I started "You drive me crazy" with hardly any expectations and it came as a positive surprise.
Maddinson isn't looking forward to spend a year abroad with her job, especially not Seoul as her dream was New York. Another down for her is her new grumpy boss Mark.
In the beginning I had some struggles with the characters and couldn't connect with them but it got better after a while. I had a lot of fun going to Seoul with Maddison as well as Mark. I found it very entertaining how Maddison had to get used to the new lifestyle but also getting to know Mark better.
The setting in Seoul was also also very nice and the author showed the differences between the cultures and how a European is a little bit struggling in the Korean culture.
The love story was cute but also got a little bit spicy. Maddison and Mark made a nice couple and I really enjoyed their story.
Really enjoyable read. Good characters and a Good story. Well worth a read. Think others will enjoy.
Oh the characters in this book were just so expressive, Maddison made me smile from the very start and Mark was so easy to visualise - the authors descriptions brought them to life beautifully!
Maddison’s predicament was highly entertaining and I was excited to see where it would lead. The way she reacted to life in Korea regularly had me chuckling to myself, she certainly wasn’t someone who embraced change so I had a feeling the development of this particular character would be quite dramatic.
The chemistry between Maddison and Mark was exciting, some of you might not be fond of the hate turning to love storyline but I particularly enjoyed this side of it. The bickering between the two of them made me smile but there were some moments that were a little uncomfortable to read - Mark didn’t always come across well and there were times when I found myself disliking him.
Favourite Moments
* A tense flight
* Ficus repositioning
* Rafting
* Drunken consequences
This was an enjoyable read that had me chuckling out loud in the best kind of way.
I really enjoyed reading this book, and loved all the quirkyness about Seoul, especially as my partner really wants us to go there. My only niggle is that the first part of this book was really good, well paced, even if the main character was slightly annoying. But once I was past the halfway mark I knew what the ending would be and was so frustrated with how the two main characters were acting! Overall it was an lighthearted book, easy for beach reading!
I have bought this book in a kindle format and will read it in due course.
Madison had never been abroad for work. She got the opportunity to go to Seoul instead in New York. Madison was ready to do everything to stay in London, but nothing worked. She supposed to work with the man she hated, and he hated her too. Besides he was her new boss.
Looking for a good read, I found this novel on NetGalley. I’ve never heard before about Anna Permoli. From the first page, I’ve listed this book in my favorite and the author in my favorite authors ever. Why? Because it made me laugh so much, it was an interesting story about two people who hated each other and then…
Reading this book was so much fun because I constantly have guessed what would happen and when romance would come. The story surprised me keeping me attached to the end.
Madison is hilarious and absorbing. I enjoy reading her abroad adventure. All she did was funny she went from one to another mistake. I hate Mark at first but turning pages I started to like him and understood him, his fears.
I had high hopes for this, thinking the South Korean setting would make for a different chicklit experience. Regrettably, I found Maddison really annoying and immature. There's a good story in here and a good editor should have toned her down a bit. I did not finish. THanks to netgalley for the ARC.
The travel aspect and the idea of relocating to a new country definitely appealed to me although certainly not to Maddison! I'm guessing I won't get the chance to travel to Seoul, South Korea so I was looking forward to seeing the place through Maddison's eyes. The descriptions of the country were great and I loved finding out about all the different traditions.
I liked the idea that first impressions can be damaging with Maddison and Mark showing this perfectly. Their first meeting does not go to plan and this sets the story up brilliantly. You can tell right away that sparks are going to fly between them. So I knew I would enjoy their feisty interactions especially with them having to work together closely. I have to admit that I am probably a little bit like Maddison in some respects. Especially as she has made a habit of blending into the background and finds the idea of leading people daunting. That would definitely be me! As the book progresses Maddison definitely grows as a character and I did become more attached to her. At times Mark could be a little infuriating but again as his personality begins to come through I ended up forgiving him for the most part at least.
I loved all the scrapes that Maddison and Mark were involved in and I couldn't wait to see how everything would turn out. Will Maddison and Mark ever learn to get along?
If you are looking for something that will leave you smiling then this book is ideal.
You Drive Me Crazy is a light and easy going story with two fun and interesting characters!
Four stars from me!
Many thanks to Aria Fiction & Netgalley for my copy. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.
