Description

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER

'One of the most loving and tender accounts of motherhood I've ever read' – Sarah Turner

'Heartwarming and honest with magnificent humour sprinkled throughout' – Clara Batten

'Lisa writes with an honesty that is both refreshing and important' – Kellie Bright, actor and SEN Parent

The highs, the lows and the delightfully neurospicy – this book is for every parent raising the ‘in-between’ children in a neurotypical world.

How many times have you heard ‘he doesn’t look autistic’ or ‘she seems fine to me’? Do you sometimes feel alone as a parent, like no one really gets it? And have you ever watched in horror as your child told a friend their house was ‘boring and smelly’?!

If any of that sounds familiar, it’s time to throw out the perfect parenting guides and join Lisa Lloyd on this rollercoaster journey of raising neurodivergent children who don’t fit the mainstream but aren’t considered ‘severe’ either. Lisa has been there and is ready to tell all – from the confusion of the early years and discovering your child is neurodivergent, to navigating a school system that doesn’t seem to fit, and the daily frustrations of picking your battles (and losing most of them).

Ever wondered what would happen if you took your autistic three-year-old on a haunted ghost ride? Or what your reaction would be if your seven-year-old grabbed a stranger’s backfat in the changing rooms? Wonder no more! Raising the SEN-Betweeners is a very honest guide for all those parents in similar shoes, navigating the challenges, joys and hilariously unpredictable moments every day. If that is you, this book will make one thing very clear: you are not alone.

Such an interesting read. As a mum to a SEN child who is trying to get a diagnosis this book hit just the right notes for me and I will be recommending it to my friends. Thank you for the copy!

This book was really interesting, and definitely one that needed to be written!
I know it will speak to so many people! The SEN 'gap' is a topic that doesn't get spoken of enough, but as a teacher, and knowing so many mates with children with SEND needs I think this book will be a complete god-send! It will give peace of mind, and will make readers feeling like they are not on their own!

I wish this book had more factual and scientific elements, or interviews with SENDco's/teachers too. I enjoyed hearing from Lisa Lloyd's perspective as a case study - but would have liked to hear from others too.

This book from the co-founder of SEND Reform England provides an honest account of what it is like to parent two very different autistic children. Lisa charts her journey of raising neurodivergent children who don’t fit the mainstream but aren’t considered ‘severe’ either. Alongside stories from her life, she provides some top tips for parents who may be facing similar situations.

This book felt like sitting down with a friend and a bottle of wine. Told in the first person point of view, it is a very relatable account for anyone who has parented neurodivergent children. Although she does offer a few tips, I didn't come out with any revolutionary ideas but rather a sense that I wasn't alone on this journey.

A recommended read for parents parenting neurodivergent kids who aren't "struggling enough" to get the recognition and support they need.

Thank you to Netgalley and Ebury Publishing for providing me with a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A very relatable read. Lisa just gets it all - the highs, the lows, the love, the guilt, the understanding. This is a great insight into raising children with SEN.

The book was broken down into chapters on different areas with top tips at the end of every section. It was lovely to see how much the author obviously loves and respects her children and their needs.

I hadn’t heard of Lisa, or her social media accounts prior to this, but I’m now following her.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an e-archive copy of this book.

I absolutely, admittedly, admiringly loved this one!
This is how I would like my parenting, and SEN parenting/memoirish books to be.
Lloyd’s humour and rawness perfectly resonated with me.
Her two differently different children sound awesome.
She speaks from experience, admits to the ups and downs, boredom, tiredness, tells it as it is because it is what it is.
This book covers topics such as guilt, eating, specific tips, and love for SEN inbetweeners.
I can easily place this book in my top 5 books to go to, go back to about SEN and parenting. It is engaging, understanding like a good friend, honest, universal in many ways, modest and up-to-date.

As a mother to SEN children, this book is such a breath of fresh air! Written by Lisa, who I follow on Tiktok and is absolutely hilarious, we as parents get to feel heard when it comes to the highs and lows of parenting SEN children.

Such an important book for not just SEN parents, but anyone involved in the support and care of SEN children.

I follow this lady on social media and I find her inspirational, funny and engaging. I thought the book was well written and a great mix of informational and personal experience. You can really see how much she is trying to support other mothers like herself. I have already recommended this book and I was chuffed to have received an arc!
