Description
A chance encounter
She sees the teenage girl on the train platform, standing in the pouring rain, clutching an infant in her arms. She boards a train and is whisked away. But she can't get the girl out of her head…
An act of kindness
Heidi has always been charitable but her family are horrified when she returns home with a young woman named Willow and her baby in tow. Dishevelled and homeless, this girl could be a criminal – or worse. But despite the family's objections, Heidi offers them refuge.
A tangled web of lies
As Willow begins to get back on her feet, disturbing clues into her past starts to emerge. Now Heidi must question if her motives for helping the stranger are unselfish or rooted in her own failures.

I would like to thank Netgallery for allowing me to review this book. I have been planning to read Mary Kubica's first book 'The Good Girl' for some time now, but for whatever reason have never actually got round to it. So when I received the opportunity to read her second book by Netgallery I jumped at it. I was so impressed with this book, both the writing style and the plot itself. I picked the book up at every possible opportunity wanting to know more. The book alternates between the three main characters narrating from their different point of view. It is not so much full of action but the suspense is terrific and you sense things are about to change for the worse. Each character is defined so well and you find yourself siding with each character in turn as the story unwinds.
I found this book a thrill to read and will certainly read Mary Kubica's other book which received such high praise. Another winner from this new author and I am sure someone we will hear a lot more of in the future.
This book is so well written I could easily imagine it becoming a best selling film.
I loved this book! This suspenseful psychological chiller is very well written, the characters real and defined. The author had me engaged from the very first page right through to the end.
The plot was both intriguing and convincing and had me totally engrossed.
Pretty Baby was a captivating, fast paced read and Mary Kubica is definitely an author whose books I will watch out for. . Recommended to all!
I've had The Good Girl by this author on my TBR list for awhile and will now definitely be bumping it up to read ASAP.
Thank you for allowing me to read an early copy of this amazing book.
there's something deeply unsettling with this book. It's characterised by dark people who make you uneasy, unpleasant undertones and disquieting scenarios. Each of the characters have something that puts you on edge -- and this feeling doesn't leave you as you progress through the book. Mary Kubica's skill is evident - the story unfolds and you end up asking yourself questions as to how the character should/could/did respond to the scenario. You know you're not getting the full story and that makes it even more intriguing.
I enjoyed the Good Girl and I highly recommend this too...
Many thanks to Harlequin UK/Mira for an advance readers copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.
WOW - she has done it again. Fascinating characters, uncomfortable storyline and a gripping book which I couldn't put down.
Oh my goodness - what a brilliant read! I loved how the story built up, the characters were great, I sort of guessed what had happened part way through, only to find out I was wrong, guessed again, and yep, again it wasn't what I thought. Its those things in a book that I really enjoy and this has it by the bucket load. The way the story is set is great and the pace as it builds up meant I didn't want to put it down. I have another book by Mary Kubica already on my kindle, its definitely worked it way much much nearer the top of my to read list! Cannot recommend this book highly enough - a brilliant psychological thriller.
Mary Kubicas first book The Good GIrl is on my list of very favourite books-i have recommended it to so many people and made my daughter read it even though she said it wouldn't be her cup of tea (she loved it!). So i was incredibly excited but also nervously cautious about this second novel. What if it didn't live up to The Good Girl? I decided to try to forget it was the same author and trust myself just to read it just as a book I liked the sound of. I shouldn't have worried though as this book is brilliant and I loved it from the very first page till the very last word.
Heidi is one of life's good people. She rescues animals, she recycles, she works with underprivileged people, she helps the homeless which is what draws her to the young girl at the station. Willow and baby Ruby have nowhere to go and no-one to trust...till Heidi decides to take her in.
The story is a 3 way narrative told by Heidi, her husband Chris and Willow herself, who is opening up about the events leading up to her meeting Heidi. It is character driven in a way that makes you feel a certain way about people and then totally tips it on its head! I thought the ending was beautifully handled and wanted to know more about what happened to everyone after the book ended.
For anyone who reads and enjoys this book without having read The Good Girl, then you will now have to go and read that book as well. Pretty Baby more than lives up to that book thankfully so I can now highly recommend both.
I received a copy of this book via netgalley in return for an unbiased review.
I jumped at the opportunity to read Mary Kubica's new novel because I had loved The Good Girl" so much. This didn't disappoint. As before, there are multiple narrators and shifting time frames which both help to build up the reader's interest and the story's suspense. Well-written and with turns in the story to challenge expectations, this is a highly readable book and deserves to be another best-seller.
