Alchemist. Poisoner. Storm wielder.
Wren Embervale, alchemist-turned-assassin, finds solace in only one thing: seeking vengeance for the death of her friends from wars past. Offered a place at the ancient alchemy academy of Drevenor, she must claim her spot by conquering the Gauntlet – a gruelling series of deadly trials that could cost her sanity, or her life.
Yet the biggest threat of all might come from the man assigned to protect her – Torj Elderbrock, the silver-haired war hero who has hated her since she assassinated his last charge. This book was one of my most anticipated reads for 2025, and to have the opportunity to read it early in 2024 is beyond special.
The previous series, The Legends of Thezmarr, was highly enjoyable and through them I fell in love with both Wren and Torj. I've been so excited to see how their story would play out.
Let me tell you - Helen Scheuerer has the formula for an incredible romantasy perfected! The longing, the tension, the high stakes drama. It's all here and done so well. There is so much brewing under the surface of these characters, especially in the aftermath of the war which takes place five years prior to this book. I really felt the personal stories of the characters was interspersed well with the action throughout the book, and we also get a healthy dose of some fantastic side characters. Wren has already secured herself the spot as my favourite character from both series. So many elements of her journey and her reactions to things are incredibly relatable and I felt them to my core.
I loved the strong ending and I am genuinely so excited to see where the story goes!
Thank you so much to Pan Macmillan for the arc via NetGalley and for giving me the opportunity to share my honest thoughts on this book.
Thank you Pan Macmillan for sending me this ARC!
Iron and Embers is the first book in a new Romantic Fantasy series from Helen Scheuerer, a spin off series of her Legends of Thezmarr (but it can be read separately) and OMG Helen really outdid herself with this book, I loved Wren and Torj’s story and already can’t wait for book 2.
5 years after the war Wren is a Poisoner, secretly killing people who never answered for their war crimes and still struggling with grief about her dead friends and family and pushing everyone away. When she is sent on a mission to the Drevenor Academy to become an alchemist and find out more about a new dangerous substance threatening the royals, Torj is assigned as her bodyguard and their forced proximity makes their scorching attraction to each other come back to live, even when they hate each other after everything that happened in the past.
I loved the Legends of Thezmarr series and it was amazing to come back to this fascinating world and I really liked the academy setting. I was hooked from the first page, the plot is interesting and perfectly paced and all the slowly uncovered secrets and plot twists had me on the edge on my seat. I must admit I wasn’t the biggest fan of Wren in the previous series, but I absolutely loved her here. She was so strong, but in a completely different way than her sister, she was always so stubborn and determined to archive her goals. Torj was an amazing MMC, he was a grumpy warrior, but the way he always supported and put Wren first was beautiful, despite their complicated history they were truly perfect for each other and I was rooting for them to find a way to be together and give in to their feelings and I loved their slow burn and spicy romance, they both have gone through a lot and I just want for them to be happy and together. I also loved seeing all the familiar faces, I missed them and hope to see them again in book 2.
Iron and Embers is an amazing romantasy book and I recommend it to everyone who enjoys this genre. And after that cliffhanger, the next book can’t come soon enough!
*thank you to netgalley and the publisher for an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
Unputdownable!Iron & Embers is a stunning read that had me hooked from the very first page. The world-building is rich and immersive, pulling me into a world of magic, danger, and unforgettable characters. The plot is full of twists, and I loved how the tension built with every chapter. The characters are complex and their journeys are both emotional and empowering. If you enjoy a story with action, heart, and a bit of magic, Iron & Embers is definitely a must-read. I loved every moment of it!
Iron & Embers is a spellbinding start to The Ashes of Thezmarr series, blending dark magic, sizzling enemies-to-lovers tension, and high-stakes action. The chemistry between Wren and Torj is electric, driven by mutual disdain and undeniable attraction. Scheuerer crafts a world filled with intrigue, danger, and passion, with a heroine who is as fierce as she is vulnerable. If you’re into enemies-to-lovers, dark magic, and a world on the edge of war, Iron & Embers is your next must-read.
FIVE STARS.
This is my favourite book in the Thezmarr world. I absolutely devoured it in 2 days and I loved every second.
Having alchemy as the weapon of choice in this story made me feel represented as someone who is more academic than physical (in real world scenarios, never been in a battle).
The tension was absolutely insane and I would liken this book to ACOSF in the sense that Wren battles inner demons whilst denying herself the relationship she’s yearned for.
I loved seeing the Thezmarr characters grown up, especially Cal and Kipp.
You don’t need to have read her first series to appreciate the plot, as all relevant information is presented steadily in a way that enriches the story (no info dumping).
I DID NOT predict the ending and I have actually cried and been left reeling.
I loved it all.
I read this book as part of a BookBreak readalong, and all I can say is WOW! Fans of Fourth Wing will absolutely love this—it delivers those irresistible fantasy college vibes but with a fresh twist that feels completely unique.
The story centers on Wren, an alchemist—a concept I adored as a scientist. Her alchemy skills add a fascinating layer to the plot, but what truly hooked me was her complexity. Wren is not just grappling with the intricacies of alchemy and poison; she’s also haunted by the shadow of a past war and her status as the descendant of a royal line. This legacy puts her in constant danger, requiring protection from Torj, a fearless warrior with whom she shares a complicated history.
The close-proximity dynamic between Wren and Torj is executed to perfection. It’s charged with tension, vulnerability, and chemistry that will keep you turning the pages.
This book isn’t just a fantasy adventure—it’s an emotional ride packed with action, intrigue, and heart. If you’re looking for your next obsession, this is it. Add it to your 2025 TBR, and let’s reconvene in February to gush about it together!
