This is 3 stories in one book! What a bargain! First we have Hannah who is an adventurous soul who travels miles and lives her best life. She has stopped at home for the longest time and is working for her best friend Jess.
Jess has been married for 20 years and has twin girls, but through building her business she wonders if there is more to life. Jess’s business is struggling when Hannah comes up with the idea of Jess finding her perfect partner through the business which is a dating app.
The whole book is about friends relying on each other and having the faith in being able to rely on each other. Brilliantly written with fab descriptions, lots of humour and real life for the reader to relate to. This book hooked me as much as the Australia version on TV did. However I felt the end wasn’t long enough and although the right pieces were there I felt I could have missed vital points. That being said I loved the book and would recommend.
Thank you for the opportunity to read this lovely, warm, fun story of love and friendship and all that goes with it.
I loved the read up of this book as I've also been watching married at first sight so knew I'd should enjoy this book.
It didn't disappoint the main characters were all really likeable and relatable and throughout I wanted it to work out well for them.
I liked the premise of the story, but as others have mentioned, there was too much build up to the wedding and not enough wedding.
Overall a good read for a bit of escapism. Thank you.
Married at First Swipe is a fun story of a modern-day arranged marriage with a difference and I loved it immediately.
Hannah works for her best friend Jess on her dating app called Save the Date. Jess had got into some financial difficulties and Hannah came up with the hair-brained idea that Jess should find her a husband through the app, and but not meet him until their wedding day. The ultimate blind date! They decided that the exposure in the press and on social media might just save the business.
The first half of the story focuses on the lead up to the wedding. Obviously, I believe in the sanctity of marriage, but this was a fun adventure to follow, a bit of ridiculous light relief.
The second half is more serious as the newlyweds get to know each other. It also looks into the more realistic issues of relationships, including the marriages of Jess, Hannah's parents, and grandparents.
I really enjoyed this. It was well written and all the characters were interesting and far from being perfect.
* I presume the publishers/editors know but there is some editing needed at the end of chapters 10, 11, and 15 as there are some incomplete sentences.
Loved, Loved, Loved it! This is probably one of the easiest book reviews I have written to date.
I actually wanted to read this book again once I had finished it. It may be because the story is set in Manchester (my hometown) but I actually loved all of the main characters.
When I first read the description, I thought it sounded rather farfetched nut having watcher Married at First Sight recently, I thought it may be quite similar… I’m glad to say, it wasn’t! (well apart from marrying strangers obviously!)
Hannah is very much like myself, single, well-travelled and loves being independent, a relationship just had to fit in with future adventures. I’d be more than happy for one of my friends to set me up with someone they’ve found online – well, maybe!
Hannah and Jess work together, in Jess’ back garden ‘office’ for Jess’ online dating business, ‘Save the Date’. STD was struggling financially so an idea popped into Jess’ head to have a STD wedding… a BLIND DATE WEDDING! During this time, Jess’s stress caused strain on her own marriage and family life, I liked that this was part of the book. It made it more ‘real life’ to read about relationship struggles with couples who appear perfect to outsiders.
Toby (The husband-to-be) seems to have more of a hidden depth, has had a heartbreaking past which took him out of the dating game and was urged by his sister to sign up for Save The Date. There was something about his parents which I wasn’t too keen on, I don’t know what it was but I got the vibes that they wanted to shield Toby from further heartache which I understand but I feel that there was more to it.
I really liked the little blog posts that were open letters to the bride and groom to be. I think I’d have been intrigued by it if I’d have come across it in real life too, its no wonder the public got involved!
I think I’ve given enough away without spoiling the whole book so it’s 5 stars from me!
Thank you to Simon & Schuster UK and NetGalley for the ARC.
This book was marketed as a romantic comedy, ideal for fans of Mhairi McFarlane. This grabbed my attention and I was pleased to receive an advanced copy.
I’m not entirely sure the comparison to Mhairi was justified. Her writing style is engaging, and pulls you in from the first pages...I didn’t get that pull with this book.
I struggled to warm to the characters, and although I liked G-ma’s character, the name g-ma began to irritate me as the book progressed.
I liked the premise of the story, but as others have mentioned, there was too much build up to the wedding and not enough wedding!
I will look out for future books by this author as I think there’s something there. But this book didn’t really do it for me.
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for my advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review 📚
Hannah works with her best friend, Jess, in a dating app. Her dating life has disappointed her, she is ready to have a serious relationship and get married.
While the app has financial problems she comes up with a idea to both help the app by gaining more subscribers and her dating life.
Her friend Jess will find her next date which will also be the man she will marry. She won't get to know who he is until the wedding. It will be a first date wedding. The only way of communication with him will be through the app's blog.
I like the idea of a modern day marriage of convenience a lot. It was a fun way to have two people decide to marry each other.
The beginning of the story was interesting. I didn't expected to have both Jess and Hannah's pov, I liked it up only until a certain point, they was a lot of information about both of their lives while I was more focused on the wedding and Hannah's life. I would love to see more of Toby and the actual wedding and the first meeting, as well as more of the aftermath of their marriage.
