Description
Kirsty Fairly lives with her family at Fairlyden, a small farmstead in the Southwest of Scotland.
Dairy farming is in the Fairly blood and when Kirsty’s Grandfather dies, he leaves the entire estate to Kirsty.
James MacFarlane has been a farm worker at Fairlyden all his life, but when he is offered a position at neighbouring farm Ninthandale, he takes it.
Kirsty feels betrayed and almost heartbroken…
But all feelings are put aside when war breaks out.
World War Two is set to put a huge strain on the Britain’s food supply which has barely recovered from the first world war.
All the farmers must work harder than ever.
When a visitor from America arrives in the village, he is seemingly interested in the property he has inherited. But as Kirsty gets to know him, she is wooed in to letting her guard down.
A government representative by the name of Mr Steel visits to ensure that everybody at Fairlyden is pulling their weight, but it becomes clear that he does not have good intentions and his corruption could tear Fairlyden apart.
Lucy and Paddy, workers of Fairlyden, accept evacuees in to their home.
The two children and the baby are a sight for sore eyes but the mother who arrives with them is a nightmare.
When she leaves and takes the eldest with her, everyone at Fairlyden falls in love with Lenny and Irene.
But when the mother sends for Lenny, Lucy is distraught and terrified of sending him back to the danger in Glasgow.
With no end in sight, the war rages on, Fairlyden has to give some of its family and workers to the armed forces.
Everyone has to work twice as hard to produce enough food and dairy to help keep the country going but Kirsty is struggling to keep her head above water without the money for equipment to replace the workers.
When James MacFarlane is sent away to work, Kirsty is more upset than she expected, but after their falling out, she is determined to move on.
She has to be responsible for Fairlyden and all the lives that depend on it.
Will Kirsty ever find her true love?
Will the war claim their loved ones?
Can Kirsty save Fairlyden?
Fairlyden At War is a gripping historical romance set in the Scottish Highlands during the Second World War.