In the meantime, I’ll be diving into The Legends of Thezmarr series to uncover more about this incredible world. Don’t miss out!
*ARC READ
“In the aftermath of the war, where the world was muted in ash..
𝑾𝒓𝒆𝒏 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒂 𝒃𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒄𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒖𝒓.”
I have no words for how much I loved this book and I am so thankful to have been approved for this arc read, as Iron & Embers is my most anticipated release of 2025.
From the very beginning of The Legends of Thezmarr series I was completely invested in the story unfolding for Torj and Wren, which this book gave me everything I wanted and more for the two of them.
I absolutely adore Wren Embervale. She is such a strong and resilient fmc, yet remains kind and compassionate despite all she has been through. Torj Elderbrook is just😮💨 I loved him before but getting his pov and seeing just how protective, loving and supportive he is for those around him that he cares for is so heartwarming (he’s officially in the top 3 book boyfriends).
The ending though!?😭 not quite sure I can handle waiting so long for book two when this is yet to be released!
Honestly though, already I cannot wait to read this book when it officially releases in February 2025 (UK) and I recommend everyone reads The Legends of Thezmarr before then so they can enjoy the truly wonderful world Helen Scheuerer has created with her writing.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
As a fan of The Legends of Thezmarr series, I was excited for this one.
The book starts 5 years after the last series but is now told from the perspectives of Wren and Torj. After the Shadow wars and losing so many people close to her, Wren has spent the years since off on her own, taking revenge in her own way.
A threat against a royal brings Wren and Torj back together as she makes her way to Drevenor, the prestigious school of alchemy. There, she joins other novices as they go through their learning, all leading up to gauntlet at the end to determine which novices can proceed to work their way up the ranks. The outside threat against royals also brings threats to Wren as the heir of Delmira, even whilst within the walls of Drevenor.
I loved this book and finally got more of Torj, who was a favourite of mine from the first series. Seeing him and Wren fight their feelings and each other whilst also working together to fight external threats hooked me! Even if the ending of the book broke my heart and has me needing the next book already!
Thanks to Pan Macmillan and Netgalley for the arc of this book for my honest review ❤️
This review has been added to goodreads and will be added to retailers on release.

I was a HUGE fan of The Legends of Thezmarr series but this….. Helen has outdone herself. This book is 𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐘𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆 and I’m absolutely FERAL for Torj Elderbrock.
I will be reading again with you all on the official release date.
oh my god. what an amazing story this was.
I have to begin by saying that I was not familiar with the original series, ‘The Legends of Thezmarr’, before reading this. I know it’s not required but I recommend for anyone wanting to pick up ‘Iron & Embers’ to at least consider reading the original series first. the beginning felt a bit like starting a book in the middle of the series and having no idea who the characters are or how they know each other.
that being said, once I got past this initial hurdle, I couldn’t put this down. the plot is so gripping and the characters so well fleshed-out that you have no choice but to be fully invested in the story.
I really appreciated the fact that Wren and Torj had a solid history, a foundation which was used to build their relationship on. also, the few spicy scenes are incredibly well written 🔥
regarding the setting, having the plot play out at an academy for alchemists was a really nice touch, one that’s not often encountered in fantasy books. I do wish the Gauntlet would have been a tad bit more complex.
I was initially thinking of giving this 4 stars but what makes the book shine is the immaculate slow burn. the tension was everything. it truly sets the book as one of the greats, in my opinion.
and that ending 😫 I’ll be waiting patiently for the next book.
Impeccable. Immaculate. Incredible. 🖤
This book was literally everything I wanted in a romantasy book and more.
Wren is our fierce FMC, who gives off major Nesta vibes in ACOSF. Angsty, full of trauma, and she just wants to be alone after all she went through in the Legends of Thezmarr series.
Torj, our moody, broody MMC gives major Cassian vibes. He’s the classic over protective and grumpy bodyguard who’s a cinnamon roll just for her. He’s also basically Thor.
A woman on the verge - Wren is battling through trauma from the war, after losing her sister and two of her close friends, and gains power she doesn’t understand and can’t accept. All she feels in her heart is a deep desire for justice and vengeance. She’ll do anything to get it, even if that means betraying Torj to do so.
✨Our side characters✨
Kipp and Cal
They provide amazing comic relief to the story, and I love their interactions as a group! They’re the brothers and friends you would want by your side, whilst being complete troublemakers.
Zavier and Odessa
They compliment Wren so well; Zavier challenges her, Odessa brings out a softer side in her she never thought she’d see again. The ultimate teammates.
Iron & Embers is a fast paced, gripping, heart pounding romantasy novel. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this!
It definitely helped that the world building was already done during Legends of Thezmarr series.
There was so much yearning and angst! Every chapter felt like it had a purpose. There were no filler chapters, or times where I wanted to skim or just skip ahead. I was thorough invested the whole time, and I haven’t felt that way about a book in so long. There was so many twists and turns I could’ve gotten whiplash 🤭🤍
The only thing that bothered me was what happened at the end 👀
It felt like it was just a plot device to set the scene for the next book, and didn’t make total sense with the lore. I didn’t feel like that was a necessary action, apart from the fact that it would create tension for book 2. But, I’ll ignore that bc I loved this book so much.
I’m soooo excited to see what happens in the next one! 🖤
I absolutely love the Legends of Thezmarr series so I when knew there would be another series set in the same world but following side characters Wren and Torj i just knew it would become a favourite and wow it didn't disappoint. Helen Scheuerer is such an amazing author in the way she portrays such an immersive and engaging world and characters you can't help but love.
Set five years after the events of the last book Wren is an assassin of sorts a 'poisoner' dealing out vengeance on the enemies from the shadow war and not having hardly any interaction with Torj for those five years. Yet when a new threat arises they find themselves back together when Wren finds herself attending the prestigious Drevenor Academy for Alchemists and Torji is assigned as her bodyguard.
