Freed at last from the threatening presence of her violent husband, Tildy continues her solitary struggle to earn a living for herself and little Davy.

At the Fountain Needle Mill she gets work in the lye wash shop: gruelling toil for pitiful wages, wages that she desperately needs, so to stay working it is only prudent to stay out of trouble.

But the tragedy of twelve-year-old Meg Tullett, a simple-minded wench raped by one of the mill’s overlookers, spurs Tildy into action.

Unable to control her temper when she discovers what has happened, Tildy is determined to get justice and attempts to have the man prosecuted and hung.

With no evidence to back up her claims apart from the shaky testimonial of a terrified Meg, Tildy sees with new clarity the brutal injustice of a law which fails to hear the plight of those who need protection the most.

When Josh Dyson, a skilled and handsome worker at the mill, secretly tells Tildy of his revolutionary aspirations against the ruling classes, she realises they have more in common than she thought.

Josh plans to form a risky and forbidden ‘combination’, a union of organized workers. His knowledge and vision inspire Tildy, but powerful forces are at work against them.
