It's difficult to find nonfiction pirate books for children. This book attempt to recreate the DK eyewitness style for readers. Despite having good content, the book was simply not eye catching enough to hold my attention.

Inside Out: Pirate Ship is a fantastic, resourceful, child friendly book about pirates and their vessel - the pirate ship. Any young Pirate fan will love this short 16 page book full of fantastic pictures, facts, information and anecdotes all to do with pirates.
I had great fun reading this and even learn a few things I didn't already know which I always love especially in a children's book!

Always curious about piracy, after so many medias like the manga One Piece or the movie Pirates of the Caribbean who depicted about their life. What was their life like? It is quite fascinating. Would they choose to become a pirate? Why? What is The Jolly Roger? Did they really buried treasures? What did they ate? And all the questions I had all these times were answered.

They even included two female pirates that makes me search for more interesting facts about pirates.

This book is spectacular!
It is very detailed in every aspect of a ship but also the good and bad points of being a pirate. Any kid who wants to know more will certainly appreciate the information as well as the graphics. This book would certainly be one to read in preparation for Talk Like a Pirate Day in September.

Fly Your Pirate Flag

This is a short book, only 8 double-page spreads, but it has a lot of information about what makes up a pirate ship... and actually more information about what it was like to live as a pirate. Because of the length of the book, the book goes wide but not deep. But that's fine, as the author shares so many interesting bits of info. We see different pirate flags of a few famous pirates. A fair amount of time, too, is spent on pirate language; I was surprised to see how many phrases we use in modern times came from the old days of piracy or the origin of pirate terms like buccaneer. A couple of sentences are given about the well-known pirates, famous battles, and pirate ship sinkings. The different types of crew members are discussed. I loved how the drawings showed the different parts of the ship, with arrows pointing to specific points with information given about it right there. I read a fair amount of historical fiction, so it was nice to see the parts of ships that I had only read about. The next time I read a story that features a historical ship, I'll be much better able to visualize it from just the words given! So, as you can tell, this book is fun for adults as well as kids. If there's someone in your family who has an interest in pirates, she or he could find this book a lot of fun.

Beck's fantastic book is reminiscent of the old cross-section books by Biesty. Every page is filled with highly detailed illustrations and snippets of information about pirates, ships, and life at sea. This book will keep readers reading and asking more questions. A must-have for all young knowledge seekers.

While brief, the book offers an overview of the important aspects of the pirate’s life: from useful terminology and information about what ships the pirates have used to interesting anecdotes about well-known pirates.
