Description

Memories of the 70s can be painful… and sometimes healing.

In this page-turning portmanteau novel, Sonia Paige explores a timeline of chaos and chance as one character’s story subtly intertwines with another. Set on a Greek island and in Hackney, “a place where extraordinary things happen,” the story was inspired by the film The Saragossa Manuscript. “My inspiration was to try to write something like it, but set in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries with contemporary themes,” she explains.

In a snowy London, two women are in crisis following journeys that weave together unbeknownst to them. Other characters cross their paths in a web of storytelling that involves past and present, living and dead…

In a prison detox unit Corinne, a faded blond alcoholic, tells cellmates about her encounters with two men on a Greek beach in 1972. In a dimly-lit bedroom in Hackney, troubled archaeologist Anthea communes with ancient bones smuggled from a tomb site.

These two women never meet face-to-face, but they are affected by each other’s lives and choices. Their stories intertwine with a variety of characters who influence their destinies, including painter/decorator Duane, sexual adventuress Alex, Freddie the out-of-work musician, Mandy the shoplifter and Morton, who studies oral storytelling in Homer.

Like a latter-day Arabian Nights the tales are spicy and sometimes funny, with intriguing characters and an element of chance that spans this world and the next.

A Note From the Publisher

Sonia Paige has always loved and written stories, but until now it has been a private affair, “like dyeing my hair blonde and dancing in the kitchen,” she says. Following Pasolini, she believes that “the truth lies not in one but in many dreams”. Her novel offers some of hers, both good and bad.
