This is a really well-done children's book about the water cycle. The title "It Starts With A Raindrop" shows what the story will be talking about, and makes it feel interesting so kids will want to learn more. The descriptions/story and illustrations throughout are beautifully done. They work together to bring the complexities of the water system into an understandable process for children. The illustrations are really well done, and will keep kids hooked as they consider what this process looks like. Having the non-fiction section at the end was also helpful--kids can have some interesting facts to support what they just learned in the story!
I love that this story rhymes and is also educational but not overly complicated. The artwork is beautiful as well. Definitely a book that parents and children will both enjoy!
Oh my gosh. I loved this book. It’s short and simple and it’s so cute. It teaches you about where raindrops go and is perfect for a kindergarten or preschool classroom! Thank you so much for the ARC!
The illustrations in this picture book are absolutely stunning, and I loved the way the book was written lyrically but with so much information. This book is sure to teach kids about the water cycle in a fun and engaging way. Both of my children enjoyed this story!
This is a lovely, short picture book that describes the stages of the water cycle. Through beautiful illustrations and rhyming prose, this picture book engages the reader and teaches them about the different stages. The watercolor illustrations are beautiful and detailed. Highly recommend it for any teacher or parent.
Love, love, love such calming yet the prettiest picture books with playful words! I enjoy reading such books with the young ones singing (cos such good rhymes bring out a tune automatically!).
The illustrations are dreamlike perfection!
Thank you, words & pictures, for the ARC.
I honestly think this book is adorable. The illustrations have a beautiful, watercolor-like quality that adds to their charm. The story is simple, yet it's both informative and engaging for children.
This picture book would be a very good addition to any home or school library. The prose was flowy, and the rhyme was easy on the tongue, which are both important especially for early readers.
A definite must have!
Simple yet effective introduction to the water cycle. I could see myself reading this book in my preschool STEM storytime to explain precipitation. I also really enjoyed the illustrations, absolutely beautiful and highlights the diversity of different biomes in the world. The last page excites curiosity by circling back to the diversity in the world, while also explaining more about the water cycle when the child is ready to learn more. Very beautiful book!
This was such a cute book. It showed the water cycle in a way that was simple enough for toddlers and preschoolers to understand, and flowed very well being read out loud. The illustrations were well done as well. Overall, a great story.
What a glorious book for EYFS students. It is beautifully written and fittingly illustrated with dreamy watercolour paintings. It is a bit scanty on the information side but that is to be expected for a target readership of that age.
Such a special book about the cycle of water, with excellent depictions and good prose. This is both informative and meditative and can be enjoyed by younger and older audiences alike.
I loved the illustrations in this book, they were really stand out for me.
It is a well written book and I loved that the story rhymed.
The story teaches as well as being a good story so that is always going to be a plus for me as a mum.
I really enjoyed it as a parent and my daughter loved it.
It is 5 stars from me for this one - very highly recommended!
We absolutely love this series for our personal library. We have "It Starts with a Seed" and "It Starts with a Bee" which are both so wonderful for unit studies. This newest book "It Starts with a Raindrop" is my son's new favorite! The illustrations alone are absolutely stunning and the lyrical text has a smooth cadence as I read to my children. We will definitely be buying the physical copy when it is published. This is an excellent addition to this wonderful nature series and a MUST if you are a homeschool family wanting to add supplemental reading for your nature studies!
I adored reading this to my kids! The illustrations are beautiful and what a fun way to introduce the water cycle!
This book is a wonderful illustrated story that teaches young minds about the importance of rain and the water cycle. It Starts With a Raindrop shares a beautiful illustration of earth’s incredible creations.
Huge appreciation for the non-fiction section added at the end of the story to provide interesting facts for the kiddos! A perfect addition for teachers to have in their classrooms.
Few authors have the ability to take a complex scientific process and translate it in a way which even young children can understand. Aimee Gallagher was able to simply the cycle of water in this book, “It Starts With A Raindrop.”
With soft, pleasant rhymes Gallagher, along with the beautiful illustrations by Sally Garland, shows children how water cycles throughout earth and why we need it. Unlike many other authors, Gallagher doesn’t overwhelm children with the minutiae. With Garland’s help, she clearly shows the process, thereby avoiding confusion.
This is a really well thought out children’s book and one that will be an absolute joy for both children and their parents to read.
I received an ARC of “It Starts With A Raindrop” by Aimee Gallagher from NetGalley, Quarto Publishing Group, and words & pictures in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Being a ESL (English as a second language) teacher as well as a professional involved in reading programs, I read this book with using two different lenses and I loved it!
First of all, the fact that it rhymes makes this book perfect to be read aloud. In addition to that, the language used is rich, but presents simple grammar structures which is definitely a plus when reading it in an English Language class.
The story has a very good vibe to it because and the last two pages can prove extremely useful for kids interested in a more scientific approach.