Maddison has had her fingers and toes crossed for transfer day, for what seems like ages. She has her heart set on FINALLY being able to go to New York for work and EVERYONE is routing for her to get her break. I'm guessing you can imagine her face when Mr. Boss Man calls her into his office to tell her that she IS transferring to a different country, just not the one she wanted. After all, going to South Korea for a year and working with a boss who acts like he would prefer it if she wasn't there, it sounds fiiiiiiiine; right?
Maddison doesn't seem to think so!
You Drive Me Crazy was scheduled in my diary for today (obviously), but as I'm a fast reader and I looked at my diary last week, I had the choice of reading this book or picking something completely different as I really needed a light-hearted, pick me up style read. So I went with this one as it intrigued me the most, especially as I had never ventured to South Korea via a book before.
The storyline wasn't jam-packed with information, yet it contained just enough to keep boredom at bay. For me, the beautiful thing about the storyline was that it was simple and didn't require me to overexert my brain cells whilst reading it. I didn't need to think, I didn't need to decipher any hidden agendas; all I needed to do was put my feet up and read, at my own leisure. Bliss.
As for the characters, they most certainly were a mixed bunch! Personalities were brought together which, in any other situation, probably wouldn't have gotten on well, but it worked. A couple of them leaned more towards having a bizarre personality, don't get me wrong, but they were fun and most certainly unique. It made a change to read such diverse characters who are so full of life, as opposed to the samey sort of characters that pop up frequently.
I LOVED visiting Korea via book form as I have never been before, so I have no idea how close the authors descriptions of the country were to the real thing. I'm hoping very close as Anna Premoli's descriptions were incredibly vivid.
Overall, You Drive Me Crazy was rather fun to read. Ok, no, it didn't blow me away as such or shock me in any way, but, it didn't really need to do those things either. I was able to just lose myself in the book, without having to have my emotions or reactions on high alert. A joy to read, You Drive Me Crazy was just the book I needed to stop me from driving myself crazy.
My Rating:
3.5 Stars
Favorite Quotes:
‘It must be fun to come from a mixed race family. Unfortunately, I come from a very ordinary family.’ The only one with any pedigree worth speaking of is the cat.
Everybody I encounter turns to look at me: I suppose being a blonde girl might be an attraction in this city. A bit like being a B-list celebrity.
For some reason I feel like a cow on display at a cattle fair. I am afraid that someone will end up asking me to show them my teeth.
My Review:
Maddison was an awkward, quirky, outspoken, and feisty main character, but she was also an immature and self-involved drama queen that spent a considerable amount of print whining and snarkily moaning about nearly everything, or what my British friends call whinging. While her whinging and observations were often amusing, the sheer volume and nastiness of her snark became rather tedious. Maddison certainly had not wanted to be sent to Korea for a yearlong project, a country she knew nothing about and could not even locate on a map. She seemed determined to find the customs and food to be an inconvenience and everything about her handsome new boss, Mark, to be disagreeable. In her fatigue and unhappiness, she often came across as vacuous, cranky, snide, and easily agitated. While I enjoyed the clever humor, the constant conflict and her abrasive and selfish rants became increasingly tiresome. I craved more balance to the story and wished there had been half the angst and significantly more sweet chapters like the last one instead.
Maddison has drifted through life never really sure of what she wants to do so when she is offered a transfer in her job as an investment banker she jumps at the chance thinking that it will be in the shopping capital of the world New York......how unfair can life be when she is instead sent to South Korea!
Maddison's new boss Mark Kim doesn't help matters...she hates him.....and he certainly doesn't go out of his way to help her settle in in this totally alien country - she is going to have to grow up fast if she is going to survive!
This book was made by its descriptions of South Korea, the lifestyle and the food etc worth reading just for that, although I did find Maddison's character a bit annoying I generally enjoyed the book
This book was adorable. Maddison was hilarious, when she was thinking thoughts in her head, they were lol moments. Her love hate relationship with her boss Mark or Mr. Kim was funny, and frustrating. I kind of wished they would have gotten together earlier in book, but I did appreciate that they did not just jump in to bed, instead got to know each other first, even though they barely liked each other. It was also fun to read about her job, and the coworkers that she eventually not only got to appreciate but ended up liking. Mark's grandmother and brother were also good characters to add to the story. Thoroughly enjoyed, am sure you will too!
My first book by this author but I won't be in a hurry to read another.
