Description
“It’s the American lawyer [...] he’s linked to Christian fanatics in America threatening to kill rich people...”
The Disciple follows the story of Angela Black, a detective inspector with Cambridge police, who has been asked to investigate an American lawyer from Boston on a visit to the UK. The suspect is rumoured to be a disciple of Agnus Dei, a fanatical Christian group that threatens to assassinate members of America’s power elite.
Two days after the lawyer arrives in Cambridge, he disappears. FBI information shows that the lawyer may be trying to forge a link with Islamic fundamentalists, and a manhunt begins involving police, security, and military forces. D.I. Black's pursuit of the suspect as a missing person takes her to London, Boston and El Salvador, where she breaks the rules to solve the case but leaves her own safety disastrously at risk.
Back in the UK, it becomes clear the lawyer has been taken hostage by the Islamic fundamentalists he hoped to work with. He is shot in a gun battle only hours after Angela Black returns from Boston with the answers to the case. However, readers will learn how her visit to him shortly before he dies allows her to resolve the investigation in a curious way.
“The Disciple focuses on the psychological dimensions of both the crime and the investigation, giving the story a double edge”, comments Don.
