Description

Edwina Spinner has lived in the same house for over fifty years. It used to be a busy, crowded family home but now Edwina lives alone and it has grown too big for her. She has decided to sell it.

The young estate agent who comes to value the house sees potential. Knock down a few walls, add a wet room. 'People like a project.' But as Edwina takes him from room to room, she is transported back to her old life as a young mother. Back to her first husband Ollie and their twins, James and Rowena. Back to lies and dark secrets and to a stepson whose name Edwina cannot even bear to speak aloud.

As Edwina's story unravels she is revealed as a complex and intriguing person. Not just the 'frail old lady' trapped in her dated house, but a woman who has lived an extraordinary life, full of love and tragedy. Why is she now so alone? What happened to Edwina's family all those years ago?

Moving - Jenny Eclair's fourth novel - reveals a writer at the height of her powers. Gripping, heart-breaking and laced with black humour, it is a novel of family secrets, shocking betrayals and most of all, of home.

I was so looking forward to reading this book and it exceeded my expectations. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters were real people, the humour was great and the descriptions of the house were fab I was in the house I could totally visualise it. And the ending left me wanting more, I really want more! This is the first book I have read by Jenny Eclair and I will be ordering her previous books. I am so glad I got to review this book. I will be recommending this book to all my girls. Definitely a 5 star read.

A wonderful evocative novel. It was compelling from page one and the characters were so well drawn that I knew the, as f they were my friends or hated neighbours. I cannot repeat what a fantastic book this is and should be number one in the best sellers charts. I just want to read more and more of Fern, Edwina, Charlie, Lucas and Rowena. Jenny Eclair is the new Kate Atkinson and that is high praise in my book.

However, there are two proof reading errors mice pies instead of mince pies and it is. Bryan Ferry not Brian!

What a delightful find! Didn't know at all what to expect from this, but it's now up there in my outstanding read list and I can't wait to read any other books by the very multi- talented 's Eclair' reminded me very much of a combination of Kate Atkinson and Lisa Jewell' s styles in the multi character, layered time span, cleverly interwoven plot.
I completely believed the character of Edwina and lapped up the visits to each of her rooms, where she reminisced so vividly about her past life, setting the scene so cleverly for the second half of this amazing tale of loves lost and broken yet enduring family bonds.

I loved this! A sprawling extended family, with jealousies, tragedy, loves lost and family bonds, the story is told through several different perspectives. Heartbreaking at times but with a hopeful ending, I could empathise with most of the characters at times, few were universally dislikeable. I want to believe that Edwina lives out the rest of her life in the sun and that Lucas can finally find peace and learn to like himself. This is one where I am definitely feeling a 'book hangover' - still thinking about the characters after I've finished reading.
