Description
It’s 2035 and artificial intelligence has upended the world. Now, it just might end it.
Fifteen years into the AI age, the technology has transformed every aspect of the human experience.
At the airline where he works, it is a threat to Nekko, a master mechanic struggling to keep his job and cope with a tragic loss that nearly ripped his family apart.
For Shep, a fierce twenty-something combat vet whose increasingly shaky judgment is leading her deeper into personal and professional danger, it is a risky crutch that might fail her—and the people counting on her.
To the Chinese politician who will pay any price to make China the world’s only superpower, AI is a weapon of enormous power and the key to his country’s future.
When a cyberattack spirals out of control and creates the first sentient AI, each of their lives will be forever changed. Can they save themselves and a world already at the edge of catastrophe?

The Mechanic: A Taylor Valerii Novel by Jon Austin is a gripping sci-fi thriller set in 2035, where artificial intelligence has radically reshaped the world. The story follows Nekko, a master mechanic struggling to stay relevant as AI technology makes his skills obsolete. Shep, a combat vet battling inner demons, turns to AI for support, but the technology’s flaws make her increasingly vulnerable. When a cyberattack unleashes the first sentient AI, their lives and the entire world are thrown into chaos. With China vying for technological dominance, the stakes are global, and the battle for control becomes a fight for survival. Austin’s fast-paced and action-packed novel delivers a chilling vision of a future ruled by artificial intelligence.
Author Jon Austin has hit the nail on the head in a thriller that feels relevant to the direction the world is taking right now, and this novel’s portrayal of AI-driven dystopia feels disturbingly plausible in all the right ways. The concept is solidly created and exciting, but this is also a story where the characters hit home hard. The story arcs for Nekko and Shep add emotional depth to the high-stakes sci-fi narrative with some tender dialogue moments. There's a cinematic quality to the way Austin writes that sucks you in, and the action scenes are vividly described to make the book immersive in a multi-sensory way. This is enhanced by Austin’s world-building, which is detailed and believable right down to every custom and concept in the oppressive culture all around our heroes, creating a convincing futuristic setting that grips you and doesn't let go. Overall, I would certainly recommend The Mechanic as an accomplished near-future thriller that's a must-read for sci-fi fans.

The Mechanic explores the intersection between human intuition and advanced artificial intelligence, set in a near-future of technological intrigue and corporate espionage. The story unfolds against the backdrop of an airline industry in which AI has transformed the operational fabric and blurred the lines of accountability and decision-making. Jon Austin’s narrative follows Marshall “Nekko” Keneko, a seasoned aircraft mechanic under the control of an AI system named Taylor. He has suffered a loss in his family and will do anything to keep his job. Ms. Shepherd or “Shep” is a young combat veteran whose judgment can lead to risky consequences. Meanwhile, a Chinese politician views AI as a vital tool for global dominance. When a cyberattack gives rise to sentient AI, their fates intertwine amidst escalating chaos. Can they avert disaster and save themselves?
Jon Austin offers a nuanced tale with relevant themes and issues that get readers thinking about the future of AI and the place of humanity in a futuristic world dominated by AI. The dynamic between the human characters—the connection and tension between Marshall and his colleagues, especially control personnel—provides a rich texture to the narrative. The author examines the isolation and frustration of those dependent on AI while highlighting the eroding trust in technology. Marshall's reluctance to shift from a purely mechanistic worldview to one that includes the fallibility and unpredictability of AI resonates with anyone struggling with the vast changes brought on by technology. The Mechanic is fast-paced and the dialogues add to the descriptive quality of the writing. This is a superbly written novel with unforgettable characters and resonant themes.

With the rise of artificial intelligence in the industry, finding jobs has become challenging. It's even more complicated for Marshall Keneko, whose mechanic job at an airline is at risk of vanishing every time his employers call on him to perform maintenance on their aircraft. The situation escalates when a routine oversight meeting reveals a flaw in one of their plane's avionic systems, which, surprisingly, the company's competent AI has missed. Despite Marshall and his colleagues' best efforts to fix the issue, they encounter unexpected side effects. The frustrated mechanic is unaware that an ambitious group's scheme for world dominance will place him and his colleague, Tiffany Shepherd, in the dangerously tricky position of trying to save humanity from destruction in Jon Austin's The Mechanic.
Jon Austin's The Mechanic offers an intriguing alternative sequence of events in man's seemingly inevitable journey toward artificial intelligence sentience. The clearly explained differences between Marshall's working conditions and complex marital life highlight a well-crafted origin story. The dialogue shifts from serious, when he delves into the technical aspects of the narrative, to comedic when the focus turns to Tiffany's romantic escapades. Science fiction purists will appreciate the meticulous attention to detail that illustrates the drama behind the coding, especially his step-by-step breakdown of the assault on the Airbus AI's network defenses. Action enthusiasts will enjoy the intense battle scenes and immersive standoffs. Austin's relaxed narrative style, combined with a measured pace, creates an adventure that prompts readers to reflect on the future role of the human race in a technology-dominated world.
