The value chain describes the full range of activities that firms and workers do to bring a product from its conception to its end use and beyond. This includes activities such as design, production, marketing, distribution and support to the final consumer. Value chain activities can occur within or between firms, within a single geographical location or spread across wider areas, and can produce goods or services. The overall goal of the value chain is to create value that exceeds the cost of providing a product or service, thus generating a profit margin.

Building Effective Value Chains is a great book for any student studying Business Strategy or marketing. I am studying both at MBA level and McGuffog's book has been an excellent source of examples and case studies regarding the business chain both in the public and private sectors. I particularly liked the case studies as often in exams at MBA level you are required to supply real time examples and this book has helped me prepare for my pending final exams. I would recommend this book to all students studying both business strategy and marketing as it looks at both. Thanks NetGalley and Kogan for allowing me to read, use and review this book.
