Description
READ 'THE SHADOW OVER LITTLE CHITALY', A SHORT STORY FROM ELIZA CLARK'S FIRST COLLECTION SHE'S ALWAYS HUNGRY
From the author of Penance and Boy Parts
A teenager longs for perfect skin. A scientist tends to fragile alien flora. A young man takes the night into his own hands. Each of these characters has a desperate desire. Can any of them be sated?
Unsettling, revelatory, and laced with her signature dark humour, Eliza Clark's debut short story collection plumbs the depths of that most basic human feeling: hunger.

I absolutely loved this short peek at She's Always Hungry. Eliza Clark is one of the best, most engaging and singular writers around. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a sneak peek!
Eliza Clark is one of my favourite authors so I was so excited to receive this sample. Can’t wait to get my hands on the full version of this intriguing short story collection!
So thankful to receive this little sample short story from Eliza Clark's new collection. I love love adore obsess over Boy Parts and Penance so cannot wait until this comes out so I can read the rest.
This sample was so bizarre but I need to know more!! I really loved Penance and was delighted to hear Eliza Clark was back, can’t wait to get my hands on the full version of this intriguing short story collection!
This title is one of the short stories from Clark's upcoming She's Always Hungry. I absolutely loved this weird little story! Told through JustEat reviews for a Chinese-Italian takeway, this story is inventive and strange and totally compelling. Consider me hyped for the full book in November.
I love Eliza Clark and her writing in this is exceptional yet again! Dark humour, clever prose, just perfection.
I can’t wait to actually read the full book! This is only one excerpt from the novel - rather than the whole book. So it definitely left me leaving more.
Love Eliza, love the writing, hate that this is just an excerpt. I need the rest of the book immediately!!
I’m not usually a fan of short stories because they cut off right when you’re invested but for Eliza Clark, you make the exception, right?
Well, reader, it happened again, I got fully invested in the story and it ended, the excerpt ended and I wanted to continue reading the rest of the book. Except this time I’m not upset, I’m very excited for November 7th, when this releases so that I can devour this in its entirety!
Thank you so much to Faber & Faber for the chance to read this excerpt before the book is released! 🩷❤️ #NetGalley #ShesAlwaysHungry
Eliza Clark's debut short story collection promises to "plumb the depths of that most basic human feeling: hunger", and I think it's kind of genius that the first and only story granted to us lucky few successful ARC applicants is this short and sweet little nugget, composed entirely of increasingly surreal online reviews for a Chinese-Italian fusion restaurant which may or may not exist, and which is almost certainly run by white/tan/blonde and beachy Australian cultists if it does. It's not as overtly dark as either of Clark's previous novels - both of which I've loved - but its absurdism and its ambiguity hint at darker things to come.
An amazing excerpt of Eliza Clark's next title - the short story is funny in its portrayal of the different characters' confused reviews, yet has an unsettling undertone and fantastical elements. Can't wait to read the rest!
I really enjoyed the short story excerpted from this book that was included in the download. It was masterfully written with a sense of mystery and unease, and the characters’ voices felt so real! I’m a big fan of this author and can’t wait to read the whole book!
The short story 'The Shadow Over Little Chitaly' is absolutely hilarious. Told through the form of confused and bewildered reviews it made me laugh out loud on the train. Cannot wait to read the full collection.
5 stars but i genuinely don't think it could be anything less. if this is indicative of the full book i am so excited for it. SOOOO disappointed though that this is not the full book...
This was an excellent short story, bizarre and eerie, compelling and moreish. I absolutely can't wait to get my hands on the full collection!
Weird, charming and intriguing. Everything I love about Eliza Clark. Can’t wait to read the full thing!
IM READY FOR THE WHOLE BOOK NOW. ELIZA CLARK NEVER FAILS!!!

Autobuy author who always lives up to my expectations
Excellent, original, very clever and very creepy. The story presents itself through a series of reviews (and some people review more than twice), throwing hints right and left about a mysterious takeaway place which combines Italian and Chinese cuisine. It's brimming with dark humor and cruel intelligence. I really hope this is inciative of the whole collection's quality - if so, we' ll have a masterpiece on our hands!
Eliza Clark still amaze me like the first time. With just a short and weird story Clark’s work I’ve remember the power of shorts stories and definitely shows her talent writing them. It let me wanting more!
I really enjoyed the sample short story that I read - The Shadow Over Little Chitaly. The format of the story was unusual, being told entirely through the medium of food delivery app reviews, but a strange and amusing picture gradually emerged.
I’d like to read the rest of the stories in the collection and am looking forward to publication in November..