I really enjoyed the academic setting and found the plot so engaging and interesting. The best bit though that I absolutely loved was the tension, angst, longing glances, gentle touches and the unbelievably beautiful slow burn between Wren and Torji..it completely delivered on everything and so much more the romance has always been simmering for so long between them and the way it was slowly built throughout the story was so well done for when the spice finally hits a lot later in the book it's an all consuming need between them and finally pays off in such a good way! This is very much a character driven story so while there isn't as much action until the last part it sets up the story beautifully for what's to come next.
To see the best side characters Kipp and Cal return in this series made me so happy they are two of my favourites and bring such lightness to the series. I couldn't put this book down but also didn't want it to end, such an amazing start to the new series..I can't wait for the next book and what's to come. Highly recommend!
While this is the first book in a new trilogy and can be read separately as it focuses on a new plot, and characters and gives enough information throughout so it doesn't feel like you are missing out on anything important, I do really recommend reading the Legends of Thezmarr series first to get the full reading experience as knowing these characters beforehand really added to my overall enjoyment of this new series.
Thank you so much to the publisher for the opportunity to read this before release.
I’ve not read The Legends of Thezmarr series but it seems I’m about to because I couldn’t get enough of Iron & Embers. Scheuerer’s world is so immersive, and the banter and verbal sparring between Wren and Torj is so addictive and creates such wonderful chemistry between them that I found myself devouring this book page by page. The slow burn sizzle, the hate you but I actually don’t, the one horse, shared living space, joined bathrooms (!!!) bodyguard/protector x I don’t need protection dynamic is TOO GOOD. I mean it when I say, no notes. I usually hate a second chance romance, but when it has this much yearning: swoon city - I couldn’t stop myself from smiling at each moment of sizzle and spice and then SCREAMING at that devastating cliff hanger.
4.5 ⭐️
Magic, deadly trials, and academic intrigue—Iron & Embers delivers it all. Set in the same universe as Helen Scheuerer’s Legends of Thezmarr series, this first book in the Ashes of Thezmarr series works perfectly as a standalone (though now I’m eager to dive into the earlier series).
The story opens five years after the Shadow War, introducing us to Wren, heir to the Delmirian throne. Wracked with grief, she takes vengeance into her own hands as "The Poisoner". However, she dreams of becoming a master alchemist by attending Drevenor Academy. To get there, she must survive The Gauntlet, a brutal set of trials—all while dodging a rising threat to magic-wielders. Assigned to protect her is Torj, a Warsword of Thezmarr with every reason to dislike her. Their history is fraught, and their dynamic crackles with tension and simmering chemistry.
Despite its length, the book flew by thanks to its shorter chapters and relentless momentum. Scheuerer balances intricate world-building with sharp character development, creating a story that hooked me from the start. The side characters were equally compelling, adding humour and heart—I’d happily read spin-offs about any of them. And that ending? I’m already counting down the days until book two.
Thanks to Pan Macmillan and NetGalley for the eARC—this is a gripping start to a new series!

Firstly! Thank you so so much @panmacmillan / @macmillanaus for this arc on NetGalley. It has truly started my year off wonderfully. I was also lucky enough to be on the cover reveal team for this book so I’m so excited to have received an arc!
Helen what are you doing to me!? This is my absolute favourite book in the Thezmarr world hands down.
After the first series, Wren has been struggling with grief after the war and not really having a purpose. She finally gets her letter of recommendation to attend Drevenor to achieve her dream of becoming a master alchemist. But since a royal was attacked, she is assigned Torj as a bodyguard to their ✨dismay✨. Queue the tension and loathing and annoyance that just buildsssss!
The characters that we all know and love had many appearances! But I was in an absolute chock hold with how much more in depth we got with Wren and Torj than anyone else. Helen has done such a fantastic job with showcasing all the different feelings Wren experiences and it felt like I was there holding her hand helping her through it. I also love that we didn’t have the typical ‘girl learns how to wield a sword with man’ montage because Wren is already deadly with her poisons and dare I say, just smarter.
The romance was a super super slow burn (as it should be), which helps the plot and world building establish properly and ugh it was done so well!
And the ending!? EXCUSE ME? I shall be sending you my psychologist bill within the next 5 business days.
What you should takeaway from this? Read The Legends of Thezmarr series and then IMMEDIATELY jump into this on 28 January. You’re welcome 💅🏻
Wow! This book felt like The Witcher at an adult Hogwarts that's run by Snape! I really loved how it dived straight into the story, without overpowering the reader with information and magic systems. The plot was fast and I was invested in the story from the beginning to the end.
The two main characters are strong and likeable. I was invested in their relationship and there was a great build up. They also have amazing chemistry!!
This book had chapters of spice that actually didn't lead anywhere. Yes, this book needed a bit of spice as the chemistry between the characters was on fire. But some chapters just felt forced. It was a push pull situation over and over. Some how in their heads, certain spice things weren't spice so that was okay & it meant they weren't emotionally attached.... If you like spice, you may love this book. I was skipping chapters of 'spice' and I'm glad I did as they never led anywhere.
It also contains one of my biggest book red flags. No communication or one character making decisions with no communication in order to fulfil their saviour complex.
The side characters are great and I can't wait to see if they are in the next book more after everything that happened. We didn't see much of them in this book as the focus was the chemistry between the main characters.
I loved the world building and how it focused on herbs and potions rather than magic. It felt unique. I was also glad there were others that were better at her at certain things. I've had enough of books where the main character is absolutely perfect and the best at everything! She had team mates that were her equal. She was good at some areas and they were good at others, this made them a great team.
