Description
Jim Carver is restless in London.
Once a sergeant stationed in France, he now works in St. John’s Wood and is secretly dreading the inevitable fact that he is expected to marry Cherry Mitchell.
Cherry is undeniably pretty, but also slightly spoilt and desperate to get away from her strict and religious father, Bill.
On paper, Jim and Cherry are perfect together.
Yet somehow, their relationship lacks depth and they both have a lingering feeling that they would not be happy together once married.
When Jim announces he is going to Boulogne on an outing with the Hand and Flower Darts Club, things finally come to a head.
Cherry, fiercely competitive, resolves to test the relationship.
Once in France, the group from The Hand and Flower pub split up.
For many of them, it is their first time returning to France since the war and the journey is bittersweet.
However, others have more outrageous plans, involving signing up to the Foreign Legion and seeking out premises that promise a good time...
Jim visits the graves of old comrades and ends up at the farm of Marie-Josephe Berthier – a woman who he has never forgotten since meeting several years before.
Marie-Josephe is astonishingly beautiful but engaged to Henri Dubot, a local lawyer.
Back in London, Cherry has stumbled across a man from America who advises her to break it off with Jim.
Will Marie-Josephe confess her love for Jim before he returns home?
And does Cherry plan to be there waiting for him?
The Hand and Flower is a mesmerising story of love, destiny and unbreakable ties.
