Description

Living on the streets with untreated severe mental illness that developed at the age of fifty-three, Joseph was all but forgotten by the world. His daughter, Amanda, had searched for years and still hoped to find him--she'd even registered her father in the National Database of Missing Persons. Her sister, brother, and stepmother had all given up or moved on.

Ten years have passed when a call from the Missing Persons division alerts Amanda that her dad is alive, though his location is unknown. Is he back in Chicago or in one of the thirty countries he’d roamed as a self-proclaimed Prophet of God?

Amanda's mission is clear: find him. Her motivation: unconditional love. She navigates a maze of medical bureaucracy and a tangle of relationships to discover that what she's been searching for is not all that she finds.

Book club discussion questions included.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this book in exchange for an honest review.
I've read several books about families who have loved ones struggling with severe mental illnesses but also don't realize they are ill. Privacy laws and treatments that can't be forced on patients really makes things difficult for family members.
Joseph was so fortunate to have a family who cared about him and wanted what was best.
Amanda did an amazing job not giving up on finding their father and trying to get the help he needed. She was a great advocate for him.
I haven't read her first book but I definitely want to so I can see how life was before this book.

Finding Dad is a riveting and touching account of a real family’s struggle with Mental Illness. It allows the reader to step inside of this very difficult situation. Sometimes being close to someone in the midst of suffering from these conditions can feel like you are battling an invisible tornado all alone, one that’s intent on unraveling life as you know it, leaving you crushed. Amanda details this heartwrenching situation artfully and through the book comes along side the reader as if she is holding your hand and telling you that you are not the only one, and we can get through this together. So many valuable lessons here on navigating every system which works for and against you when you have a sick family member or friend. Great resource and an amazing conclusion to Losing Dad.
