Description
1942. Murmansk.
The HMS Edinburgh is sailing in Russian territory, a bulwark against Nazi invaders.
Mike Cox, a sixteen-year-old sailor is part of an eight-hundred-strong crew aboard the Edinburgh.
An east-end London boy, Mike is about to be thrown into the heat of war.
A Russian ship approaches the Edinburgh and boards.
Their cargo: over a thousand tons of gold. The Soviet Union’s payment for the Royal Navy’s protection.
Now the HMS Edinburgh is tasked with safeguarding a fortune as well as the Barent Sea.
But when a German U-Boat approaches and fires torpedoes at the Edinburgh’s hull, Mike and his crew must fight for their lives and decide whether to save themselves or their precious cargo.
Amid chaos and destruction, Mike is one of only a few survivors to escape from the wreck of the Edinburgh. The gold sinks eight hundred feet to the bottom of the Sea.
After making his way back to London, Mike finds himself even more alone than in the dingy Russian rescue camp in the Kola Inlet.
His mother and brother have both perished as a result of the calamities of war.
Lonely and without purpose, Mike decides to train to become a diver with one objective in mind.
To rescue that precious Arctic Gold.
But Mike is not the only one looking for it…
As the years pass by, Mike dives deeper into the bloody legacy left behind by the wreck of the Edinburgh.
And when millionaire Milovan Krassnik effectively kidnaps Mike and forces him to dive time and again for treasure, Mike must struggle to keep the gold a secret from the one man with the power to take his only purpose in life away from him.
Will Mike be able to rescue his life from the bottom of the ocean?
Or will Arctic Gold drag him down to the depths forever with it?
'A thrilling action story.' - Tom Kasey, best-selling author of 'Trade Off'.
John Man is a bestselling historian and author of ‘Genghis Khan’, ‘Kublai Khan’ and ‘The Great Wall’.