I'm excited to see where book 2 will lead.
Absolutely incredible start to this new series!
I adored meeting Torj and Wren in the Knights of Thezmarr series and was so excited to see a new series with the focus on their growing relationship.
The shared trauma aspect of their relationship was handled beautifully. I loved how the trust rebuilt and how protective of each other they were despite initially deciding not to pursue anything.
Amazing plot. Wren is such a easy FMC to warm to and root for. I loved her more introverted methods of defending herself.
Will I be obsessed with this series?
Yes.
🔥 🔥 🔥🔥 🔥
Helen Scheuerer is the undisputed Queen of Romantasy! The Legends of Thezmarr is my Roman Empire, and this next chapter was EPIC! From start to finish this story had me in a chokehold. Helen writes so incredibly the story plays like a film in my head, world building so rich and refined but it does not drag. Wren is fierce and determined and it was incredible to learn more about her! This first chapter in The Ashes of Thezmarr has me wanting more! I cannot wait for the rest to come.
Thank you to Helen Scheuerer, NetGalley and Pan Macmillan for the opportunity to read this book.

This is the new Fourth Wing x Crowns of Nyaxia book.
It has a very slow burn, some good (and well deserved) spice. A very good world building that is just after a war and not like 1000years or right before. The characters are very realistic and have actual trauma that is realistic.
I like that not everyone has made it to the end and some characters death are very present in the book and are a big strength for others.
MMC gave some the Witcher vibes but I am here for it.
Kinda hoped the FMC wore something else and didn’t have a « messy bun » all the time. I kinda like the ones that are girly pops and not « she was naturally breaktaking I would go to war for her bare face look » kinda is too fanficish and also can be a bit harsh on some people

Overall it’s a nice read I’d love to read the next books in the series.
Absolutely devoured this book, as I knew I would. I loved the Legends of Thezmarr series and it’s become a favourite, so I was very excited to read Wren and Torj’s story. Though this is book 1 in an entirely new trilogy with a whole new plot and character focus, i do recommend reading the Legends series first to optimise your experience. This can be read separately, however for me the fact that I already knew the side characters, who feature right from the beginning of Iron & Embers, heightened my enjoyment.
This story delivered for me on the plot, I was so interested in the alchemy academy setting which is not what you expect. I also loved the tension, tease and slow burn between Wren and Torj, but also seeing the softer side of Torj too and the internal battles he’s fighting. Another love for me was the fact we still get our Kipp and Cal fix - excellent side characters. This book had me smiling, chuckling, biting my lip, tense and I just ate it up. If I had to say anything negative it’s that the use of the word “bodily” was a bit too often, as was the frequent references to Torj’s sea-blue eyes. But that’s me being picky because you gotta say at least one thing you didn’t like 😅
Overall I gave this book a 5⭐️, and this was an easy rating. It gave me all the vibes I hoped and I couldn’t put it down - can’t wait for the next book!
Amazing! I am a huge fan of The Legends of Thezmarr series. This is a sequel with the MMC’s switching. I love Wren and Torj. I already loved them but now all I can say is wow. This book was everything I wanted it to be. I would definitely recommend this to everyone!

Wow. I didn’t think Thea and Wilder could be beat but Wren and Torj take the crown 👑 when people say they want yearning in a book THIS is what they are talking about!! The banter. The tension. All of the comedic relief littered throughout with our loveable side characters that had me literally giggling out loud. Take a bow Helen 👏🏻 👏🏻
The Legends of Thezmarr has been one of my great fantasy discoveries these past year. And so, when I saw that a new series, written about Wren and Torj, I was so thrilled to receive this ARC.
Wren is serious, but can be fierce, she's loyal and smart, but the war has left her shallow. How can she be happy when her friends, her sister, has died ? During the 5 years since the war, she has sought vengeance... Some call her the Poisoner...
Some grave events towards the royals allow her to finaly go study at Drevenor academy, the famous school for alchemists. Being a royal herself, she is assigned a bodyguard, But to her disappointment, it's Torj, the Bear Slayer... And he can see through all her pretendings and fake smiles, and slowly but surely, he manages to win her heart, because they seem to be connected...
Slow burn, forced proximity, enemies to lovers, magical school, all is there for a perfect book. And now, I want to know how the story goes !
Y‘all the way I devoured this book😍 ABSOLUTELY loved every minute of it!
This is the first book in The Ashes of Thezmarr trilogy and features the story of Wren and Torj.
This new trilogy is intended to stand on its own and there are little recaps and flashbacks sprinkled within the book, so you can definitely get away with reading just this book. But to get the whole experience, I would recommend reading The Legends of Thezmarr series first, it’s an amazing series!
In this one we follow the story of Wren, an alchemist turned Poisoner who is out for vengance after the events of the war and Torj the silver-haired Warsword also know as the Bear Slayer.
They have amazing banter and I would definitely consider this a sloooow burn, but the reward was so so worth it 🫠
There were honestly so many amazing scenes and I had a really hard time picking my favorite quotes. We get the bodyguard trope with a super protective MMC, a „f*ck it“ scene that makes your toes curl, a morally grey FMC and twists and turns with an ending that leaves you staring at the wall for a little bit.
And don’t even get me started on all the beloved characters that we already know from the previous books 😍 Like I’ve said, I loved every minute of it and can’t wait to see how the story continues 🖤
I received an eARC in exchange for an honest review, thank you so much!

