Description

On Being Fat… a journey with adipose tissue is an impassioned tale about how Pamela coped, and does cope, with being REALLY FAT. The story is wrapped around her taking early retirement from being a matron in mental health and moving to Crete in 2011 with the aim of ‘doing life differently’ and getting well.

Pamela takes the reader on her physical and psychological journey of travelling to another country and culture with her two Siamese cats; she was ill, morbidly obese, had never set foot on Greek soil, didn’t speak the language, had never driven on ‘the wrong side of the road’ – but was determined to succeed.

On Being Fat is her story; filled with humour, desperation, pathos and a serious message of what actually does go on when you’re really fat. It’s couched in incidents and emotion that will have readers laughing and crying in equal measure: outgrowing the shower and bath, falling over in the sea and not being able to get up. Falling over on her neighbour’s drive and using her face as a buffer. Sobbing because she hated herself so much; becoming incontinent because she was so fat; thinking of different ways to meet personal intimacy needs but trying to ‘keep calm and carry on’ within a world not fit for the purpose of the ‘spatially challenged’. Questioning how she had become this person who was now really fat and very poorly…and then, defying the safe route, by moving to a completely different country and culture to start Part Two of her life.

Pamela writes to you personally… the person sitting across the kitchen table from her, with a cup of tea or a glass of wine and a box of tissues. On Being Fat is a touching, emotive biography that will take readers through the many twists and turns of Pamela’s life.
