I had heard great things about The Promised Neverland before I picked up this first volume and I was not disappointed. The premise is intriguing and the execution is flawless. The story follows Emma, Norman, and Ray, three children living in an orphanage called Grace Field House. They have lived a seemingly perfect life under the care of their "Mom," but everything changes when they discover the dark truth of the outside world they are forbidden to see.
The plot is fast-paced and full of twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. The characters are well-developed and their relationships with each other feel genuine. The artwork is also top-notch, with detailed and expressive character designs and beautiful backgrounds.
Overall, I highly recommend The Promised Neverland to anyone who enjoys mystery and horror manga. The first volume is a great introduction to the series and leaves you wanting more. I can't wait to see where the story goes next.
This was a perfect freaky crazy WTF read. Based on the cover and the words Neverland I went in thinking it would be some type of Peter Pan retelling. And in only the loosest way could it be considered that. Instead it’s about a group of orphans who find out that there’s more to the orphanage than child care. To say anymore gives away the story and I’m not going to do that. You have to read this and go in as blind as possible because it is amazing. There is an anime that was done based off this book as well that’s available on one of the streaming platforms but read the book 1st.
This is a dark story. I wasn't sure I would enjoy this or not. The concept is so captivating it keeps you reading from the edge of your seat. I love the deep thought and strategic planning these children are working through and coming up with. With so much of the story still shrouded in mystery I can't say to much about this volume as I would hate to spoil anything for anyone. This series has an anime adaptation already on season 2. This reads nicely and makes for an even better show. The characters and story keep you sucked in and wanting more.

Quick review for a quick read. I knew exactly what I was getting into with this manga having heard (albeit loosely) about the anime series of the same name and seeing parts of it. "The Promised Neverland, Volume 1" is the first that I've actually sat down and read the series from the very beginning, though. I'm very happy and fortunate to have received it as a galley.
We meet the happy go lucky kids of an orphanage who are of various ages and backgrounds, all raised by their "Mom" within an environment separate from the outside world. The kids seem happy - they're well fed, play and do chores, and some are even adopted out after a certain time and certain age. Yet, we quickly learn details about things that don't add up in this picture perfect scenario. Three of the school's high achieving kids - Emma, Norman, and Ray - make a discovery that upends their perception of the happy life they've come to know, and their true purpose at the orphanage. Then begins a time-limited crunch to find a way to escape, if they can manage to do so and not draw any suspicions in the process.
It's a strong start to the series in this volume, not just in showcasing the personalities of the characters and their unique strengths, but also providing a combination of dread and determination in the unique environment here. I liked the steady worldbuilding and could follow the deductions of the characters as they begin to question the relationships around them and the situations as they unfold. Granted, even the authority figures in this story appear to have stakes/something to lose, so that adds to the overarching story down to the final page.
I definitely plan on continuing the series from this point, but I would recommend "The Promised Neverland" for those who want a good look at a horror/suspense/fantasy story that takes you by surprise with it steadily building eerie storyline and nice focus on characterization.
Overall score: 4/5 stars.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Everyone seems to love this one, but it unfortunately fell very, VERY flat for me. Both the writing and the art styles were very convoluted and messy. That's all I could think about for the entirety of the book, and sadly, I couldn't wait for it to be over. The premise is really intriguing, but I don't think I'll be continuing with the rest of the series at this time.
Wow!! This was so good! The story really took a turn that I was not expecting but I am here for it! The art is stunning as well. Can’t wait for the next volume!!
Very excited to dive into volume 1 of this series after binging the first season of the anime last Halloween. It is an excellent story, full of twists and turns, with intelligent protagonists and, at times, even more intelligent villains.
The art work is evocative and detailed, bringing to life this psychological story of children attempting to escape the orphanage they were raised in. What I love about this series especially is that it really lets there be weight to characters' decisions and the situation they find themselves in.
An absolute must read for anyone interested in psychological horror or just very very good storytelling.
I had been looking for the next manga series to dive into and this was perfect! Such an intriguing story. I love how on one hand it is sweet and innocent, featuring little children and a doting caregiver, but then gets extremely dark and ominous. The art also is very well done.
Gorgeous manga for kids and adults that will convince even the most reluctant of readers to get stuck in! They won't even realise they're reading. I thought it was going to be a spin-off of Peter Pan and the lost boys but it was so original, fresh and engaging! Loved it!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me access an advance digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Based on the title I expected a graphic novel very similar to the Peter Pan, that was not what I got at all. That story presented was compelling and original. I will be picking up the other books in the series as soon as I can.
This was an interesting read. I enjoyed the plot and characters and sparked my interest in watching the anime.
This was NOT at all what I was expecting from this manga. But boy was it so much better than I could have expected. I was pleasantly surprised. I haven’t yet been able to continue reading the next volumes. But I absolutely want to.
This was the first Manga that ive ever read and i was really excited to read it as i had heard so many good things about the series that when i saw this on here i knew i had to jump at the chnace to read it. I wasnt surprised when it turned out that i loved this book so much. I loved that the characters were children een though while reading they seemed much older then what they acctually were. I really enjoyed the mystery aspect of the book and how the reader got to play detective with the children and try and figure out what wad going on.
I didn't get to finish before it was archived and I can't wait to get a copy in order to finish. I really enjoyed what I was able to read.
This manga was totally not what I expected at all but it was actually better? This is a creepy mysterious manga that follows a group of children who live in an orphanage and have never seen the outside world. When they turn 12 they leave the orphanage, thinking that they will be joining a foster family but this might not be the truth...This was a clever and intriguing volume filled with unexpected revelations, I can't wait to read the rest.
Absolutely amazing! Just one volume, and I’m already obsessed. I’ve checked out more volumes from my library and I fully intend on reading the entire series. It’s just so enrapturing and I love the main characters. Amazing start to a series that I have very high expectations for.
Nice artwork, messed up story (in a good way!). The kids at Grace Field House orphanage want for nothing- they have good food, a nice place to live, they're clothed well, schooled, taken care of by a kind caregiver they call "Mom," and have only one rule: stay away from the gate. Now doesn't that sound like a great set-up for all hell breaking loose? Two of the orphans find out all is not as it seems at Grace Field House, and a sinister plot is revealed......

'The Promised Neverland, Vol. 1' by Kaiu Shirai with art by Posuka Demizu is a manga about a group of children living in what seems to be an idyllic setting.
Emma and her fellow orphans live in Grace Field House which is run by a woman they call Mom. They are well fed, and tested. They can play in the forest, but they are forbidden from going near the gate. One night, Emma and her friends go near the gate and find out the horrible truth about their existence. Now they have to find a way to escape.
I really liked the set up and everything up to the kids finding things out. After that, the pacing just kind of got stuck for me. The planning to escape was endless and they hadn't even left by the end. The art is quite good and I liked the style.
I received a review copy of this manga from VIZ Media and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this manga.
I wouldn't call this a Peter Pan retelling but more of a Peter Pan inspired story. This takes a dark and intriguing twist that keeps you on wanting to know more. The prison escape story clouded in unknowns will lead you feeling frustrated right alongside the characters as they face increasing obstacles. Not necessarily a horror but definitely gives a creepy feel that you'll love. Great story to get sucked into.
I will be complete honest. I did not realize what this was when I started to read it. My mind for some reason did not register the fact it is a horror manga. Because of that my review might be a bit different. I am not a lover of horror. I did though find the story interesting, but because of my preferences I will not be getting the rest of these.
But if you are into horror and like manga i suggest picking this series up.
