Description
“We have a great history and once again will have a great future; however this future cannot be forged by relying on welfare or destroying ourselves with gun crime, drugs or violence.”
Based on the author’s personal observations, thoughts and experiences, A New Vision explores the representation of the black community in today’s society. Asking the unanswered questions that plague the media, Bola Ogunkoya attempts to shed some light on the journey taken by those forcibly removed from their homes in Africa. As well as investigating the abolishment of slavery, this book explores why the misrepresentation of black teenagers as failing in school still exists, and why what is widely classed as ‘black on black’ violence is still being committed.
A New Vision asks many important questions about black culture and addresses why rappers, footballers and athletes seem to be the only role models available to young black men in a world where many other public figures can be embraced and admired. Looking at the political structure of the UK and the US, Bola also raises questions about why the US – a country concerned with the brutal legacy of slavery – has produced a black president, a black attorney general and four star black generals, while the UK, a less segregated country, has not.
“I want to stress the need for the black community to excel in the field of education, in order to possess the skills to navigate in a world full of opportunities – to be able to operate from a position of advantage rather than disadvantage,” explains Bola about the motivation behind his book. He goes on to add, “My hope is that this book will enable people to once again dream, take ownership of their destiny and achieve great things as many of our forefathers did. We need to stop being imitators and start to again be innovators.”
