Description
The Great War is raging, and Bob Spiers, a Hampshire boy, is a pilot in the Royal Flying Corps.
After some brief training, the seventeen-year-old is sent to the airfield at Mailly. In four weeks he sees a dozen men die.
And now, with little experience, he is training other men, some even younger than him, to fly and to fight.
When two boys he trains die in a matter of days, Spiers knows changes need to be made.
He suggests new tactics, and the next day he and his squadron down the enemy. His superiors want the same again, but Spiers knows variety is key.
The Germans are not stupid, despite what Headquarters think…
Spiers may be young, but he is well versed in military history. He sees the mistakes being made, and knows what has to be done.
When things get ugly on a night out with the boys in nearby Amiens, he receives orders to go to St Omer. There he discovers he is now part of 77th Squadron, at Lourcounter.
This is where the mavericks, the misfits, the ones who question command, the ones who marry the wrong girl are sent. Here Spiers discovers the British class system is alive and well in the military hierarchy.
Meanwhile, there’s a girl… or two.
Barbara Welland, from his hometown, a nice girl, and Michelle Martine, from an aristocratic family. He thinks he loves them both, at least when he has time to think.
But then a raid he plans goes wrong, and Bob Spiers crashes to earth, in more ways than one.
