Description

Learn how to grow your own food supply with advice from a survival skills expert. This essential guide includes how to choose and grow the most nutrient-dense crops without store-bought amendments or fertilizers, how to plan for a nonstop supply, how to store food, and how to create your own seed bank.

Whether we like it or not, the next pandemic—with the same types of supply chain disruptions that came with the last one—is likely to be just around the corner. In addition to stocking up on toilet paper and making sourdough bread, we can all become more resilient in the face of global crises by learning to grow our own food. Author Sam Coffman shows you how to select and grow the most valuable crops—those that offer the most nutrients and the biggest harvest with the least amount of effort, and are the easiest to save seed from—in the least amount of space, using few or no store-bought amendments. He also shows you how to grow food quickly (in as little as five days) in an emergency situation, choose and plant perennial food plants for longer-term harvest, grow mushrooms, forage from the backyard, and store food for the long term.

Survival Gardening does what it promises; teaches you and prepares you for (survival) gardening.
The keeping of rabbits or parts of the foraging do not personally appeal to me, and I certainly know little about gardening, foraging and farming, though I found this book to be a useful, engaging and easy-to-follow book to improve my gardening skills and keep as a reference.

I want to preface my review by sharing that I'm not a prepper, but I do like to grow a lot of my own food. I found this book to be really informative and helpful. The photos included in instructions clearly illustrated the point and I thought the descriptions were accessible, even for folks who may not already garden very much. I really appreciated the emphasis on how long things take to grow, because I think even for someone who isn't responding in a crisis, this gives new gardeners really good expectations for what timing will be like.

I definitely think this is a book I'd like to have on hand, and it would be most helpful as a physical copy!

Although Survival Gardening would make a fine addition to any library gardening or sustainable living collection, it seems ideal for the smaller library where every book needs to do double duty. Coffman manages to pack a huge amount of information into a small and accessible space, in many ways mirroring the small scale/sustainable yield techniques discussed on the page.

Leading the reader from the extremely basic first steps of growing food crops through to much more sophisticated techniques of land management with a reassuring tone and excellent photographs, Survival Gardening will engage those who are just starting out as well as those who have been exploring off grid sustainability for years. A perfect companion book for readers of Mother Earth News or MaryJane's Farm, and an excellent addition to any library collection! Thank you to NetGalley for access to this informative arc.

This book has everything you could imagine when it comes to Survival Gardening. It covers the many ways of composting, how to make different types of gardening beds, and a few recipes on what you can make with some of the unique plants you grow. I learned of all sorts of ideas and some of these I had never heard of before.

This book has a ton of ideas and methods for gardening. I think is one of the best gardening books out there.

Survival Gardening

Knowing you have a plan makes all the difference in the world. The author makes this subject so approachable, so doable.

Ideas are given to prepare now before a survival situation. Details are given what to do in order once a disaster strikes. That information is invaluable at making me feel calm and reassured. Having a list I can go to when I am already stressed is always a great idea.

The chapter in choosing what to grow solidified for me what options I want to think of. Nutrient rich options will be what I need to know about, and these pages gave me lots to think about. Irrigation, bed style, and fertilizing is also briefly covered.

I enjoyed this book and appreciated the concept of being prepared that this book covers.

We don’t know what lies ahead so we prepare for emergencies by purchasing insurance. While I believe insurance is important it will not feed us. It is up to each family to be prepared. Our household keeps at least a 3-month supply of food in the pantry but what will we do after 3 months? Author Sam Coffman has the solution. We must learn to grow our food and to preserve it. He discusses the need to look at crops that are healthy and provide the most nutrients. We also need crops that have a high yield. The crops we raise must have seed we can save for the next year…that means using heirloom seeds. The crops we raise need to be space saving. We may not have access to store bought foods. There is so much more to learn from this Sam Coffman in his book Survival Gardening.