Finally, I enjoyed the style of the pictures.
I’ll definitely buy this book!
Simple and educational, colorful and engaging, informative and calming, interesting and delightful. I am thankful for the opportunity to review this book.

Oh, my goodness! this is such a cute book. The illustrations are out of this world. I highly recommend this book to parents. There aren't a lot of words per page and the pictures are very entertaining. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to read this advanced reader copy.
Follow a tiny raindrop as it brings the world to life in this beautiful water cycle story, with gentle, rhyming text to read aloud.
Thank you Quarto Publishing Group & Netgalley for the digital ARC! I enjoyed reading this book and looking at the illustrations. This book is perfect for children who are wanting to learn about rain.
Wonderful explanation of the water cycle for early primary. Illustrations both beautiful and informative, being from Australia there’s no a lot of unfamiliar detail which is great. Love the way text flows with illustrations. Gorgeous book. Would be adding to our bookshelf.
"It Starts With a Raindrop" is a children's non-fiction picture book written by Aimee Gallagher and illustrated by Sally Garland.
What a beautiful book! The illustrations are lovely watercolor paintings of nature settings like the ocean with a whale breaching, geese flying in the sky, and kids building a snowman.
The text is all rhymed couplets like AA BB CC DD. One example: "Wherever rain falls, it drenches the earth
Turning it into a place of rebirth."
The end of the book has the entire book text printed on one page and then an adult version of the water cycle as well as a page about the three states of water. These pages could be helpful for parents or to help teach curious children a bit more advanced information.
I would have loved this book as a kid or to read to my son when he was young. I highly recommend this book for parents of young children or in a young elementary classroom or school library!
Thank you to Netgalley, Quarto Publishing Group, and Aimee Gallagher for providing this e-book in exchange for my honest review.
A fantastic tribute to the natural world around us. This book tells a story about rain, while also teaches young readers the mechanics of how rain works. Entertaining and educational.
I came across a copy of this book and was instantly drawn in by the beautiful and colourful illustrations - the copy I had was digital, but I can imagine this in print would be absolutely beautiful and could make such a stunning gift for someone! Both the story and the illustrations make this a beautiful children’s book 📕
I read the book with my 3.5 year old and we both enjoyed the rhyme, the accompanying illustrations and I particularly liked that it is an educational book as well, following the lifespan and some of the consequences of a raindrop. I think the rhyme helped even my 3.5 year old stay engaged on a usually quite dull subject (I was never a Geography fan) 😅 Throughout he was asking questions related to the pictures, so I knew he was engaged while reading.
A beautifully written and illustrated book that is educational too - genuinely an all-round good egg of a book! Happy Mama and a happy little boy. 💧🌧️
Loved the poem, ‘It Starts With a Raindrop’ by Aimee Gallagher. The book breaks down each line of the poem to its own page with cute sketch’s to go with it. At the end of the book it has the entire poem on one page then an extra page for older kids that talks a little bit more about the watch cycle.
Thank you NetGalley, Quarto Publishing Group - words & picture, and Aimee Gallagher for an eARC copy of ‘It Starts With a Raindrop’.
This was really cute! It was a quick read with fun rhyming and showed the importance and cycle of water in nature in a simple to understand way for kids.
The beautiful illustrations and compelling journey of the raindrop will have me reaching for this book time after time. What an amazing and lyrical way to teach the water cycle!
The water cycle for very young readers, and as a verse? A most successful and enjoyably rhyming verse, what's more? Accompanied by delightful nature watercolours, but also presented plain at the back so you can absorb the words without the visual distraction? And with a bonus, double-sized spread to close? I'm struggling to think of flaws here, so have gone down a surprising and weird rhetorical question route. I didn't think the poem flowed as well as the water at first – it seemed each spread had a kind of odd place in a kind of higgledy-piggledy structure, but it comes together by the finish, and the lesson is a delightful one all told. As close to five stars as makes no difference.
A visible poem that teaches the water cycle.
The illustrations by Sally Garland are clear, finely detailed (check out the monarch butterflies!), meaningful, and beautifully colored.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to EVERYONE, but especially to a school, hospital, or your local public library!
I requested and received a free temporary EARC on Adobe Digital Editions from Quarto Publishing Group – words & pictures | words & pictures via NetGalley. Thank you!
In addition to being a storybook, It Starts With A Raindrop by Aimee Gallagher is also a teaching book. In the story "It starts with a raindrop...", children will enjoy listening to how that raindrop creates a puddle, drenches the earth, creates blizzards and tropical storms, soaks the ground and fills the rivers, warms the water and turns it into steam, which rises and cools and forms clouds in the sky. A guide is included at the end of the book that details further into the topics "It Starts With a Raindrop", "The Water Cycle", and "The Three States Of Water".
