Description

This comprehensive and user-friendly handbook is aimed at parents who are looking for childcare for their baby or young child. Childcare expert and working mum Elyssa Campbell-Barr guides parents through the process of finding the right childcare provider for their family.

As well as looking at the pros and cons of each type of care, she gives ideas of questions to ask and things to look out for when meeting prospective childcarers. There’s practical advice on crucial issues such paying for childcare, finding provision for children with additional needs, and building a good relationship with your childcarer, plus top tips on your rights as a working parent and juggling work and family life.

Throughout, working and studying parents share their real-life experiences of, and advice on, choosing and using childcare. And every section includes links to details of specialist organisations and publications that provide useful information, either UK-wide or (where regulations and requirements differ) in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Choosing Childcare is attractively designed and illustrated with photographs, and boxed-out highlights, making it inviting to read and easy to search through. It will have an accompanying website so that parents can keep up-to-date with information on pay rates, benefits and the latest thinking on childcare.

Advance Praise

“Wonderful. How I wish this book had been available when my children were young.”

Jilly Cooper, bestselling novelist and grandmother

'Choosing Childcare is a comprehensive guide, packed with information in an accessible, easy-to-read format. It represents a valuable resource for parents setting out to navigate the daycare possibilities to find the best option for them.'

Gill Rapley, co-author of Baby-led Weaning and Baby-led Parenting

"Choosing Childcare is well written, produced and designed and accessible, and will be so helpful to so many parents. The ‘childcare at glance' table is brilliant; so informative and yet jargon free – excellent. I also like the fact it is inclusive of fathers – so rare and yet so relevant to modern-day living, as is the section on your rights as a working parent and leave entitlements. (Let’s hope this will encourage more families to take up Shared Parental Leave). The section on paying for childcare will be just so helpful as it is a minefield.”

Charlie Rice, The Fatherhood Institute
