Description

You don't know me. Not yet. I don't have a name, or even anything like an identity. I'm just kind of a nobody, drifting through life and going quietly about my business. Or I was. Then one day evil came to town. Murder, fear, and horror followed. And if I want to stop it, I have to destroy my quiet life and disturb the universe. I have to find out why I exist. I have to discover the true nature of whatever god rules from on high. He's got some things to answer for.

The Eternal Footman is part hardboiled detective story, part existential drama about a lost man fighting to make sense of the insane world in which he finds himself trapped.

You don't know me. Not yet. I don't have a name, or even anything like an identity. I'm just kind of a nobody, drifting through life and going quietly about my business. Or I was. Then one day evil...

I found the description of “The Eternal Footman” on NetGalley intriguing and down loaded a free copy. And immediately realized that I had found yet another example of a new trend in fantasy- tales of ghosts & the afterlife that are thoughtful about life and our beliefs. “The Eternal Footman” is another wonderful addition to this genre. After decades dominated by witches/vampires, sword & sorcery I’m enjoying this shift but if your taste runs to more traditional fantasy with romance and/or swordfights, this may not be for you.

The unnamed narrator is not “death” but an “escort” for the recently departed leading them (or being led BY them) to their bright light/crossing over point. The story itself is a mystery wrapped in a mystery with the narrator knowing no more than you do- even his own name. It is an engrossing but dark story leavened with some pretty funny moments. And while there is resolution to the mysteries, we are left with another larger one. Although this is completely satisfying as a standalone I could see an entire series spooling out from that mystery.

I’m finding new, smaller publishers to be a great source for original, non-formula works. I’m very much enjoying books that “break the mold” like “The Eternal Footman”. If you’re ready for something different I recommend this one.

Well written novel. Attempts to make any sense of horrific tragedies, and death of innocents. The footman is the guide to the next life, seemingly non judgemental however ultimately we learn that he has his own doubts and questions.

An extremely unusual book. It makes the reader think about the overarching themes of religious beliefs and its place in the world. In comparison there is the tale of a killer on the loose who taunts the main character. A very intriguing look at what happens when you die and how you are ushered onto the next realm.
I would recommend this book as it made me very thoughtful after enjoying the complex themes of this book.