Elwren Embervale has many identities, Princess, War Hero, Storm-Wielder, Poisoner, Assassin. However when she is offered a place at the prestigious academy of Drevenor, she is a step closer to her childhood dream of becoming a Master Alchemist. It comes at a cost however as she discovers the infamous Warsword, Bear Slayer, (and her nemesis) Torj has been assigned as her bodyguard. As she tackles a series of deadly challenges, dark and sinister events at the Academy start to unfold. But as an inexplicable force brings Wren and Torj closer, it’s clear it’s not just Wren’s life on the line but her heart and very soul…
Firstly, this is such a great Romantasy, I really enjoyed it! But I straight up made an error here in not reading Blood and Steel first. It’s a standalone series, sure, and it’s not that the book doesn’t make sense having not read the previous books as it recaps well, but it clearly beneficial to have read the other books first and this would probably have enriched my reading experience. This book is annoyingly good, so be aware if you pick it up you’re likely unknowingly committing to back tracking and reading a whole four part series as well!
The start is quite busy, covering off past context flicking between, past/ present to fill in the gaps for the lemons like me who didn’t read the books in chronological order. But you’re quickly sucked into the rich plot and Scheuerer swiftly builds a magical world with an intriguing array of characters.
The book alternates between Torj and Wren’s POV. The chapters are short so you’re flitting from one to the other but I really enjoyed this fast pacing, it means the plot unfolds and the tension builds very quickly. It’s not wholly clear and convincing why Wren and Torj are actually enemies to start with, but the transition to lovers was hot so honestly who cares! I love how their relationship develops over the course of the book and can’t wait to see where book two of the series takes it.
Aside from the romance there’s plenty of adventure, mystery and intrigue. I’m always all in for any book with dark academia! The plot has heaps of potion making and student politics with deadly trials thrown in.
Iron & Embers is such a great read, if you’re looking for a good solid Romantasy it really ticks all the boxes! I’m already looking forward to book two, but until then I’ll be swiftly picking up The Legends of Thezmarr to catch up…
Helen Scheuerer has a real gift for creating incredible romantasy. She is one of my favourite authors and I promise you that you wont be disappointed. But there is a warning, once you start you will not be able to put this book down. So be prepared to put aside anything else until you’ve finished it.
To say I am unwell over this book is an understatement. I love Helen Scheuerer’s writing and this by far has been her best yet and I didn’t think anything could EVER beat the legends of Thezmarr. I loved this book whole heartedly.
I went into this eARC missing the characters from the previous series and wondered how Helen would tie them into the next and she did not disappoint. I loved everything from the beginning and not giving anything away if you have not read her first series please do. I hate seeing readers read this without no context to her writing or what came before.
I LOVED this whole book. Wren and Tori may have surpassed as my favorite couple. I loved the whole bodyguard trope that came with this but I also just love Wren as a character. I feel that this book had such a unique plot and Helen carried this out so well.
I thoroughly am counting down the days to book 2.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and PanMacMillan for this early eARC for this wonderful book. I can’t wait to help Helen reach her targeted audience and get just how well done this book is out there. She is a wonderful author and I am so thankful that a publisher took notice to her.
What an incredible book!
I know I might be biased, since I absolutely ADORE Helen Scheuerer's work, and the Legends of Thezmarr is in my top 10 reads of the year.
So i was waiting for this book to come out, and it did not disappoint!
This book is set 5 years after the Legends of Thezmarr's last book, so I really recommend to read those incredible four books before embarking on this journey.
Wren is an Alchemist, but also has a secret identity as the Poisoner, seeking revenge after some very traumatic events that take place in the Legends of Thezmarr. She gets accepted to a very prestigious alchemy school, but being a very important person in her realm, she gets assigned a bodyguard, and who else then Troj Elderbrook, our own very silver-haired warsword. I love the absolute tension that's between Wren and Troj, the fact that they never acted on their feelings and they "hate" each other is ADORABLE, and the one shared bathing chamber might be my new favourite trope.
The spice was absolutely DELICIOUS, the story, flashbacks and foreshadowing were amazing, and the ending left me destroyed.
Also, Cal and Kipp are back!!! I love them! :D
I need the Second book, right now!
~ this is my new favourite fantasy book!! ♡ ~
“iron & embers” is a captivating fantasy novel set in a world that is suffering with the aftermath of the shadow war. the story revolves around two rivalling characters, a future queen & her bodyguard.
wren embervale; deadly assassin. poisoner. alchemist. future queen of delmeria.
what an incredible protagonist. she is the embodiment of rage. her extensive knowledge in poisons & cures lands her in the ancient academy of drevenor & is tasked to find a cure to the dark magic that threatens the kingdoms.
torj elderbrock; the silver-haired bear slayer. a saviour of the midrealms. warsword. bodyguard.
torj was an absolute dream of a mystery to read about. him & his charming words will plague my brain for the rest of my days. he is mysterious, dangerous & flirty all in one.
this book was so brilliantly captivating & the imagery was incredible. the fantasy element was so, so well written and beautifully executed. there is such an ethereal quality to helen’s writing.
the romance was sizzling and filled with tension & pining. the slow burn was almost tortuous! the banter!! they bounce off each other SO well! i loved this book so much!
book 1 isn’t even officially released yet and i’m already prepared to beg for book 2! became you see that ending? yeah i need 3-5 business days to recover😩‼️
a huge thank you to panmacmillan & bookbreakuk for sending me a gorgeous proof copy of “iron & embers” which is set to release on 06/02/2025 ❤️
I adored being back in this world!
I would 100% recommend reading the Legends of Thezmarr before this because you will miss so much if you don’t!
I loved Wren (our FMC) working through her past. The academic setting with the alchemy was brilliant. Our MMC was grumpy/sunshine. This book is about Wren and her time at an alchemy university, where she finds hidden secrets, our MMC is sent to guard her as there is a threat to the royals and the story unravels from there.
Loved it!
Helen has done it again 🙌🏻 This was one of my most anticipated releases of 2025 and it did not disappoint in the slightest!!
