Description

The year is 1642 and King Charles is fighting with Parliament.

Trouble is on the horizon, and Mary Villiers, though not a political player, is part of Charles’s inner circle and about to become very involved in the English Civil War, even as she tries to prevent it.

When Prince Rupert of Rhine comes back to England, potentially to lead Charles’s armies, Mary initially dislikes him. He’s at odds with her goal of preventing the army. However, once she accepts that war is inevitable, she slowly warms to him...

Though she likes her husband, the Duke of Richmond, there is no passion in their marriage. As she grows closer to Prince Rupert, feelings bloom between them that she’s never experienced before.

Mary balances her duties as one of the Queen’s closest handmaids, her adoptive father-like relationship with the King, her marriage to the Duke of Richmond, and her newly found friendship with Rupert while war breaks out across the country she loves.

Both of them are friends with her husband, the king, and many members of the court, so they try to stay away from each other to try and not hurt others, but will their feelings or their will win the contest?

While balancing battle, politics, and being constantly on the move, can Rupert and Mary balance their other relationships?

Sweeping battle scenes, witty conversation, and declarations of true love will pull a reader into the heart of this Civil War and bring them on a journey with the characters. Take a deeper look into how the major players of the English Civil War actually lived their lives.

‘The Winter Prince’ is a, memorable saga, moving across England, and even across the ocean, to illustrate the course of the war and the people fighting. This book is the first in the Terror and Awe: England’s Revolution series.

Praise for ‘The Winter Prince’:

‘Hardcore history buffs will appreciate the fly-on-the-turret view of the dramas besieging the British royal court in 1642, when the country is rocked by civil war.’ Publishers Weekly

‘The depiction of Rupert as a commander is both vivid and convincing. I was particularly impressed by the description of the battles of Newark and Marston Moor … seen as they might have appeared to Rupert at the time, in a spectacular manner.’ Sir Frank Kitson (former Commander-in-Chief, UK Land Forces)

‘Politics and passion, duty and desire provide the key ingredients in The Winter Prince, as Sawyer deftly matches her expertly crafted, history-rich plot with a wonderfully intriguing heroine and bittersweet romance.’ Booklist, American Library Association