'The Shadow over Little Chitaly'
Eliza Clark you never fail to amaze me. This short story is told through restaurant reviews for a peculiar takeaway spot called 'Little Chitaly', who seems to serve Italian/chinese fusion and delivered by an super speed Aussie dude. But as guests soon see, theres clearly a twist. Clark has such an authentic and engaging comic voice which ultimately pulls this whole text together. She is able to avoid the online writing cliche's by actually just being f*cking hilarious. ('They can suck my big clitaly' is a fave). You would wonder how she's able to create characters and a storyline through a bunch of restaurant reviews, and yet she does it! And it's fun!
Im SO ready to pounce on this when it comes out in November - im normally an avoider of short stories collection but i'm hooked already give me more!
As a big fan of Boy Parts, I knew as soon as I saw this I wanted to read it. The arc is one of the short stories; which is in the format of Google reviews of a mysterious 'Chitalian' (that's Chinese/Italian) fusion restaurant. In particular, one patron who keeps going back for more. Loved the format, very unique and unexpected, didn't know I would feel so creeped out from reading Google Reviews! I'm super intrigued to read the rest of these stories and can't wait for the book to release!
Omg so chilling! Read it so fast in one sitting and got myself scared to death.
Also funny because I’m italian and all the pizza references with wrong ingredients were soo funny
Sorry, this is genius! I adored Boy Parts and Penance but generally not the biggest fan of horror or short stories, so I wasn't sure if I would read the full collection, but now I definitely will be! Also, very excited that a fellow Rebecca in Durham was featured!
I haven't read any Eliza Clark books, but I couldn't resist the title, the cover, and the premise of She's Always Hungry! I mean, that's basically what I would write as my bio, if I had to.
The Shadow over Little Chitaly is so funny. It's dark, it's witty, it's gross, it's weird, but boy-oh-boy it's kind of perfect? I loved the format of restaurant reviews, and the returning customer that just obviously couldn't say no. The great thing about mixing up a format is the mixing of pace, and I loved that this quick sampler had me rushing through it to devour more.
This sampler, was an amuse bouche and I can't wait to gorge myself on the rest of the meal when She's Always Hungry is released. Yum.
What an interesting sample. The Shadow Over Chitaly is weird and creepy but also playful and I can tell the author had a lot of fun coming up with it. The format is unusual, but I was a big fan of the story’s structure. I love Eliza Clark’s writing so I’m very much looking forward to reading the rest of the short stories collection once it comes out. Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for this sneak peak.
I was given access to a sample from Eliza Clark's upcoming short story collection, a piece entitled "The Shadow over Little Chitaly' - I loved it. Clark's inventive narrative's structured as a series of reviews of the takeaway service provided by 'Little Chitaly' restaurant. It's a deceptively-simple concept but, as you might expect from Clark, it features a series of delicious twists - gradually shifting into the territory of the surreal and the absurd. I thought it was incredibly funny and incredibly clever. I'm desperate to read the rest of her stories.
From what I have read this book is going to be just as stunning and exciting as Eliza’s other books. Such a fantastic author and definitely one to keep an eye out for!
Thanks to NetGalley for sending me a snippet of the new book!
Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for a taster story. Completely unhinged and bizarre but a lot of fun. Absolutely loved this short story and cannot wait to read the rest of the collection!
I need more asap - so excited to read the whole thing. The unique format of this short story has enticed me in, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the full thing!!
Eliza Clark never misses in all the strange, ambitious and eloquent ways that her books give. SO EXCITED to read more!!!
I was kindly given a sample ARC of one of the stories in this collection (‘The Shadow Over Little Chitaly’) by Faber via NetGalley in return for an honest review. Whilst I haven’t yet read the full book, I am very excited for the full release!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Shadow Over Little Chitaly (one of the short stories within this new collection). Following the often absurd experiences of customers at a fictional Chinese-Italian fusion takeaway, this story was gripping and very original. Clark tells the story through a very unique narrative style by providing descriptions of meals, customer service experiences, and communication issues through a series of Google Reviews (or reviews on a similar platform). What I really enjoyed about this story was that it managed to push the bounds of acceptable reality whilst also being humorous (I laughed out loud on the bus whilst reading!).
(rating for sampler only, I have not read the whole book)
I was initially disappointed when I realized the sampler for She's Always Hungry was just one short story from the collection, "Little Chinitaly", but it's one of the most surprising, funny and disturbing stories I've ever read and I could not shut up telling people about it. I was really confused by the format, which is of reviews of a takeaway, but I felt like I was getting sucked in against my will into an obsession with the strange patterns emerging in the reviews from customers trying to make sense of their unsettling experiences of what seems like a very ordinary thing, ordering a big dirty takeaway. I loved her two novels and am so happy that she's taking the mix of formats she played with in Penance into her short fiction, it feels all very exciting.
