Description

On the anniversary of his seventieth college reunion, Jack Scott shares his inspirational life story.

Born in the dusty town of Sweetwater, Texas, Jack seemed destined for an ordinary life. Raised in a religiously devout family, he followed a common path for students in the 1950s, attending a private Christian college where he met his wife, Lacreta. Their loving marriage continued for sixty-six years, until Lacreta's passing in 2021. During his early preaching career, Jack was the minister for the Church of Christ in New Haven, Connecticut. After earning a master's degree in divinity from Yale Divinity School, Jack joined the faculty at Pepperdine College in Los Angeles. While at Pepperdine, he earned his PhD in American history from Claremont Graduate University. Following the school's move to Malibu, Jack transitioned to numerous roles, including Dean of Instruction at Orange Coast College, President of Cypress College, and finally President of Pasadena City College.

Jack's life has been a testament to resilience, marked by unexpected turns, including the heart-wrenching loss of an adult son in a tragic gun accident. Yet, Jack's spirit remained unbroken. He redirected his strength into public service, serving in the California State Assembly and as a senator. During his tenure, he led the Senate Committee on Education and the Senate Budget Subcommittee on Education, and Jack tirelessly championed legislation on mandatory gun safety equipment.

For Everything There Is a Season is a testament to Jack's remarkable journey, a story of faith, perseverance, and dedication to making a difference.

Advance Praise

"Remarkable is the word that comes to mind when I ponder Jack Scott's journey from a youthful defender of the one true church to his embrace of religious diversity; from a boy raised in the deeply racist world of the 1930s and 1940s into a committed anti-racist; and from his small-town West Texas roots to become a two-time college president, a California assemblyman, a California senator, and finally, the chancellor of the largest community college system in the world. Jack's story also sheds light on the forces that transformed both the Churches of Christ and the American nation over the past sixty years. A remarkable book about a truly remarkable man!"

-Richard T. Hughes, author of Myths America Live By: White Supremacy and the Stories That Give Us Meaning, and coauthor of Reviving Ancient Faith: The Story of Churches of Christ in America 3rd edition.

"Dr. Scott is one of the most interesting men I have ever met. His boundless energy, his positive outlook on the world, and his expansive professional experience make For Everything There Is a Season a must-read."

-Royce Money, Ph.D., president emeritus, Abilene Christian University

"Jack Scott went from West Texas through Connecticut to a distinguished career as a college administrator and state legislature in California. It is a story of the faith of a young man formed in Churches of Christ who never forgot his roots but who embraced the ecumenism with which the movement began. It is also the very human story of a man who dearly loved his wife of more than sixty years and the family they created through great joys and serious tragedy. This is the story of America, faith, and family through one truly exceptional life."

- Gregory E, Sterling, Rev., Henry L. Slack Dean and Lillian Claus Professor of New Testament, Yale Divinity School
