If you like your stories with an intelligent narrator and thought-provoking situations then you will love this book. A tale of several characters dealing with the horrific aftermath of a rape of a young girl and the ripple effects throughout the community and her family. Cleverly narrated and gripping All in Not Forgotten is unlikely to be "forgotten" by readers for a while. Highly recommended and my thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC copy.
All Is Not Forgotten has a fascinating, clever and compelling plot. What if you could forget a particular traumatic time in your life? Something that could have a major impact on you. But while your mind has forgotten, what if your body hasn't? What if somewhere in the back of your mind, the memories remain? What if you then let those memories back to find the perpetrator of the crime?
But what if it's not you this has happened to - what if it's your child? Would you let them take the pill that will make them forget their past? And then would you be prepared to let them remember it all over again?
The novel is narrated by a psychiatrist who is involved with Jenny and her family, trying to help them put their lives back together. It's a slow burner but the pace and tension gradually build up. It's clear that Jenny's rape has a major impact on her whole family. And, as expected, they are all struggling to cope with the aftermath.
All Is Not Forgotten is horrifying in the way it gets right inside your mind. I loved the psychology and science background, focusing on memories and the imprint they leave behind. This is a shocking and highly thought-provoking read, and I sat thinking about it for some time after I finished the final page, with my head buzzing.
I received an Advance Reader Copy in exchange for an honest review.
I can say that All is Not Forgotten will be one of the books that I will thinking about that long after I finished reading it.When Jenny is brutally raped she is given a drug to help her forget the event, despite her father's wishes. When she attempts suicide eight months later the family start seeing a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist is the main narrator, but parts are also narrated by other people during the counselling sessions. You get to see how each family member is coping or otherwise. He is also counselling an ex soldier who has had the same drug administered after he was injured whilst on duty. He becomes a good friend to Jenny under the watchful eye of the psychiatrist. I found it a little slow at first. It become much more gripping after the suicide attempt when the sessions started. Even though the novel is mainly about Jenny and her parents the psychiatrist and his family are also prominent. At first I liked him but when I read his thoughts about his family, especially his wife, I saw him in a different light. It would be very easy to dislike both parents and the psychiatrist but they were all trying to do the best thing for Jenny and help her deal with what happened to her. All of them were affected by events in their own childhood and when you realised what they were you understood more why they handled the crisis the way they did. How they handled it might not have been the correct way but what the author does very well is demonstrate how fear, loyalty, guilt and anger all affect rationality. It's a great read, brutal and shocking at times but very clever.
I received this as an arc from net galley in exchange for an honest review. Jenny ' s wounds have healed.
An experimental treatment has removed the memory of a horrific and degrading attack. She is moving on with her life.
Wow. Absolutely fantastic read. CNPID. Very emotional and moving read. I really felt for Jenny and what she went through. Had so many emotions while reading this.
Very cleverly written. Dr Foster was my favourite character. I was surprised with who it was. I loved the ending too. This is a must read and I would highly recommend this book. Definitely worth more than 5 *.
Interesting and very cleverly written.
The first thing I noticed was the style because the book felt narrated. Initially it appeared to be centred about Jenny and her memory suppression/recovery. Yet appearances can be deceptive with Jenny simply being one of the key players. The plot too surprised me, the ending is not something I had foreseen. Like a Jigsaw puzzle the reader only gets to see the complete picture when the last part of the puzzle is complete.
Original and surprising. Mark my words; This is going to be one of those books everyone is talking about.
Highly recommend.
Review as posted on Goodreads:
I was drawn to this book by the enticing pre-publication blurb
I liked the way much of the story is drawn from the interviews of Alan, a psychologist who becomes closely embroiled in the treatment and therapy session of many of the characters in the story. Not least, Jenny and her parents Charlotte and Tom.
This is quite literally a psychological thriller. Along the way there are several interesting and believable suspects. Is there a final twist to create a credible dénouement? You'll need to read it to find out.
My thanks to Netgalley and Mira UK (Harlequin) for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
I read the book in two days. I really enjoyed this book although at times I felt angry for Jenny the teenager in the story. After being brutally raped it is suggested she tries a drug that will erase her memory of the attack. If only it were that simple! What follows is a interesting and excellent story.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC.
This is a brilliantly written psychological thriller. Wendy Walker has the ability to make you simultaneously love and hate the characters. I love how the story is mainly narrated by the Psychiatrists but also have in snippets of how the other characters feel and what they experience. This was the first book in a long time that had me really anxious about what was going to happen next. The ending will blow your mind. I would highly recommend All is not Forgotten if you are into psychological thrillers.
