I was looking forward to reading this book as I like Kate Humble as a presenter and thought there would be some interesting recipes.

I was a little disappointed that there wasn't anything all that exciting (maybe it is because I have an awful lot of cook books??) I make it a rule that I have to want to make 20 recipes in a cookery book before I am "allowed" to add to my stash, but there were only a couple in here I felt I needed to try.

Nice writing though!

This is a really lovely book, with lots of recipes across each of the seasons.

I liked the way that Kate divided the book into seasons and therefore made use of whatever ingredients were available at a given time.

Lots of lovely things to make and I will definitely be getting a hardback copy as well as the Kindle version.

Also good to read references to the natural world and how to make use of what is freely available. Of course, if picking wild mushrooms you should definitely not do this unless you really know what is okay to eat, but there is an abundance of food out there, some of which I wasn't aware of.

As ever, Kate fills the pages with her own matter-of-fact and friendly voice. She isn't a trained chef and the book is better for that. The recipes are tried and tested - several from friends and family (especially her mum) - and you know they will taste good.

I received an ARC of this book from Octopus Publishing, in return for an honest appraisal.

I really enjoyed this book. It was chatty, funny and full of really good recipes. A great addition to my ever growing cookery book library.

This is a lovely cook book to read. I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style and the narrative in and around the recipes was, for me, the better part of this book.
Recipes are always subjective in my opinion, you like the look of a recipe based on whether you like the ingredients, the method of cooking etc. I have yet to come across a cook book that didn’t have any recipes that I connected with and wanted to try out. And this book was no exception, although there were only a few that were suited to my personal taste.
Overall a beautifully written cook book with recipes for all seasons.
My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this book in return for an honest review.

What a beautiful book it is very readable and Kates down to earth approach encourages me to cook. It is beautifully illustrated. Unlike most cookbooks there are loads of recipes I will make. They are mainly familiar dishes but presented in a different, appealing way.

A really enjoyable read, full of tasty recipe ideas and wonderful photos. Kate Humble shares her recipes across the four seasons. There is a great selection of preserves, drinks, breakfasts, mains, desserts and baking. I’m looking forward to trying her Soda Bread and Beer Bread recipes and the ice cream recipes sound like a real treat too. Thank you to the author, Net Galley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Those familiar with Humble already know of her love for the natural world, and this is reflected in her seasonal cookbook. Using natural, locally sourced meat, fruit and veg, Humble creates delicious recipes based on the seasonality of their availability in Britain. Recipes can easily be converted to American weights, measures and cooking temperatures, although some food items may be a bit more difficult to source

This book has the warmth and soul of Kate Humble shining through it with beautiful homely recipes that I can’t wait to start experimenting with. This is home comfort cooking at its best.

Home Cooked is by the TV presenter Kate Humble. These are ones she cooks herself all the time, having learned them from her family, friends, cuttings or books.

It is divided into 4 main chapters, which are the seasons. However, the recipes don't really match the seasons. Take for example the Mussels cooked in beer during the summer season and rhubarb fool in winter - mussels in the UK are harvested from September to April and rhubarb from April to July. Doesn't match up, which is a little disappointing. I'd expect it to follow the chapters, otherwise what is the point of calling them after the seasons!

Each chapter starts with bread, then covers different breakfasts, main meals then desserts. The book has colour photographs with only some of the recipes. The ingredients are in both imperial and metric and are easy to follow the steps.

Overall it's an okay book nothing special, but seeing as it doesn't really follow the seasons as per the chapter titles, I found it a little disappointing.

I received this book from Netgalley in return for an honest review.

Unfortunately the majority of the recipes didn't appeal to me, but I always enjoy Kate's writing.

Joyful and inspirational! This book feels like a hug! Filled to the brim with mouthwatering recipes using local ingredients, even the ‘naughty’ suggestions feel like healthy treats - Self-Saucing Pudding with Orange and Lemon! I love the anecdotes and stunning photos peppered through the pages, and who knew Wild Garlic Pesto so easily prepared could transform a meal into a rustic feast. I’ve always been a fan of ‘,Scromlette’ - accidentally discovered! Kate’s version is gourmet bliss! Relax, enjoy browsing through the pages, savour the flavours!

Great book, it’s jam packed full of recipes, far more than I initially expected. I can’t wait to try some of them. The photo’s look great alongside the recipes too.

Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.

Home Cooked by Kate Humble is exactly what it says, it’s home cooked fresh food. Kate takes her inspiration from the seasons and has a loving selection of different recipes for each of them. Each recipe has a short introduction about it. There are photos scattered around the book but not for each recipe, I would have liked to have seen more photos but that’s just me.

After an introduction that suitably admits this is a celebrity cookbook not by a cook, but a celebrity, that there Humble lass off the British TV takes us through the year's seasons, and within each one through the day, with some suggestions of eating. A spring breakfast can then be Marmite slathered over a fresh apple, but then again it can be something else, thank you very much. A winter hipflask can be beef consommé with wasted sherry and Bloody Mary – or again, it can be something else.

The dishes are very nice sounding (with exceptions above), and a pleasant mix of the rustic, ooh-aah country shop, honesty box at the end of the farmers' lane, first catch your pig cheeks kind of thing, and a more reasonable supermarket home delivery. Said blend doesn't always work – one eye-catching pasta dish has young hawthorn leaves foraged to be used instead of parsley, married potentially with a tin of crab meat – and any British shopper has sought any actual meat in a tin of crab for years in vain, without needing to spend the earth. Grilled mackerel on a bed of roast rhubarb has a suitable campfire, bonding with nature, feel to it.

Now, a full-on foraging book has yet to cross my path, but this does suggest starting with the idea in ways that lead to decadence – rum with gorseflowers in, etc. This is a book for people confident with getting their hands dirty, either making their own bread, smoking their own salmon, or knowing what are ramsons and what aren't, etc. It's also definitely British, without really saying so – yes, we have a risotto here, labneh there and a shakshuka because it's like law now, or something, but this is generally bringing endemic Britishness to the table, with its farm-based influence, and that's going to be a nice change for some people with their shelves laden with the Mediterranean diet books. You don't get bacon jam in those.

What the book also has is a quite surprisingly low level of lifestyle porn, and any mention in the introductions to the dishes of "my celebrity chef friend suggested this oven for me..." or "my foraging girlfriend knew about this..." can be dismissed quite easily in lieu of the next dish. And with the quantity of recipes, from simple suggestions on commonly-done things up to more expert processes, there is a lot to absorb. No humble effort, then – this should succeed in the marketplace. A surprisingly strong four stars.

Home Cooked by Kate Humble takes us through the seasons with lots of recipes particularly inspired by nature.

A comfort food cookbook with no nonsense seasonal recipes. Divided into seasons and comprises of the dishes that Kate likes to cook and eat. Glorious photos accompany the text, although not for each recipe.

Each recipe starts with the story behind it which adds a delightful personal touch. Most are gathered from friends and family, some with an original twist and few from Kate's travels with a number of spicy offerings which she admits to be partial to. Most of the recipes would be easy to do in a home kitchen with easily obtained ingredients, although I had to look up where to obtain 'curing salt'.

Kate's personality shines through and makes this a cookbook to escape with to the simpler things in life.

This is a beautiful book. It is for anyone who loves, and appreciates, the beauty of books. Both recipes and photos are stunning.

'Home Cooked' is a journey through the seasons celebrating food as it goes. It enables the reader to vicariously experience the country / farming lifestyle through nutritious home cooked food. Peppered with anecdotes throughout, it is just lovely - book to be devoured. The spring time soda bread being a definite hit in my household!

My thanks to Netgalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an advance copy.
