Description
The long road back to yourself…
It’s late October 1989, only a matter of weeks before the destruction of communism and the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Tristan, a former east-block journalist currently holed up in London, runs into an eccentric American doctor, Dr Jonathan Blul.
The Hungarian’s trials and tribulations fascinate the good doctor, particularly his insider views on communism.
It’s not long after Tristan arrives in London that he realises the West is not all it promised to be – he cannot find a job anywhere and there are few prospects for someone of his ethnicity.
Amidst his own inertia and his constant doubts, he longs for his native Budapest.
When it finally becomes safe enough for him to go back, Tristan longs to return to his homeland.
But deep down he needs to atone, to deserve his return.
Who doesn’t want to come home in triumph?
An act of liberation is required, and it involves taking down Tristan’s greatest nemesis – a corrupt Chilean broadcaster who badly humiliated him in the past.
Eager to help, Dr Blul and his companion, a Chinese lady who is a patient of his, accompany Tristan on the first leg of his journey home.
The trio quickly form a strong bond – a wider Jules et Jim – and it’s not long before feelings of love begins to develop amongst their constant teasing and cultural bickering.
With the help of his new friends, the winding road home also becomes a path to finding himself.
Budapest My Love is a complex story, which travels the world in an effort to mirror our lifelong journey to find our true selves.
Anthony Steyning is the author of four previous novels. His first, The Vortical Man, was published in Paris and led to Steyning meeting Lawrence Durrell, who became a supporter of his work. His most recent, The Applicant, was published by The Book Guild in 2004. Anthony Steyning has also written three plays, two of which have been performed in Montreal and New York. Having travelled extensively throughout his life, the author currently resides in southern Spain.