One of the most absorbing books I have read this year, it tells the story narrated by a Psychiatrist who cares for a young teen who was brutally raped at a party, the way he cares for her and her family.
The writer I thought uses her skills introducing the twists and many turns that I could not put my kindle down.
Thankyou to Harlequin (UK) Ltd and Netgalley for an ARC
As a father of two daughters I found the beginning of the book very difficult, however I would really encourage people to read on. The book entwines the love of two dads and what they would do for their child. Without giving the plot away the father of Jenny who is attacked displays that sense of failure in being unable to protect his daughter. The other father is about protecting their child at all costs. As the plot of the book unfolds there are times when you feel you know the outcome but right to the end the twists and turns keep coming so by the end you feel emotionally drained and challenged. Would have no hesitation in recommending this book.
Well where to start! This book is delightfully dark and gripping with numerous twists and turns. I have to say that I struggled with the narrative in the first few pages: it reads a little like a Freud case study, but once I became accustomed to the style I was hooked. It's ripe for turning into a film, so read it before then.
A bit of the plot ....... a young girl 'Jenny' is violently raped at a party and her (let's all be happy and smiley smiley) mother agrees to the use of a drug that will block the girls memory of the rape. If only it were that easy. The drug has been given to another young man with poor consequences, and Jenny fairs no better. The narrator is the psychiatrist of the pair who is seeking to bring back the memories of both so that they can gain closure. Memories; however, can be dangerous things.
Jenny's family is falling apart, and past and present secrets boil to the surface. The police start to track the rapist and the full story unfolds and takes you in a vice like grip. I have to confess that I attended work practically comatose after reading this book for most of the night!
The book is full of provocative questions - how far would you go for your children? would your ethics take second place? would you harm another to save your child? You may think that this book is about 'Jenny' but it's not, it's about so much more. If I had to sum the book up in a few words I would say consequences and deceit. Nothing is quite what you expect with this book and that's what keeps the pages turning.
The characters in this book are great, weird, flawed and at times downright creepy, but great. It really does take some talent to craft characters with such depth of personality. I intensely disliked the psychiatrist and I wanted to slap the mother. I always think it takes a very good book to bring forth strong emotion. The minor characters are also memorable and fully drawn which again is a major tick on my list.
I really don't want to give to much away and spoil this one for anyone. Go and make a brew, put your feet up, and read it.
Definitely an author to follow and add to your reading lists.
Thanks to NetGalley, author and publisher for providing a copy to review.
What an absolute thriller of a book. I love the fresh take on this subject, and the story as Dr. Alan Forester gradually comes out and his character gains momentum, maintained right up to the end. A genuinely well-written book that was an enthralling pleasure to read.
I was given an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an independent review. Excellently narrated by the therapist this story is quite shocking in subject matter and goes far beyond the actual trauma. I really enjoyed the in depth view of the other characters and the way that the scientific elements of the treatment were explained so clearly that even to a lay person it was very comprehensible. All the characters are well developed and very interesting, some multi dimensional and not what they appear initially. A true psychological thriller which kept me interested and on tenterhooks all the way through. Highly recommend it. 5*****
All is Not Forgotten is an absorbing book you will not soon forget. It's got the power to stay with you for some time as you think through the implications of the events that unfolded within its pages. Gripping stuff? Yes, in a quiet understated way - not like you'd expect - but the story is solid and will surely pull you in.
I cannot easily put my finger on what makes this book shine so bright...it's mainly the depth of the characters. Being narrated by a psychiatrist treating key players within the story, we are granted access to feelings and backstories that may not be so easily plumbed if written differently. The current trauma that makes Jenny and her family seek help uncovers all sorts of buried skeletons lurking in the psyche of Tom (Jenny's dad) and Charlotte (Jenny's mom). This feeds the story beyond Jenny's rape and helps develop those characters more fully.
I enjoyed the intricacy of this book but I cannot overlook the serious breaches of client confidentiality that were done with a mixed bag of good and bad results. I hope real-world professionals working in the psychiatric field wouldn't normally be so loose lipped.
The concept behind the PTSD memory erasing treatment is interesting. It seems like such a good idea but no memory clearly doesn't mean a quicker recovery from the trauma.
All is Not Forgotten is a well rounded book that will make you think. The ending was unexpected and satisfying in a twisty, almost cringe-worthy way. I eagerly anticipate more books from this talented author!
Fascinating insight into the power of the mind and even more the power of the person able to manipulate it. I must admit I had concerns about some of the facts discussed and their implications but the conclusion was reassuring. Great read especially if you have an enquiring mind and enjoy controversy.