I highly recommend starting with Legends of Thezmarr before starting this series, as you will get some major spoilers to the overarching storyline during Iron and Embers, and honestly once you finish this book you're going to want to go back and read Helen's whole back catalogue.
If you love epic fantasy with female characters at the forefront of the story, you will adore Helen's writing. This book is slightly heavier on the romance aspect, but in a way that adds to the story, and creates a second shocking plot of its own.
I devoured this book, and I cannot stop thinking about it almost a month later. The story and these characters have me in a chokehold and I need to know what happens next for Torj and Wren! If I wasn't already so far gone over Wilder Hawthorne, Torj would absolutely have a shot at top book boyfriend!
There were moments I just wanted to shake these characters and bang their heads together, which shows just how invested I was in their story! I laughed, I cried, I threw my kindle, I screamed into the void. This book is easily one of my top reads this year and we're only a week in!

Iron & Embers is the first instalment in The Ashes of Thezmarr trilogy by author Helen Scheuerer. Whilst this series is advertised for its ability to be read separately from The Legends of Thezmarr series, I personally recommend reading that series prior to this one for better emotional impact and understanding. This book recounts the need-to-know events from that series for better understanding, however I personally think you'll achieve a much fuller reading experience with a better understanding for all of the characters by having direct knowledge on their origins which leads to the events throughout this book. I don't know what kind of sorcery Scheuerer puts into her writing because I need somebody to explain to me how I have devoured the entirety of the Legends series and its companion standalone alongside this book in less than a week. I'm a woman addicted and I'm already clawing at the walls for the release of the sequel which is mere months away and yet feels infinitely longer after that jaw-dropping ending. New favourite auto-buy author? Absolutely yes. I was immediately immersed into the expansive setting and ongoing world-building that takes place within this universe as we explore corners of the world we've not yet seen. I've always been a huge fan of an academic setting and I had a lot of fun exploring the cut-throat environment that is established within the walls of Drevenor Academy. The story felt well-paced as it seamlessly balanced the explosive forbidden chemistry between our two main characters and the ongoing threat that develops throughout the duration of the plot. The addictive character interactions and emotional vulnerabilities that are explored offer an intimate insight into our cast of characters that left me unable to put the book down and vying for more. I adored seeing the return of fan favourite characters within a found family unit whilst leaving ample space for the introduction for new characters to be welcomed and explored. I truly could not recommend this author any further as her seemingly effortless writing will leave you enthralled and desperate for more and I'm so unbelievably excited for the release of the sequel, Thorns & Fire, which is due sometime July 2025.
𝐏𝐥𝐨𝐭:
The plot in Iron & Embers takes place five years after the events of The Legends of Thezmarr series as we follow Wren on her academic journey towards securing her dream as a Master Alchemist whilst battling with the rage and grief she has experienced post-war. When a King of the Midrealms is attacked by an unknown group who have used a never before-seen form of alchemy in their attack, Wren is tasked with uncovering a cure for the dark magic that once again plagues the kingdom by attending the ancient alchemy academy of Drevenor. Per the laws of the Midrealms; an attack on a Royal is an attack on them all and therefore, Wren is assigned a bodyguard to protect her during her stay at Drevenor. It's unfortunate that her assigned bodyguard is none other than Torj Elderbrook, a legendary Warsword and the very man she has spent the past five years trying to forget. I absolutely loved how the plot in this book developed over time whilst acting as a support for the character dynamics and development. Wren's task for developing a cure whilst putting everything she has towards passing the Gauntlet helped to showcase her ambition and drive which was vital for the ongoing plot. As somebody who has loved the previous connecting series it was a lot of fun to see how the past and the present connect whilst also standing apart on its own. Getting to see the focus on Alchemy was an interesting exploration as it shows that there is as much value in the power of the mind and intelligence, arguably if not more, as there is to physical strength and prowess. Wren's strength has always been her mind and keenness towards her pursuit for knowledge and I loved getting to see her grow in support of the ongoing plot. The suspense and intrigue was addictive as we investigate the building dissent across the kingdoms which is lead by a secret nefarious group who's ambitions very much still lay in the unknowns. I'm very excited to explore this group further and the alluded personal connection that definitely has me trusting a certain character significantly less than what I initially felt.
𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬:
Elwren 'The Poisoner' Embervale is a morally complex woman who we see undergo a great deal of change and development throughout her journey in Iron & Embers. The shadow war has left its scars externally and internally upon Wren and it truly broke my heart to see the largely self-imposed suffering that she has endured since. The survivor's guilt is strong within Wren's character and her self-loathing that she carries as a result was heart-wrenching as we follow her on her path for vengeance with a determination to rid the world of those who contributed to the wrong side of the war. Revenge becomes her sole-focus after continually being rejected from the academy that holds her dreams within its grasp, and it was interesting to follow a woman largely trained in healing and using alchemy for good suddenly use her talent for morally complex desires. The significant loss that she faced during the war results in Wren emotionally closing herself off and refusing to let people in out of fear of having to face that loss again. Her journey is not linear and I really connected with Wren throughout her struggles and determination to finally achieve her goals after being granted the opportunity to study Drevenor and once again help rid the world of dark magic. I loved following a main character who's main strengths lay within her mind as opposed to physical strength and there's no denying that Wren is not a character you want to find yourself on opposite sides of. She's a fierce and headstrong woman who is willing to do whatever it takes for the side of good no matter the personal cost. Wren's journey towards healing was a desperately slow-burn and it was a beautiful transition to see her finally come to terms with all that she has lost and endured. Seeing her slowly begin to emotionally lower her walls and once again let people in was such a rewarding sight to see and I cannot wait to see Wren continue to grow and learn in the next book alongside her peers. Her refusal to accept less than she deserves was everything I had hoped to see from a consistently strong character, and I have nothing but respect and belief in Wren in her pursuit for the truth. Elwren is a far from perfect character who makes a lot of mistakes and choices which we see her ultimately become forced to face the consequences of those actions. I could not love her more for it as her complexities only seek to add to her humanity and I just know that she is on the path towards growing into a woman that she can feel proud of becoming.
