This was a cute, lovely, sweet and inclusive christmassy romcom, with a charming lead and a memorable cast of characters. It was a little schmaltzy for me, but that's just my personal taste, and it's a Christmas romance, so it suits! I loved it; I love this author and I can't wait to see what she does next under this name, if anything.
This was so much fun to read! A Christmas romance set in a department store with a colourful cast of characters and an upbeat vibe.
Shell Smith works at the make up counter at a renowned department store, she loves her job, her quirky friends and her big loud family. As more and more opportunities knock on her door, she realises her worth and learns to open her heart for the right person.
I thought this was sweet, funny and gave me all the Christmas season feelings.
What a lovely festive treat! I was getting serious 'Are you being served' vibes at the beginning, then it was brought into the present day and it was just lovely. I thought the characters were great and loved the RuPaul drag race mentions. I really wish Duke and Sons were real. Can't wait to read more from this author!
Festive, Nostalgic Romcom....
A warm and fuzzy festive romcom. A likeable protagonist, a colourful cast of supporting characters, filled with nostalgia and a big dollop of romance. Ideal escapism for the Christmas period or, indeed, anytime at all.
When I started this book I had visions of an old - fashioned department store in the vein of Are You Being Served with young Mr Grace leading the team at Grace Brothers. There were no cries of "I'm free" and certainly no mention of Mrs Slocombe's pussy....
Instead this a a story centred around Shell, who works on one of the makeup counters where she is very talented and successful. Things become a bit fraught when the owner, Old Mr Duke, introduces his grandson Callum, who is being groomed to take over the business. The two strike up a friendship, but things become complicated when an old friend of Shell's, Nick, that she always had a crush on shows up again.
A cosy read where the outcome isn't clear, full of great characters (I loved Ricky, really colourful) and is just the type of book that is made into one of the Hallmark Christmas movies that I enjoy at any time of the year.
I loved this book, it's a proper festive treat. It has everything you'd want from a Christmassy read - great characters, a lovely plot and the most perfect of settings. Duke & Sons department store is a character in its own right, I really felt like I was standing in its halls along with the characters. This is a warm, cosy, joyful treat of a read, I'm going to be giving it a second read in December for sure!
Here we have a small town with an old-fashioned department store.
As we are all too aware these days, department stores are struggling and they need everything they can offer to help them make it into the next few years of consumer choice- adding to the experience of shopping seems to be the way forward.
I only use a department store myself for 2 things: 1. A personal shopper – for which they don’t charge; and 2. An occasional quick facial – for which I usually pay £15 and then I purchase – often – some new item. But I never get the money I paid back in purchases! But then nearly every shop assistant in these beauty brands gets a bonus on sales so…
This store is very old fashioned in that people are salaried without bonuses on sales – except that the more funky make-up brands begin to offer their sales assistants interesting prizes if they do well. Take a look at the Gucci pink Marmont bag!
I do like to look at the funky brands myself – a cabinet full of items just for eyebrows for instance. And lots of new products. Always coming out. The beauty department is where I gravitate! To it makes sense that this store should use it to help bring itself into a new age.
A sweet romance in the trope .
I absolutely loved the blurb for this story and I really wasn’t disappointed, it’s everything I was hoping for and more. It was full of festive atmosphere, great characters and relationships, the right amount of drama, indecision/hard choices for the MC and of course romance. It’s just a wonderful Christmas read that will leave you feeling happier than when you started, reaching out for the cocoa and wanting to put on a Christmas movie. Perfection
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion
Shell works in Duke & Sons department store and seems very happy in her job. But changes are happening as Old Mr Duke is retiring and his grandson is taking over. Also, her old friend Nick is back in town, so does she have her chance with him now?
A great festive read
Loved the characters and loved the setting, I want more to come as I didn't want this to end. I hope we get a follow up to this.
I kept thinking about Oxford Street in London at Christmas, it reminded me of my childhood to growing up and the wonder of London.
Very well written with plenty of detail, what a delightful book to read. This is well worth the 5 stars that I am giving.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A heartwarming, engrossing and highly enjoyable Christmas story that made me smile and root for the characters.
I liked the plot, the festive atmosphere and the fleshed out characters.
It's the first book I read by this author and won't surely be the last.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
I finished Someday at Christmas by
@lizzie_byron
yesterday and it's just the most delicious book. Warm, funny, sexy, gorgeous setting and characters. I loved it so much. (Also it should totally be a film.)
I loved this Christmas story! Perfect plot and characters to keep you coming back for more. Perfect for the upcoming festive season!
There’s a quote in this book, which to me, perfectly sums it up : “The joy isn’t in predicting the happy ending. It’s in knowing that it’s coming”
This is a lovely story about finding love at Christmas time. While slightly predictable, the feel-good factor is just perfect for a Christmas tale.
The imagery in the book is wonderful. I find myself wanting desperately to do my Christmas shopping at a place as magical as Duke & Sons - to see the beautiful Christmas decorations, and meeting Santa, or to take part in Christmas carols in their annual White Christmas. It sounds idyllic.
This was a feel-good read that has me eagerly anticipating Christmas and the joy it brings.
As much as enjoyed getting to know Shell and Callum, for me the real start of this book is Dukes and Son, the department store.
I really cared about the store and all of its employees futures, and loved hearing about all of Callum's new bright ideas.
The new Christmas decorations are stunning and sounded like what you may expect to see on Oxford Street, London, and not ins Osterley.
Shell and Ricky are fabulous larger than life characters that had me really hooked on seeing what may happen to them.
There is a lot to love about this book and if you are someone who enjoys a book set at Christmas, but doesn't want to star reading them too early - I will say this didn't give me great big festive feels but it was still most definitely worth of having Christmas in the title.
This was my first book from the author, and I'm certain it won't be my last.
Thank you to Netgalley and Hodder & Stoughton for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
I greatly enjoyed this book, thank you for giving me a preview copy. The plot was interesting and fast paced and I sympathised with the characters. This is the first novel I have read by this author but I hope it will not be the last!
Someday at Christmas is a wonderful story based around a department store and the relationships of those who work there.
It centres around Shell who began as a Saturday girl and years later runs a make up stand in the store. We see her friendships and relationships develop throughout the book. While it may be predictable at points, it doesn’t distract from the warm cosy Christmassy feel you get from reading it.
This was a really enjoyable light read. Great writing style and interesting storyline. It was quite a short romance but all the characters were well written and the story moved at a really nice pace and didn’t get bogged down.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me to read a preview copy of this book
I'll struggle to get into another book after this. I absolutely LOVED it. It combined three my favourite things, chick lit, Christmas and make up. Shell is an amazing character. I just loved her. The chemistry with her and Callum throughout the book is fantastic. I could see the scenes play out in my mind whist I read it. It would be an amazing film (that I'd pick apart and complain that it's not as good as the book).
This is the ultimate festive, feel good book that I would have no hesitation to recommend to anyone.
I really enjoyed this book a lot. The characters were clever and engaging, and getting to spend time with them was a treat. I liked the writing too - it was descriptive without ever veering into flowery territory, and I would certainly be interested in reading more work by this author. The cover is great too!