Eliza Clark is certainly talented writer of dark fiction. I’ve read Boy Parts and Penance has been on my list for forever. This short story sampler reads excitingly and I can’t wait for the whole collection. It’s difficult to judge an entire collection based on a single story, but so far so good!
Be prepared for dark themes, dark humour and dark, tortured characters!
As a huge fan of weird short story collections, and after thoroughly enjoying Penance by Eliza Clark, I'm very excited for the full release of this book. The story 'The Shadow Over Little Chitaly' is fun, mysterious, bizarre and charming, and I love the way a narrative unfolded through a series of reviews, it felt so fresh and was a joy to read. I truly hope this is representative of the rest of the collection, and that is as strange and entertaining as this short story.
Dark and alluring Eliza Clark always manages to turn a story on its head. This is no exception, smart, feverish, epic.
Nobody is doing it like Eliza Clark. This first story was weird in the best way and I can't wait to read the rest of the collection.
This was bizarre and yet I kept wanting more, just like Chitaly. Hilarious addictive read, can’t wait for more.
Sublime and creepy. Its great to see Clark’’s versatility!
(More thoughts to come in the October issue of my newsletter)
Thank you Faber and Faber Ltd and NetGalley for the sampler of She's Always Hungry by Eliza Clark in exchange for my honest opinions!!
I became a fan of Eliza Clark after I read Boy Parts, so I was very excited about getting to read a part of her new book early. I really enjoyed the quirky story and can't wait to read more.
LOOOOOVED this. eliza clark is one of my favourite authors and after 'penance' was my favourite book of 2023, 'she's always hungry' became one of my most anticipated releases of 2024. this snippet was amazing and i cannot wait to read more when the book is released
I will devour anything and everything that Eliza Clark writes. I cannot wait to read the rest of these short stories! Eliza is truly a genius and I cannot wait to see what she does next.
Eliza Clark became an instant read for me the moment I read Boy Parts so I requested this before I knew what it was; the premise, the short stories and the fact, sadly, that it was a sampler! Alas, thoroughly enjoyed the first story: as ALWAYS with Clark, I laughed out loud. I repeated parts in my head; I shared the parts I loved; I hungered for more but also wanted to truly savour this. And that’s how I felt about a short story centred entirely on takeaway reviews - bring on the rest! 5 stars, always.
The ARC I have been kindly given only contained one of the short stories but I already know I will love the whole collection! If you love Black Mirror like I do, this one is for you!
Incredible short story, drop the whole collection please I can't wait until November!
Honestly think Eliza Clark is one of the smartest writers working in the UK and Ireland right now.
Well that was delightfully weird 😂 I need to know what Little Chitaly's response was.
So this is a sample of Eliza's new book which is a collection of short stories. So I do suspect that perhaps the cliffhanger may be how the story ends, and I'll never get my ending.
This first look was odd though. It was just a series of Justeat reviews.
Anyway. Won't be for everyone. You gotta be weird. I'm weird. Loved it. Thanks for the sample!
I LOVE Eliza Clarke and this sampler just made me even more excited for the new release! Interesting format too!
I LOVED this little peek into She's always hungry! It left me hungry for more - and i cant wait for this to come out so i can read the full thing.
This is definitely quite a unique short story in terms of the style, but now I really want to read the whole book!!
Thank you so much to the early access of this sampler! It’s safe to say that Eliza Clark is now firmly an auto-buy author for me, and after reading this teaser, this has intensified. I cannot wait to buy and read the full thing!!!
I’m not sure how to mark this as ‘partially’ read on goodreads, storygraph, Amazon but will definitely be posting about the sample on insta.
Thank you again!
The snippet I read was brilliant - weird and mysterious, told through JustEat reviews. However, when I requested this NetGalley did not say it was just a sample so you can imagine my disappointment!!
5 stars for Eliza Clarke though and can’t wait to read this in full.
Eliza Clark does it again!
I absolutely loved this short story. There is a lot to unpack here. It's very creative and manages to be both funny/silly and eerily peppered (pun intended) with an underlying sense of dread. An excellent portrayal of the absurdity of our society and the world we live in (both the physical world and the virtual internet world) Bonus points for the fact that the Instagram account mentioned in the story actually exists! I wish the whole book was on Netgalley and not just a sampler. I can't wait to read the whole book.
*Switches tabs and pre-orders book*
Very excited for the rest of the short stories in this collection. I found the sample story fun in both style and content, genuinely laugh out loud funny. Twisty and full of character!
