Description
In any war, there are many factors that could go wrong. However, if the policies that surround a war are in error, this can have a much greater impact; a more serious consequence.
Lord Robert Vansittart’s appointment at the Foreign Office marked the start of two potentially unnecessary wars.
Lord Vansittart pamphlet, Black Record, consisted of a lot of anti-German propaganda. Most of his broadcasts revolved around one key theme: that Germany was the sole, and constant, trouble-maker from the beginnings of European history.
The world consisted of otherwise honest, trustful and peace-loving people. Vansittart’s pattern remaining consistent: the Germans were responsible for disrupting the peace.
The consequence was that Britain entered two wars that could have been avoided. Wars that left Britain and its people badly damaged.
Grenfell, a captain of the British Navy himself, presents an in-depth analysis of the events that form a significant part of European history.
Born in 1892 to Captain Hubert Henry Grenfelland his wife, Eleanor Kate Cunningham, Grenfell was promoted to Lieutenant a few years after he first went to sea. Having served on battleships, he was appointed to command destroyers. Prior to his retirement, he served as senior commander at the Royal Naval Staff College in Greenwich.
Since his retirement, and almost to the end of his life, Russell Grenfell wrote, with great clarity, about a number of issues he was convinced would aid the navy in subsequent wars or battles. He died, aged 62, in 1954.
