulfilment within a male dominated world." - Amazon review

The story was well written. I read it in a few days. Love, loss and strength.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Across the ocean and all alone at a hotel in Denvon, Eloise holds her baby daughter for the last time before leaving her to be found and taken in by a family in the village.
Eloise will go from a naive and trusting girl to a mother sacrificing her happiness for her daughters, to a woman trying to assemble a life for herself.
With an incredibly compelling protagonist in Eloise I fell in love with this heartfelt story. There is a bit of switching perspectives and timelines but it was well marked and well done and really flushed out the story. I also appreciated how historical realities were handled. The author worked with the practicalities and limitations that 1890’s society would have imposed and crafted a loving story within them. This is truly a gem of a story. Thank you to @troubador_publishing and @netgalley for letting me read #theweightofherheart a little early in exchange for a review.

What happens to a young priveleged woman in the late 1800's when a respected doctor takes advantage of her innocence ? Pregnant, she is sent to England to have her child and then returns home to try to take up her life again. Society norms at that time shows a young woman at that time struggling to live as if nothing had happened. Fascinating read that I thoroughly enjoyed, I will definitely recommend.