*I received an ARC from the publisher through Netgalley.
Married at First Swipe is a heartwarming, emotional and often hilarious read that explores the ups and downs of a relationship when combined with societies love for modern technology. It's a real feel-good read that leaves you smiling.
Thank you netgalley and The publisher for giving me this arc copy.
I really wanted this book to be a good one that would give me this swoon feeling and butterflies. It almost did but it fell flat at some point. I just kept saying more to my self because I wanted more something to take this book from good to great. I wanted more drama, more lust , more something. I liked it but I didn’t particularly love it. It was a good read for me.
I loved the concept of this and the fact it was compared to Helly Acton and Mhairi McFarlane. I am always so keen to have a rom-com where I can snuggle in my blanket and escape.
For me this fell a little too short and things needed to be fleshed out a lot more, although it was interesting and refreshing to look at problems in marriage whether you’ve been together years or when you’ve never met your husband. It’s not often authors speak about the troubles in relationships, so I welcomed this.
I would have liked to of had more Toby and Hannah – was frustrated when we got skipped to the morning after their big wedding day. Surely this was what the whole book was supposed to be about? I wanted reaction, I wanted drama, I wanted lust – you get what I mean.
I was not expecting to have so much of Jess’ point of view. I do understand what the author was trying to do here, but I just wasn’t sure. In all honesty I think this was trying to do too many things at once, I think it needed to be stripped back and focused on Hannah and Toby and how they overcome this unusual and weird situation. Maybe we should have had two books? One focusing solely on Jess, the business, and her troubles with Tom and one focusing on Hannah and Toby. I also wanted more of G-ma! She was brilliant.
Overall this was a quick and light read, does exactly what it says on the tin. I laughed a lot, - this was genuinely at times so funny, but also felt like we got a little of everything rather than one solid plotline.
Thanks for Simon and Schuster for ARC!
Thanks to Simon and Schuster UK, Netgalley and Claire Frost for providing me with the ARC.
I'm sorry to report that I struggled with this storyline.
This follows a year in the life of Jess happily married and friend Hannah.
Hannah wants to settle down and meets her husband at the altar.
Told in chapters in the POV from Jess and Hannah.
I found this a little hard to read as not much happened until the wedding, for me it wasn't gripping enough and didn't keep my attention I kept reading a chapter putting it down and going back to try again, it took about 3 weeks to complete.
Maybe other readers might enjoy this one but unfortunately this was not for me
If I'm honest, I found this story a bit unrealistic. Does anyone really really want to marry someone that they have never met?
It just isnt my sort of book, but I can imagine it being very popular.
Thans for a chance to read and review it.
Married at First Swipe focuses on a year in the life of two best friends - Hannah and Jess - switching between their perspectives to discuss a course of events. Jess is the head honcho of 'Save the Date', a wedding app that aims to find marriage partners for people as opposed to one night stand, and in an attempt to increase subscriptions and save the business from financial difficulty, her best mate Hannah agrees to marry a man from the app without ever having met him. It's basically the concept of many MANY reality TV shows (like Married at First Sight, and Love is Blind), but with a lot less punch and drama. I felt as though the pacing is too slow, and there's no real drama or action other than the main 'we-got-married-without-meeting-each-other-beforehand' plotline, and instead there's a bunch of additional dialogue and circumstances that don't really aid the narrative.
I can see why the author chose to do dual perspectives - one from Jess who's married to her childhood sweetheart, and one from Hannah who's experiencing the trial and tribulations of a new marriage - but it didn't feel cohesive or that it meshed that well together. I really found myself having to push through pages rather than enjoying the story.
I loved this book! For me this book was up there similar to a Mhairi McFarlane which is as high as a compliment I can give!
Thanks to Simon Schuster UK and Netgalley for an early review copy of this book.
What can I say? It's funny, romantic, emotional and a perfect escapist read for these weird times we're living in. I loved the almost sisterly relationship between Hannah and Jess, they were great main characters.
I thought the blog posts were an interesting way to find out more about Hannah and Toby, it worked really well. (Also Tom's nickname being Tank -LOL!!!!!)
A perfect read for laugh out comedy and relaxing, I'll definitely be recommending this to others.
Described as perfect for fans of Helly Acton and Mhairi McFarlane (which I am) and loosely based on one of my favourite TV shows 'Married at First Sight' I couldn't wait to read this. Sadly though I was left disappointed as it wasn't anywhere near as funny as 'The Shelf' or 'If I Never Met You' or as dramatic as the show.
The big problem for me was that this focused way too much on the pre-wedding and not enough on the wedding or marriage. I wanted more of their first impressions of each other, more of what happened on the honeymoon, more dates, more getting to know each other, more Toby - just more of everything really. I also wanted more from the epilogue - which was too soon after the end of the story to see how things worked, particularly for Jess who wasn't even given an update.