Bizarre, witty and utterly strange, this sampler was very enticing and I cannot wait to read the full book.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the chance to read this sampler.
I'm always hungry for more Eliza Clark, one of the best modern authors with such a unique voice a dark humour that I love. This short story was exactly what I wanted, and I can't wait for the rest of the collection.
Very grateful that I got to read one of the short stories from this collection early and I really enjoyed it!
Instantly recognisable as Eliza Clark's writing, very weird and intriguing and nicely eases into the theme of the collection. This one was a bit more off-putting humour leaning, so I'm super excited to read the more horror leaning stories in November!
I was over the moon to have the opportunity to read this sampler of She’s Always Hungry by Eliza Clark. I am unable to resist Clarks work, I was a big fan of Boy Parts and have recently read Penance. This book is a collection of short stories and this sampler was a story called ‘The Shadow Over Little Chitaly’. Told in the format of JustEat reviews, I thought this was an interesting way of formatting the story but nevertheless, I was hooked. It was twisted, weird and yet so captivating. It makes me wonder what the rest of the collection is going to be like, I just can’t wait to get it.
Before receiving this sample, I had actually already pre-ordered the book. Now I have read this, it is making me very excited for the release!
I had the chance to read a sample from Eliza Clark's forthcoming short story collection, She's Always Hungry, and read the entirety of a piece called "The Shadow over Little Chitaly". From the first sentence, I was completely hooked. The story is framed as a series of reviews for a take-out restaurant named Little Chitaly, and while it starts off simple enough, Clark quickly weaves in unexpected layers and creates a complex web of oddity. As the reviews go on and the narrative unfolds, it veers into the surreal and absurd in the most delightful way, full of clever, unpredictable twists and turns. I found the story not only sharp and witty, but also unexpectedly funny. In a word, In a few words, I'd classify She's Always Hungry as weird and wonderful, and now I'm eagerly awaiting the rest of her collection.
Thank you to the publisher via NetGalley for providing me with a sampler of She's Always Hungry by Eliza Clark in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own and are not influenced by any third parties. #ShesAlwaysHungry #ElizaCLark #LitFic #LiteraryFiction #NetGalley

What a great little nugget to be teased with! The Shadow of Chitaly was absurd and fun. The story is written as a series of Google reviews, which was really neat. I'm very excited to read the other stories in this collection!
Wow, I can truly say that this is unlike anything I’ve ever read before- in a good way! I got the chance to read ‘The Shadow Over Little Chitaly’ and I was absolutely hooked. I really enjoyed the way in which the story was told purely through the use of reviews placed by users on Justeat. I found myself getting more and more curious as to why Little Chitaly does such strange mashups of Chinese/Italian/Indian food. I liked the fact that Hannah decided to do some investigating and try to work out what had happened but was left even more confused by the end.
I will definitely be getting a copy of this upon release as I just love books with quirky or weird stories and after reading this sampler, it’s clear I will thoroughly enjoy the rest of the book
This one short story -The Shadow Over Little Chitaly- from She’s Always Hungry had my undivided attention. I loved the formatting and style of this short story. At first I was unsure how the format would work in terms of story telling but it worked out really well. The Shadow Over Little Chitaly was unlike anything I’ve ever read before and I wish I had more She’s Always Hungry to read. I love Eliza Clark’s slightly unhinged plots and stories. Her delivery of story telling is always immaculate. I will definitely be getting this book to read when it is published.
Thanks so much to NetGalley and Faber and Faber LTD for a sampler of She's Always Hungry for an honest review. This story was so funny and amazing - I'm now ready to read the whole book!!
I already love this book just from this sampler. I love how Eliza Clark is playing with format and style and somehow manages to make me feel so much from the most mundane of things. Cant wait to read the whole collection.
How incredible will this book be if this 13-pages-pdf gave me the chills? I finished this sampler eager to keep reading about the story and wanting to know what was going on. And I'm usually a difficult person to love creepy stories.
Thank you so much NetGalley and Faber and Faber for the opportunity to read this! I adored it.
Absolutely fascinating what is available and I’m really excited to read the rest when it comes out.
There’s not much else to say as this was a sampler and not even the full chapter.
Thank you so much to Netgalley for a sample of Eliza Clarks new book.
I absolutely adored Eliza's previous works, Boy Parts and Penance, and can confidently say she is one of my favourite authors. I adore her storytelling and creativity, and always find myself completely compelled by her writing. This sample was only short, but straight away I need more. Already I can tell that this will be brilliant just like her previous works, and I am so excited for it's release. I already cannot wait for my preorder of this to arrive. I'm excited to see what else Eliza has in store for us.
