Overall I did enjoy this novel about two highly dysfunctional sisters ... but the characters became really frustrating as they had such a toxic relationship!
There is a great deal of drama and it's an easy read - but definitely not the most likeable or relatable of characters!
Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.
This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.
Loved the story and the tense and dysfunctional relationship between the sisters. The twisted, layered and complicated familial bond was written to perfection by Petrou. A thoroughly enjoyable domestic thriller.
Sister of Mine had a truly sinister undertone throughout the novel. The twists kept me interested and I was very impressed by the continued sense of unease and the tension created.
Well this book certainly covered a lot of issues - murder, arson, love triangle, surrogacy and abusive relationships, but mainly the pull of sisterly love and what they will do for each other, even if it eats away at them for the rest of their lives. This is quite a quick read and although parts were a bit slow and repetitive it did keep my interest. Of course there was a twist but I wasn’t really looking for one as I didn’t really see it as that type of book so it was a bit of a surprise. Overall the characters were likeable and the ending was satisfying. Thank you to NetGalley and Oldcastle Books for letting me read and review this book.
Sisters and secrets go hand in hand. Everyone knows thAt is a given. But when the secrets are earth shattering and beyond dark where do you go from there?
After their mother dies in a tragic accident and their father walks out on the family Penny becomes Hatties caregiver. With that responsibility comes dysfunction and complications.
This is a quick engaging well written read that you won’t be able to put down until you turn the last page. With tension this domestic suspense grips you and takes you along for a bumpy ride as you learn what Penny & Hattie have going on.
Thank you to the publisher, author, and Netgalley for the gifted review copy. All opinions are my own.
I enjoyed this thriller story, the twists and turns of the plot kept me hooked until the end. I hadn’t read anything by this author before but will now.
Many thanks to netgalley and Laurie Petrou for the advanced copy of this book. I agreed to give my unbiased opinion voluntarily.
There's a huge amount of claustrophobia in the narrative and this makes for some slightly creepy reading at times. It's highly gripping and there are a few twists, especially towards the end. I'm looking forward to reading more from the author in the future.
"Sisters, like secrets, are best kept close."
Sisters Penny and Hattie have been extremely close since childhood. So close that they even share a deep dark secret that they can't escape from. Will this secret be the one thing that finally tears them apart?
A story of 2 sisters and a secret. One sister is good and is bad. It starts off as it continues.....really good! I’ll be looking for more books by this author because the story is well-written with a good plot and likeable and believable characters.
4/5 on goodreads.
This is the story of the Grayson sisters, and they are troubled. Hattie and Penny, bound together by history and secrets. This is an involving and twisty thriller with a gripping and unexpected ending. I very much enjoyed this debut novel and shall be keeping a sharp eye out for her future work.
Sleepy towns have creepy stories to tell. Two sisters with an unusual relationship share a secret which, if revealed, will be devastating. Will the truth come out?
Well written, the story is interesting and well build.
Loved it....
The relationship between the two sisters is totally twisted but totally fascinating all the same, they have a very codependent relationship and it’s not healthy ata lol.
Kept you guessing from the start and even at the end I wasn’t quite sure if what I was reading was the truth!
It was a riveting read in my opinion and I really liked the strong characters in it, wasn’t quite sure who started the fire or who to belive and even now I’m still wondering 😂 brilliantly written novel, hope there is more to come!
Hattie and Penny are sisters who have always been together. They've helped each other through some traumatic experiences but is there more to them then it seems. The town certainly seems to think so. Penny's husband dies in a fire but was it just an accident? This family is full of lies that are set to crash and burn around them.
This was an interesting read. The dynamic between the sisters is fascinating and quite twisted. The plot itself was good but I had figured out the truth of the fire. The story is told by Penny and at times i liked her but much of the time i found her and Hattie not likeable enough to be really invested in their story. The ending however did fit the story well.
After reading this book I’m still uncertain if I enjoyed it or not. I struggled to relate and empathises with any character. The mystery was clearly there but I worked it out early on and so I think that’s what makes or breaks this book. If it remains a mystery it’s a great page turner. For me I felt as though I’d read something similar enough to guess what was happening and what the plot twists were leading to.
The concept and story is appealing certainly and the writing kept the pace.
A deeply twisted story that kept me guessing right until the final page, in fairness even then I wasn’t sure who was in prison! Loved the book and will definitely look for more from the author
A great book - emotional, thrilling with unexpected twists. I read it in one go and really enjoyed it.
Completely engrossing story of variable but living relationship between secrets with fatal secret always, effectively, iin the background shadowing their lives . Through men, child, and past .. it reminds me of the Poe story 'The Imp of the perverse' where a deep guilt (which we all suffer as humans in primal way) when the abyss bites you back when you look. Ingenious and warm, unputdownable
enjoyed reading this book. good characters and story line. look forward to reading more from this author.
The story of two sisters, Penny and Hattie. All sisters have secrets but none so earth shattering as these two. Having no parents around, the two sisters have always been there for each other, tied together by a complicated and unsettling bond. When Penny marries as an adult, she ends up in an abusive marriage. When her husband tragically dies in a fire, she has no option but to go home back to her sister Hattie. Sometime later, a man comes into their lives, one who both of them has feelings for. As their feelings grow, they begin to resent each other and an ugly sibling rivalry rears its head threatening to expose the secret they have kept for years.
This was a relatively short read at 256 pages. The story began with a slower pace, setting the scene and giving the whole story an uneasy atmosphere. Most sibling relationships are easy to understand, but the relationship between Penny and Hattie is dark, complex and complicated. Whilst not typically a crime thriller, this book is filled with tension and suspense from the first chapter, which slowly builds as the story moves on. The crime however isn’t the main plot of the book, with the sisters’ relationship taking precedent over everything else. Neither sister comes across as particularly likeable and whilst I couldn’t even side with one over the other, I did have more empathy towards Penny purely because of the abuse she suffered whilst she was married.
It was obvious from the very start that things wouldn’t end well for the two sisters, and throughout the book it’s always in your mind wondering when things are going to start going wrong and how it’s going to happen. It’s certainly a nail biter of a read with a few twists which will surprise you and keep you thinking towards the end. A dark, domestic thriller which left me thankful that my relationship with my own sister is relatively normal! A well written and compelling story that will keep you reading into the early hours.