I found the characters really boring & difficult to connect to
There's something oddly charming about Maddison and Mark's hate/hate relationship - maybe the chemistry between them that screams at you from the page, promising great things in chapters to come. I loved the fact that the book was set in South Korea - I always enjoy unusual locations, as it adds a special interest to the story, and the little tips and hints about Korean culture and customs made for a great addition to the romance. What I really would have loved though, is a few chapters from Mark's point of view. I felt like there was a little something missing without his side of the story.
As anyone that follows my reviews, may probably know by now, I absolutely love being able to travel with fiction to new and exotic settings. So when I spotted You Drive Me Crazy on Netgalley, and the blurb mentions South Korea, I gave it a whole seconds thought before requesting the book, as its not a country I've ever visited in fiction or real life.
My conviction of picking this book definitely wasn't wrong, I really enjoyed You Drive Me Crazy, even if at times Maddison really did drive me a bit bonkers with her inability to embrace change, or even this new adventure she was going on.
Maddison is the sort of girl who is cruising through life, doesn't know if she even likes the job that her mum told her she should qualify for, seems uninterested in much apart from shopping and possibly finding a rich husband. She thinks that one day she will work out what she wants from life but is too scared to try anything new and likes her routines. She only agreed to a foreign year abroad at work, as she was under the impression should be able to get a transfer to the shopping capital of the world, New York.
Having explained a bit about Maddison's personality you may be able to sympathise when she learns that its actually Seoul, South Korea that she will be transferred to, and the man she will be working under, seems to have taken an instant dislike to her. Not only that Maddison isn't really convinced about the possibility of even more responsibility at work too, being responsible for her own team.
What I loved were Mark's attempts to show Seoul to Maddie, really taking her under his wing, and playing an informative tour guide role. Thanks to Mark I know a lot about how the city is separated, how the subway system works, been treated to tours of some gorgeous palaces, taken to a traditional South Korean hotel, and given all sorts of tidbits about customs of the country.
I did though agree with Maddie's thoughts on South Korean food, as a non adventurous eater myself, I feel I may have struggled as much as she did initially.
I absolutely loved being a reader of this book, as it meant I was always aware of the underlying tension between Maddison and Mark, even if they seemed oblivious to it.
Written in the first person, after a few chapters I really started to enjoy You Drive Me Crazy, and the writing style of Anna Premoli. It is a story of one woman's huge opportunity for personal growth, and seeing how she responds. I found myself gutted that I had to put the book down and go to bed after my first stint of reading, and my dreams that night were definitely based around South Korea, which shows how much the book was really affecting me,
Thank you so much to Aria and Netgalley for this copy of the book which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
This was a funny and quick read that was perfect for me. It's very engaging and enjoyable, after the first chapter it just makes me want to read more. I like the story and the main character, Maddison Johnson. She is very strong and funny. A romance story that is different from any I've read before. This book makes my day a little bit brighter!
I was given this book by NetGalley.
Anna Premoli is very good at character development - in this case, we have a main character, Maddison, who has some personality traits that make it hard at times to like her. She is a mess - she doesn't understand her job and does as little as she can so she doesn't screw up (but has no problem covering up a mistake and hoping for the best.) In the way of HR departments, when she applies for an international transfer to New York (for the shopping), she ends up with a transfer to Seoul, Korea. She is appalled, but doesn't turn it down. She doesn't bother to learn anything about Korean culture, and her obliviousness nearly drove me mad.
The book is funny (sometimes uncomfortably so because the humor is in her obviously lack of finesse regarding cultural differences) and in the end, Maddison grows up, both personally and professionally.
Its about an English woman who fallen in love with a Korean-American guy. It's a fascinating and I'm quite love it though I have to admit Maddison is such an annoying women, very stubborn and same goes to Mark, a charming guy, with an attitude that's hard to understand and both of them, somehow, has down to chaotic because of they hardly want to accept that they both love each other.
Both of the character in this novel has definitely annoy me to the max, that I just want to scream to the both of them, luckily, Seung Hee has made it to say what they know. Hence, the ending was what I want it to be and I'm satisfied over it.
I think the author has make a great job, because, she has made me want to glue to her novel, to know what, how, why, when, all of it. Thank you for making a great writing! This is my first time reading Anna Premoli's writing and I quite amazed of her writing.
