Description
One week after the events of A Christmas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge is celebrating New Year's Eve at his nephew Fred's house, ready to embark on his new life as a gregarious, generous family man with a more charitable business model. However, it soon becomes clear that his transition will be more difficult than predicted on Christmas Day. At the New Year's Eve party, Scrooge meets a doctor who requests to interview him about his experience with the spirits, an interview that leads to others in positions of power doubting Scrooge's mental faculties. And when Scrooge returns home from the party, a threatening note awaits him from men whose lives he ruined in the past and who will not let him be forgiven so easily. Can Scrooge learn to rejoin society? And will the forces converging around him allow him to succeed?

Beth Ford has written a second part to Dickens's classic, A Christmas Carol, with After the Spirits Come. The new story picks up after Ebenezer Scrooge has been enlightened by visits from the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future to change his selfish ways. There are many of the old, familiar characters in this novel. For instance, Bob Cratchit and his family are prevalent, as are Scrooge's nephew Fred, and his wife, Clara. Of course, Ebenezer Scrooge is still the main character. However, there are also many new characters in Ford's tale, both likable and unlikable. Has Scrooge kept his New Year's resolutions of continued generosity and a humbler nature? If so, how long will his change of heart last? There are bets placed on this subject.
Being a fan of the legendary story, A Christmas Carol, I was excited to read After the Spirits Come by Beth Ford. And I was not disappointed! For one thing, her writing style is like that of Dickens'. When reading this book, I may have thought that he put a quill pen to paper to continue the story of Ebenezer's life. Besides the similar writing style, I appreciate that Ford's character introduction and development are multidimensional. Miss Spencer, who Scrooge is smitten by, has depth in her personality and precise mannerisms. But what I found most impressive is how the author slowly reveals several storylines, all at a measured pace. Under the dimly lit streetlamps of London, Ford has laid a winding cobblestone path with After the Spirits Come. Grab a lantern to light the way. I dare you to join the journey this holiday, or any time you are searching for kind spirits.
