Description

Endearingly flawed and battered-around-the-edges, Charlotte has managed to fashion herself a life that balances marriage and a writing career, but now Esmé, the charming friend Charlotte betrayed at university, stands at Charlotte’s door: Surprise!

Charlotte yearns to make amends, but she’s wary. Esmé makes no mention of Charlotte’s old betrayal and the two resume their friendship, but soon enough a request from Esmé will upend Charlotte’s careful world.

Suspenseful, witty, with spot-on evocations of university life in the late 1980s, As Good as Dead performs an exquisite psychological high-wire act, exploring loves and friendships poisoned by secrets and fears.

I was given the opportunity to read and review this book for free on netgalley. This is an incredibly well written book which is centred around two old college friends, Esme and Charlotte, who are reunited many years later. Charlotte however, is harbouring a dark secret which could change both the women's lives. This is a very witty and extremely dark novel about the "frenemy" from hell!

You will reap what you sow. Unfortunately, Charlotte is giving a lot of thought to that old saying when she attends the Iowa Writer’s Workshop. She’s too busy basking in the glow of the attention she’s getting from the sophisticated and successful Esme. But Esme is by turns hot, then cold. One minute listening attentively to Charlotte the next, shunning her. By the end of the workshop, Charlotte is so confused and frustrated that she strikes back at Esme. Twenty years later, Charlotte is married with a career as a writer and a professor. One day she gets a surprise visit from Esme. It’s time for payback and if Charlotte won’t comply with the unethical plot Esme has cooked up, well, let’s just say that Charlotte isn’t really left any choice.

A creepy and insidious thriller that got under my skin. Loved it!

Thanks to netgalley for the opportunity to read this book.
The past will always come back to haunt you, no matter how you hide away.
This is so true in this book. At a writer's workshop, Charlotte did something that was quite horrific. Twenty years later, her past comes back in the form of her friend at the workshop, Esme. It was such an entertaining read to try and see how Charlotte copes with her past, and the ending of the book was done very well. I really enjoyed this book and can highly recommend it.

I found this a compelling story with great characters. It is a story of betrayal and the deviousness of the human heart.I found it difficult to put down but was a little disappointed with the ending .

A quite interesting story about two girls who meet at college. One is a creative writing student called Charlotte, and the other is the same but called Esme. They both meet the men they marry - called Will and Jeremy respectively. Eventually they lose contact.
Then some years later Charlotte is an English and writing Professor, and due to judge a prestigious writing competition. Out of the blue she is contacted by Esme, who asks to meet up.
Then the problems begin. First Esme knows that Charlotte had a one night stand with Jeremy and he got her pregnant. Then Chjarlotte has a abortion, and Esme nurses her when she is ill afterwards. Unfortunately Jeremy is a failed writer, and Esme is now trying to blackmail Charlotte into judging his piece of writing for the first prize of the literary competition.
Luckily, Will sees through the ruse, and is willing to forgive all, and goes to tell Esme and Jeremy to leave his wife alone.
An above average story, about the way other people can manipulate you, and then throw things back in your face.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the cance of reading and reviewing this book.
