Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.
This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.
Everything about this book is soothing calming and relaxing.
It is a very lovely read and has something for everyone and every situation.
A definite must for bedtime reading and a go to read.
The illustrations are stunning.
Loved the affirmations and feel good motivators
Sleep Tight: Illustrated bedtime stories & meditations to soothe you to sleep by Alison Davies is beautifully illustrated and the guided meditations were nicely written. I personally am used to listening to guided meditations and had a difficult time reading the meditations and receiving the same effect. #SleepTight #NetGalley
I wanted to love this book, but alas I only sort of liked it. It wasn’t bad, just didn’t quite work for me. The idea is great: gorgeous illustrations for several scenarios, which then get a guided meditation-style story to put yourself in. Each story has a theme, an aim for how you could feel reading it. Then each scenario has some suggested, linked affirmations to use afterwards, and a ‘Boos your mindset’ follow-on activity (perhaps for use the next morning?).
I’m a big fan of meditation, and soothing guided meditations can be a great way to lull yourself to sleep, I find. However, it didn’t quite work as well in the written form, despite the fact that I do usually read just before bed. It was nice enough to put down the fiction title I’m reading, and do a chapter of this, and yet… hmm, not quite as helpful as I’d hoped.
I did love the pictures illustrating each, and the topics used were perfect – creativity, gratitude, inner peace, balance, etc, and the stories have just the most evocative names, very appropriate to the tone we’re going for: ‘Carousel of Dreams’, ‘Lake of Tranquillity’, ‘Journey to the Moon’. However I found the scenarios themselves a little hit and miss. For example, there’s one about climbing a mountain and achieving all your goals, and I must confess my instant reaction was “Oh, heck no!” Very not relaxing, talking about straining away with exercise! o_O And despite the very on-tone-for-guided meditation, there was something just a tad cheesy about a few of them.
Your mileage may vary, of course, but alas this didn’t quite hit the mark for me.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
Sleep Tight is a book of illustrated bedtime stories and meditations to relax and sooth your mind before bed to try and help you sleep better and easier.
This book has a range of different short bedtime stories for adults with relaxing illustrations and colours on each page. The stories are followed with prompts and activities to do either at night or in the morning.
No expertise or meditation experience is needed to use this book and you do not have to follow it cover to cover you can go to any story you want depending on you and your needs.
I really liked this approach towards promoting mindfulness, meditation and encouraging good sleeping practices. I struggle with sleep in general since becoming a shift worker and I found that this book helped a little with getting a better night sleep. The pictures were stunning and they were probably my favourite part of the book.
I have liked the majority of the guided meditation scenarios mentioned.
Some of them I will adapt for sure during some therapy and mindfulness sessions.
The only thing I cannot have a grasp of is that for true meditation it is recommended to induce the trance in the same way as you reconnect with the present: either through breathing or fixing a certain point around you. The trance induction here and the manner on how you manage to make a shape of the stories and relaxation techniques are rather harsh and very abrupt.
Let’s face it, life can be exhausting. Most times, as adults, we don’t give ourselves the self care we deserve. This book is the foundation of an internal component of self care we need; SLEEP.
So let’s get to the book review:
Off the bat, I was amazed at how beautifully illustrated the book was. Constructed perfectly. The guided meditations were creatively written to allow relaxation for a productive sleep at night while the affirmations induce a positive mindset and inner stregnth. Inner strength that can be used to face any scenarios you might be faced with.
Overall, this is a book that shows ways to have a productive sleep by controlling both your mind and mood. Therefore, I would recommend this book.
Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group –Leaping Hare for the complimentary copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
Sleep isn’t easy for me. I’ve struggled with insomnia for decades. This book helps. It’s guided meditation for all different sorts of things you want to work on (self confidence, anxiety etc) I love the affirmations included to repeat to yourself the next morning to keep the peaceful feeling going the whole day.
I really liked this book, it gives you different ways to calm down and relax. The pictures are beautiful and help with the relaxing feel.
This book is absolutely beautiful and the photos taken doesn’t do it any justice at all. Filled with various visualisation prompts to use during meditation at bedtime, as well as affirmations for the morning, this is a perfect read for anyone looking for a piece of tranquility and zen.
It’s no secret that I struggle with sleep and can sometimes find it very difficult to drift off but I can honestly say that this book has definitely helped me to relax in the evenings. Not always successfully fall to sleep but always to chill and rest my mind.
You don’t need to be any kind of meditation expert to enjoy the benefits of this, and with a various stories for any occasion, you can dip in and out and as often as is personally needed.
An amazing addition for any bedside table!
I picked this title up to read after having a night filled with insomnia. Clearly, Alison Davies wishes something better for me and all of her readers. In this book, she offers ways to calm down and get in the state of mind and body that allows for a restful night. There are several ways that she approaches doing this.
There are a number of stories or guided meditations in this book that invite a reader into a tale in which they take part. The book also includes meditations and a number of suggestions such as a memory box, the use of a crystal and more.
For some readers, some suspension of disbelief may be needed to engage with the stories.. However, if readers take a look, they will know if this is a book for them. I will spend more time with this title tonight!
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title. All opinions are my own.