Torj 'The Bear Slayer' Elderbrock is the standard for all love interests and I will die on this hill defending my stance. You're telling me that this man has been pining for this woman for over five YEARS amidst all of the pain, trauma and circumstances that kept them apart? You're telling me that when given the opportunity to spend one night with her... he refuses knowing that one night will never be enough and he painfully walks away with the silent hope that she'll someday be ready to offer him everything? I didn't think it was possible to swoon whilst simultaneously wanting to cry and yet... here I am. Torj was one of my favourite side characters throughout the Legends series and I was thrilled to see him become a central focus in his own journey. His familial backstory took me by complete surprise and whilst my heart broke for his experiences, I was really grateful to be offered a deeper emotional insight into his character. Learning his backstory helped me better connect with Torj's character whilst having a better understanding for his actions and motivations. Torj is a protector at heart and it was hilarious to see his struggles trying to protect a headstrong woman who was adamant that she didn't need his help. His loyalty to the people he cares about was admirable and I adore how Torj is a man that can be depended and relied upon. What surprised me the most was the inner tenderness and softness that a man like Torj possessed despite being known for his fierce and aggressive nature on the battlefield, and yet at the same time I really shouldn't feel surprised. The way Torj is able to build up the people around them and encourage the best from them was everything I hoped he would be. His steadfast willingness to stand up for what is right and determination to protect innocent lives made him an easy character to fall in-love with and I'm very keen to see where his journey will lead in the next book. Torj's selflessness emotionally gutted me because all I wanted was for this beautiful soul finally achieve his every want and hope that he's carried throughout his life... but in Helen Scheuerer we trust because I refuse to accept any other alternative for his character. Honestly, I just wanted to give this man the biggest hug and reassure him that everything will (hopefully) work out for him in the end. I don't think I've ever emotionally rooted for a character as fiercely as I have Torj Elderbrook, and I cannot wait to see what more pain and torment this man endures as he fights for the life that he wants and deserves.
𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭:
Iron & Embers is the epitome of an angsty forbidden romance filled with delicious longing and yearning which will leave you on the edge of your seat and vying for more. I swear I was tempted to bite my knuckles from the second-hand anxiety that I was feeling on behalf of these two characters. There's no doubting that Wren and Torj are bound by unknown forces despite their determination to hate one another as a result of past circumstances. I probably shouldn't have found it as funny as I did... but it was genuinely hilarious how at odds both characters were and the banter that manifested as a result. Their continuous attraction and sizzling chemistry left me swooning and desperate to see where their tumultuous dynamic was building towards despite how desperately both characters fought against their natural chemistry. There's a lot of pre-existing hurt and history between Wren and Torj and I was thrilled to see the deeper insight that was offered during past recounts and discussions. At their core, Torj and Wren are two deeply hurt individuals who were forever altered by the shadow war and ultimately don't know how to cope with and address those changes. Seeing their relationship develop and evolve through patience, understanding and vulnerable communication was a beautiful progression to follow and I loved every moment of it. Seeing them begin to lean upon one another during moments of strife was everything I had hoped to see and I loved how their peers were able to predict their growth before they ever could. There's still so much hurt that exists between both characters with a lot left unsaid so I'm very excited to see what comes next for Torj and Wren after that explosive ending. The insight into what their relationship can become over time was addictive and I'm truly rooting for them to heal independently and as a couple. There's no denying the strength that Wren and Torj possess as a couple and I cannot wait to see them grow into potentially the most powerful couple within the Thezmarr universe.
𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬:
Iron & Embers has left me shell-shocked with an eagerness for the next book after this book offered the perfect balance between providing answers whilst leaving enough things left unsaid. There's so much unknown about the fate of the characters and the world that they reside in and I cannot wait to see the truth begin to be discovered. There's one character in particular that I'm feeling untrustworthy towards so I'm keen to see if my feelings are right or if I'll be pleasantly surprised by the outcome. The world of Thezmarr has continued to grow in strength and I cannot wait to delve further into the author's mind with the release of the sequel, Thorns & Fire, which is due sometime July 2025.

“𝕐𝕠𝕦 𝕝𝕠𝕠𝕜 𝕘𝕠𝕠𝕕 𝕚𝕟 𝕝𝕚𝕘𝕙𝕥𝕟𝕚𝕟𝕘”
This is nothing short of a masterpiece. Picture this: slow burn enemies to lovers tension so thick you can feel it, high stakes trials that kept me on edge, and banter sharp enough to cut glass.
Let’s talk about Wren Embervale—our lethal QUEEN. She’s an alchemist-turned-assassin with a dark, vengeance filled journey that earned her the name The Poisoner. Now, she’s battling her way through the deadly Gauntlet at Drevenor Academy (think The Hunger Games but with alchemy), all while dealing with Torj Elderbrock—the emotionally guarded, silver haired war hero she hasn’t seen in years but is now her assigned bodyguard. Their chemistry? Explosive. Their tension? Unmatched. And when that slow burn finally ignites? Perfection.

‘𝒴𝑜𝓊 𝓁𝑜𝑜𝓀 𝓁𝒾𝓀𝑒 𝓎𝑜𝓊’𝒹 𝑒𝓃𝒿𝑜𝓎 𝒾𝓉.”
