Description

Born in a log-cabin in Kentucky on 12th February 1809, Abraham Lincoln, or Abe as he was known, was a peculiar child who longed to read and to learn.

His parents, Thomas and Nancy, thought he was an ugly baby and were not to have known that this little boy, named after his grandfather, was to become the sixteenth President of the United States.

Afflicted by a melancholic disposition as well as a naturally humorous streak, Lincoln was a misfit at a time when America itself was on the cusp of dramatic change. Intelligent and spiritual like his mother, he was also cautious and awkward but highly ambitious.

Throughout Lincoln’s life, the duration of his formal education amounted to less than a year. A short but committed stint at a ‘blab-school’, where he was encouraged to learn things by memory, provides an early insight into his prodigious intellect.

When his mother tragically died, he found a friend in his step-mother, a woman who later admitted she never wanted him to run for President, owing to her instinctive concerns for his safety.

Serving in the Black Hawk War, Abraham completed his military service with a profound sympathy and a tolerance that could have only have been perceived as curious at the time. He was a champion of the underdog and a pioneer, a man with a gentle soul and an iron will.

Lincoln continued to pursue an education by reading books on grammar and law, as well as classic novels and poetry including the works of Shakespeare and Burns. Interestingly, it was only after he was taken to court himself that he began to seriously consider a legal career, which was to set him on his path to Presidency.

The Young Lincoln is a uniquely personal exploration of Abraham Lincoln; the past he was unable to share, the loves he lost and the personal legacy he left behind.

Esther Meynell (1878 – 1955) was a English author. She lived in Sussex and wrote many books on the area. Through marriage, Esther was the niece of poet and suffragette Alice Meynell. She is also known for her The Little Chronicle of Magdalena Bach, a fictional autobiography of Anna Magdalena Bach, the wife of composer Johann Sebastian Bach.
