Description
The World Order has changed.
Man no longer leads. He is led.
‘One of those writers on whom critics have already lavished almost every word of praise possible.’ BBC Radio 2
A natural successor to Orwell’s 1984, Fistful of Digits is one of the most terrifyingly prophetic novels of the 1960s.
It is a gripping sci fi story about humanity’s struggle and embrace with technological advancement, and the repercussions reaped on those scientists and engineers who seek control or fear a race of self-programming computers.
Mankind is not fully equipped to control the activities of self-determining computers.
They are all too ready to give up their identity to a future world of technology.
In this terrifying vision of a changing Earth, Hodder-Williams encapsulates all we fear in the modern era – the loss of what makes us human.
Further Praise for Christopher Hodder-Williams:
‘Has a comfortable place among the best catastrophe writers – Verne, Wyndham, and Wells’ Times Literary Supplement
‘A fascinating allegory which has its own peculiar quality of terror’ Guardian Journal
‘One of the best anti-technological, pro-human pieces of science fiction that I have ever read’ The Sun
‘Mr Hodder-Williams is absorbing … writes science fiction in that too rare Wellsian sense of solidly worked-out fiction exploring solidly worked-out science.’ Sunday Telegraph
‘Great fun’ The Daily Telegraph
‘Exceedingly exciting … The action is as vigorous as the plot, and perhaps the most remarkable feature of the novel is the brilliant way in which the author couples the complex ABC of electronics with a high-ranging imagination.’ Glasgow Herald
Christopher Hodder-Williams was an English writer, mainly of science fiction, but he wrote novels about aviation and espionage as well. Before his career in writing, Hodder-Williams joined the army in 1944, and served in the Middle East and lived in Kenya and New York, later settling in the UK. Many of his books are early examples of what would later be called techno-thrillers. He also worked as a composer and lyricist, and wrote numerous plays for television.