Tropes and themes I loved:
🧪Alchemist and Warsword Bodyguard
🧪SLOW burn full of angst
🧪Nightmare comfort
🧪One Horse
🧪He trains her
🧪Forced Proximity
🧪Fu€k it moment
🧪Despise to love
🧪Brutal ending
Set five years after The Legends of Thezmarr, this story reunites Wren and Torj in an academic setting filled with intrigue and danger. The plot is engaging, but the real magic lies in the characters and their relationships. The romance between Wren and Torj is beautifully drawn out, with every glance, touch, and moment of angst building to a breathtaking payoff.
“ɪ’ᴠᴇ ɢᴏᴛ ʏᴏᴜ, ᴇᴍʙᴇʀꜱ.”
Seeing familiar faces like Kipp and Cal brought so much warmth and humor to balance the intensity of the story. I loved seeing Thea and Wilder again too, and the little pep talk Wilder gave Torj made my heart grow three sizes.
Whether you’re new to this world or already a fan, this book delivers. While you can jump in here, I’d STRONGLY recommend starting with The Legends of Thezmarr series for the full emotional impact. Helen Scheuerer has outdone herself again, this ending is literally giving me a book hangover and I am physically unwell with that ending- I need book two like I need air💨
I could not have ended my 2024 reading season on a higher note. Iron and Embers by @helenscheuerer is a contender for one of my top favorite books of all time and do you want to hear the kicker?!
I HAVEN'T EVEN READ THE PRE-SERIES. (Immediately moved to the top of my tbr, I like doing things backwards I guess?)
This book was everything my little vindictive, witchy heart wanted. It's like... If a magical school was just Snapes potions class, but add in vikings and a dash of smut.
Wren is angry, she is mad and vindictive against those responsible for the death of her loved ones. She will kill them all, even if it holds her back from her dream, they will pay. All she has ever wanted was to be a master alchemist, graduating from the prestigious alchemy school, but her anger holds her back and prohibits her from stepping foot on the school grounds. When disaster strikes and royals start being targeted, including Wren, the school knows they need Wren's insight and finally allows her to enter their grounds. If she is to become a master alchemist, she must face all matters of danger, physical, emotional, mental, the biggest one being love. When an old flame is assigned as her body guard at the school, their hatred for each other festers at the surface but something bigger is going on within their souls.
I cannot tell you how much I adored this book. It felt like coming home. I found myself giggling, kicking my feet, yelling at the characters (see previous video) and crying at the end. It is a CARDINAL SIN that the second book isn't in my hands immediately.
✨"Iron & Embers" by Helen Scheuerer✨ is a chef’s kiss 🔥 masterpiece. I’m talking slow-burn enemies-to-lovers tension so thick you’ll need a knife to cut through it, deadly trials that had my heart pounding, and banter so sharp it left scars. Let me break it down for you 👇:
---
Wren Embervale? QUEEN BEHAVIOUR 👑
Our girl Wren is an alchemist-turned-assassin with a past drenched in blood and vengeance. She's called The Poisoner for a reason, y’all. 😤💉 She’s out here trying to survive the Gauntlet at Drevenor Academy—think The Hunger Games meets Alchemy 101—all while wrestling with her stormy history with Torj Elderbrock, the silver-haired, emotionally constipated, walking war legend 🐺.
Wren’s vibe: Stubborn, fierce, full of fire.
Her motto: "I didn't fight in the fucking shadow war so a man could tell me where my place is." 👏
And honestly? Same, girl. Same. 🙌
---
Torj Elderbrock? UGH, I’m OBSESSED 🫠
This man. THIS MAN. He’s broody, loyal, and hiding secrets so deep, even he’s drowning in them. His protective streak? Chef’s kiss. 😩 His history with Wren? Messy AF in the best way. The tension between them could fuel a thousand thunderstorms. 🌩️⚡️
Torj’s vibe: “Go up in flames with me, Embers.”🔥
Also Torj: “Do you mean to kill me, Embers? Because if you’re to be the end of me, it’s an end I’ll greet with open arms.” 🥵
Me, melting: Sir, stop. 😭💔
---
The SQUAD? ICONIC ✨
The side characters? 10/10, no notes. Kipp Snowden = the moment. 🦊 He’s got sass for days and lines that had me cackling:
"Not if I can help it, Flaming Arrow. Life is short, and you’ve gotta die from something." 💀🔥
Zavier and Dessa were ride-or-die teammates who grew on me like poison ivy (in the best way). 🌱💔
---
The World-Building? IMMERSIVE 🗺️
Dark magic, ancient alchemy, and a war-torn world filled with assassins and warriors? Scheuerer didn’t just write a book; she built a freaking realm. The Gauntlet was deadly and cinematic, and I felt every blade, every storm, every heartbreak. ⚔️🌪️
---
THE ROMANCE? SLOW-BURN PERFECTION 🥵🔥
Listen, the enemies-to-lovers trope is already my kryptonite, but this? This was a whole new level. Wren and Torj’s chemistry isn’t just sizzling—it’s a full-on wildfire. From their bickering to their stolen moments of vulnerability, I was 👏 fully 👏 invested 👏. Their shared scars and whispered promises? Ugh, my heart. 💔🔥
Favourite moments:
- "You look good in lightning." ⚡
- "In the aftermath of the war, where the world was muted in ash, Wren was a burst of colour."🎨
- "For theirs was a story told in scars." 🥀
---
THE ENDING? RUDE 😭
When I tell you the last few chapters wrecked me—I mean, I’m still picking up the pieces of my soul. Wren’s journey was all about survival, but that ending? It was pure devastation and hope rolled into one. Book two cannot come fast enough. Helen, please. I’m begging. 🛐