The other problem was main character Hannah - who I found slightly annoying and totally selfish. Any problems were Toby or Jess' fault and never hers although thankfully G-ma (who I did like) eventually talked sense into her.
Maybe this tried to be too many things with the blind -date-wedding, Jess' own marital problems and the perilous state of Save The Date business - which really could have provided so much comedic fodder but didn't.
An easy read but one that ambled along and unfortunately just didn't live up to its potential.
I haven’t given a poor review to any books received through NetGalley yet - but I honestly could not get through this book. I read up to page 60 and started to get exhausted at the amount of characters introduced that didn’t appear to have a role other than to show the main character was sociable. There appeared to have been no significant reason for the main character to participate or even come up with a crazy idea to marry someone from a dating app - other than for the fact it’s a main TV show (married at first sight). It was honestly just a bit dull - I couldn’t bring myself to finish it. Won’t be posting a review on goodreads.
This was such a cute read. The concept was a little bonkers when you think about it but the way in which it was done was really good.
I liked what it had to say about relationships and how they need work to continue to work year in year out. Jess’s story resonated with me a lot and made me think.
This was pretty good for a breezy summer beach read. Not the most deep or revelatory novel with something new to say, but if you're looking for something chill you could do a lot worse.
Right. I want to get this over with so I never have to think about this book again. Thank you to Netgalley for approving me for this book. I kind of wish you didn't now!
Firstly, this isn't a romance. This isn't cute. This isn't fun. There's no drama. To be honest, nothing much at all happens except what you expect i.e. they get married having never seen each other before. That's basically it. I can't spoil anything about this book because NOTHING ELSE HAPPENS.
Secondly, this book is written like a script. It's full of dialogue. Events and things that happen are glazed over and just referred to 'omg I can't believe you did that on your honeymoon'. Did WHAT? Cos we didn't get to see SHIT. We didn't get to see ANYTHING happen, we were only told it happened after the fact and that is frustrating as hell. When they first saw each other at the church? I was looking forward to hearing their thoughts about each other etc. I thought maybe there'd be some friction, maybe they'd hate each other and it'll be an enemies to lovers situation but NO we glaze over it to the next morning. WHAT?????? Why on God's green earth would you do that?
Thirdly, Hannah (one of the main characters) is a spoiled little brat and I hate her. She jumps down everyone's throat, she sulks and whines when she doesn't get her way (which is never cos she's a brat and always gets her way). She's just annoying and I didn't like her. She also felt like a cardboard cut out.
Nothing about this book was fleshed out, it didn't make me feel anything, I didn't care for the characters at all.
The first 50% of the book was unnecessary and boring. This book SHOULD have started from the wedding and we should have seen things develop from there. But what we got was 200 pages of organising a wedding and having wine and the next 200 pages of just conversations about basically nothing.
Also, what was the point of Jess having chapters? I would've preferred to see Toby's POV.
I can't get the time I've wasted back but I sure as hell can make sure no one else wastes their time with this book.
'Married at First Swipe' centres around Hannah, who is passionate about travelling, grasps every adventure and likes to live life on the edge, and her best friend Jess, who settled down 20 years ago, has two children and is very much a perfectionist.
After the birth of her nephew, Hannah decides it is time to settle back down in Manchester and Jess gives her a job at her company, dating app 'Save The Date'. Hannah yearns for someone to settle down with, and when she discovers that Save The Date is experiencing financial hardships, Hannah comes up with a plan which could solve everyone's problems.
But is meeting a man for the first time at the alter really going to help both, Hannah and Jess?
To begin with I wasn't 100% sure about this book. I thought the premise sounded unrealistic and in all honesty I feared it would be a bit cringe. However, I was drawn in by the modernity of the story line, put aside my preconceived opinions, and gave it a go.
Firstly I believe this is a very early edit as there were some paragraphs which jumped around a bit/a few grammar mistakes, but putting those aside it was a very well written book, with chapters jumping between Hannah and Jess, allowing us have insights into both their lives and hear things from both their views. I was really impressed with how realistic the characters were. Claire Frost really bought them to life and the challenges and hardships they face were really believable and relatable. I found myself warm to both. Hannah and Jess, and wanted happy endings for both of them.
I really enjoyed the themes touched upon in this book and think there are lessons we can all take from the story, such as the work you have to put into long-lasting relationships, how other people's lives are not as always as perfect as they may seem, and the difficulties you may face to keep all the plates spinning in life and that to do that we must take care of ourselves from time to time.
Overall, an easy and warming feel-good read. Many thanks to NetGalley and to Simon & Schuster UK for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a very enjoyable chick-lit adventure. I loved the story-line, the characters and the many moments of laugh out loud humour. This book has left me wanting more and I cannot wait to read about the further adventures of Jess , Tank, Hannah & Toby.
The book was quirky & funny but also dealt with real life issues such as complex relationships, marriages, divorces and friendship
Overall a five star read