This book gave me goose bumps! Another 'out of comfort zone' style book, but in this case it is very rewarding to try something new! The title may be 'all is not forgotten' but I can safely say that this book will not be forgotten very quickly!
This is the best book I have read in a while. Cleverly written from one characters perspective but managing to reveal the other characters perspectives in some way too - very difficult to describe unless you read it. The story builds and builds, to a brilliantly written and very dramatic ending that is unexpected as well as being a "ohhh - of course moment" when you read it! Pieces of the puzzle fall into place beautifully. I highly recommend this book if you like a gritty plot, written with good detail and in a way that isn't afraid to be controversial or hide the horrible, gory facts. It isn't for the faint hearted and this made me love it even more. I have literally just finished the last page and wanted to write this review quickly while the story was fresh in my head. It is a complicated plot, you need to concentrate but thats not a bad thing right?! Great read.
What a Powerful, Shocking read. Explores how Memories can change our Lives in unimaginable ways. One of my Favourite reads if 2016.
An exciting and different tale narrated by the psychiatrist with a wonderful and powerful story line that kept me guessing the outcome.
With thanks to NetGalley for this book, free in return for an honest review
All is not Forgotten is unlikely to be forgotten.
A tale of trauma of the worst kind, the brutal rape of a girl and a young man with PTSD whose lives cross whilst in therapy.
The treatment as it's called within this book is a way to heal your mind by erasing terrible memories, memories of a rape or of a battle, a new way to deal with the trauma of such brutality. The problem is, does it actually work, or will it in fact make the trauma harder to deal with?
Narrated by the therapist this is a brilliantly clever book which I found gripping if rather disturbing. It's brutal content is not for the faint hearted so please take heed, graphic scenes are played out throughout and they don't pull any punches.
Though this was a difficult read in some respects it was in fact a brilliant book, and a new author to add to my list.

Synopsis:
Jenny’s wounds have healed.
An experimental treatment has removed the memory of a horrific and degrading attack.
She is moving on with her life.
That was the plan. Except it’s not working out.
Something has gone. The light in the eyes. And something was left behind. A scar. On her lower back. Which she can’t stop touching.
And she’s getting worse.
Not to mention the fact that her father is obsessed with finding her attacker and her mother is in toxic denial.
It may be that the only way to uncover what’s wrong is to help Jenny recover her memory. But even if it can be done, pulling at the threads of her suppressed experience will unravel much more than the truth about her attack.
And that could destroy as much as it heals.
Review:
Jenny's story is told via sessions with therapist, Alan, who also has sessions with Jenny's mum and dad, and as such becomes an integral part of a local detective's hunt for her attacker. The small American town where the attack took place, and the family live, is one where everyone knows each other, making such an horrific attack on one of their own unthinkable. The transcripts of each person's therapy sessions are detailed and intriguing, with therapist Alan also including information from some of his other patients, as he sees it being pertinent to the case.
This is such a cleverly written book, it's so hard to put down, and i read it so quickly. The way that each main character's tale is recounted means there's a lot of information as well as a lot of emotion, but this all adds to the suspense and intrigue and doesn't detract from the main point. Some of this is very hard reading, due to the severity of the attack on Jenny, but it doesn't feel gratuitous in any way.
It's hard to say too much more without giving the game away, but suffice to say that the tension is ramped up with every chapter, I was utterly incredulous at several points and the conclusion is a revelation I'd not forseen. All in all, this is a tightly wound psychological thriller I'd recommend to all readers of the genre. Be prepared for a white knuckle ride!
Special thanks to the author and publisher for providing an ARC, via NetGalley, in return for my honest review.
A thought-provoking book which didn't shy away from difficult themes. I enjoyed it as much for solving the mystery of the rape as for learning about the process of therapy. Gripping and unnerving and will probably reduce you to tears as you are drawn into the world of a family and community shattered by a rape attack.
This book was written in such an unexpected and fascinating way. When i began reading it was completely different to what i was expecting but in the best way. The POV gave such a unique take on this family going through such a terrible time and i was never sure what twist the story would have next. I definitely recommend this book.
This book started with a description of an attack that was so shocking and graphic I found myself holding my breath in the hope that the victim would somehow get away. The story progressed with gusto until the introduction of the psychologist - in the beginning I found his manner of narrating his side of things slightly jargonised and stilted. However from about half way in the book something 'occurred' and his demeanour totally changed. Lots of twists and turns as well as a little frustration at behaviours of some characters. Will keep you guessing till the end.
