Description

Willow needed love, friendship and a place to belong. She just didn’t know where to look.

Injured, lost and alone in unfamiliar woods, Willow has been abruptly launched on an odyssey that changes her life forever. In the story-telling tradition of Charlotte’s Web, Watership Down and Animal Farm, this coming-of-age tale takes Willow, a spoiled and self-centred young calf, on a perilous journey in search of a new home.

In the aftermath of a frenzied cattle stampede on the Caufield farm, Willow wakes from a fevered delirium to find herself in a remote and hostile part of the neighbouring woodlands. Falsely accused of causing a disastrous flood, she has been shunned by her herd, and believes she has even lost the love of her best friend, Jenny Caufield.

Unwilling to return home and face Jenny or anyone else on the farm, the naive, stubborn Willow embarks on a quest to find the rainbow meadows, a wonderful place where she imagines she will be loved, admired and adored. But the rainbow meadows is only a fantasy. It can’t replace the home she will leave behind.

In her quest, Willow risks much more than the loss of her home on the Caufield farm. She must overcome treachery, injury, and the cruelty of harsh lands, vicious animals and nasty people. Willow must grow up quickly if she is to survive.

Willow needed love, friendship and a place to belong. She just didn’t know where to look.

"One of the interesting things about this first page which is really, really nice – I swear this writer is a poet – there is a lyrical quality that engages emotion...This piece does a good job of orienting the reader. It’s a very nice writing style with assonance, consonance, and lastly alliteration… Very poetic, very lyrical – you can feel it."  Excerpt from Readerly Podcast #37: "First Page Feedback for Writers (writing analysis)": https://creators.spotify.com/pod/show/readerlybooks

"While this book is set in the mid-western United States in the 1950s, I believe the story’s themes are universal across generations and cultures… People everywhere understand the need for love, friendship and family, and, at the same time, most of us want some sense of independence and the opportunity to grow as individuals. Willow had to learn how to balance these needs."
