Unfortunately my copy had file issues and I couldn’t finish reading this to review in full, I was enjoying what I read, but unfair to judge the whole book on the bits I read.
This young adult novel was very interesting and quick read. With short chapters, it was hard to put down because, come on, you have time for one more right? The story follows a 17 year old girl named Mischa who is a strong student academically, has lupus and some very protective parents. When Mischa's best friend Bimi starts dating Nate, the adoptive brother of the school's top baseball pitcher, Casey, the groups of friends begin to intertwine and Casey and Mischa begin to notice one another. But this isn't just your typical teen romance where people start quickly coupling up right before prom, there is also a weird undertone. Mischa starts noticing the numbers 7205 appearing all around her and starts having some weird dreams about Casey. The two almost feel pulled towards each other. A weird youth pastor named Dave is also creepily around a lot and has convinced a cheerleader to become slightly obsessed with witches and occults, and then Mischa starts getting into a lot of accidents and near-misses. Could these things all be connected? You'll have to read to find out!
With all of the necessary elements of a good YA, parents who are too involved, instant chemistry between two people who have never talked or connected before, sneaking around and cutting class, important sports and school events etc., Pull will fit right in with other books in this genre. Aside from a strange pill, there is no mention of drugs or alcohol, or sex content other than kissing, making it very appropriate for younger teens. What sets Pull apart from many other teen romance novels is the unusual paranormal-type incidences that grow in frequency and danger as the novel advances. The book also ends with a bit of a cliff-hanger so I am interested to see how the rest of this series will follow!
I would recommend definitely recommend this book to YA readers and people who like suspense without things being too scary! Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this awesome novel!
This was an enjoyable book! Who doesn't love a story that ends with a (possible) murder on prom night?
It's easy to finish a book like this and get frustrated that a lot wasn't explained, but it's not a bad storytelling tactic to leave readers with more questions than answers at the end of a book. I would have liked a little more hand-holding with some of it because I feel a little confused about some of the plot, but since this is supposed to eventually be a series, I'm reserving judgment on that front until I read the rest.
I requested this book based on the synopsis and the mention of a main character with a chronic condition really stood out to me, and I figured that would be a more in-depth plot point. I'm not totally clear on whether or not the main character actually had lupus or if this was just something her parents told her to explain away everything else that was going on with her, and that specifically didn't totally sit well with me.
However, for me that really doesn't take away from my enjoyment of the book overall. The dialogue is believable and the way characters communicate with each other actually reflects how people talk to each other in real life, something that if not done well tends to take me out of the story entirely. I also read through this fairly quickly because it creates the kind of suspense that makes you keep wanting to turn pages. There's so much more I want to know about the characters and I'm looking forward to more!
Review: It’s a slow start, but turns fascinating. It was well written with a good storyline and well developed characters. I loved the relationship between Mischa and Casey which was intense and full of palpable chemisty and the twists and unpredictablility in this book made it worth it. Thank you so much @netgalley for the advanced copy for my honest review.
The title Pull describes the way that the main characters feel - they feel pulled toward each other.
Mischa and Casey go to school together. During their junior year in high school, Casey asks Mischa out. They were drawn to each other before this, but once they start spending time together, they feel the PULL the spend more and more time together and physically feel it when they are separated. (Kind of like the mate bonds they talk about in werewolf books).
I mostly believed their relationship. I certainly felt the chemistry coming off of the pages. I dont usually like the "insta love" books, but I enjoyed this one.
I also like that the story was told from both of thier points of view. Thats my favorite kind of storytelling.
However, there were a few things I didn't like. The parents of both kids obviously knew something mysterious about the relationship. But neither kid really pursues this with their parents. Really? Do you know any teens from today - they would nag until they get an answer.
This is a young adult book, and it pretty much reads like one. Reactions dont seem realistic. Their relationship is awfully pure for teens. That being said, I still enjoyed it.
I want to thank the author, the publisher and #netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this, I need to give this 4 stars since I will probably be reading the next book in the series - I want to see what the mystery is.
I feel a bit like ‘wtf did I just read?’
There’s no explanation, no conclusion or real cliff hanger. Just weird unexplained plot devices that make zero sense.
There’s also a strange emotional disconnect. The characters don’t feel the slightest realistic and I have no connection to them.
I enjoyed the characters in this book and the cover of this book intrigued me, but there was too much ambiguity regarding Mischa's backstory and why everyone in town seemed to know more about her than she did. I don't enjoy supernatural, fantasy or horror books. I realize this is the first book in a series, but I think there needs to be a little more information about the nature of these books.
As it is, I don't plan to read any of the other books in this series because there is no explanation of why everyone in town is trying to kill her.
I read this book really quickly I couldn't put it down. It was well written with a fascinating storyline and well developed and relatabel characters. I loved the relationship between Mischa and Casey which was intense and full of palpable chemisty and the twists and unpredictablility in this book made it an on the edge of my seat read. I really liked it.
This captivating and intense series opener raises lots of questions and has somewhat of a paranormal or supernatural feel to it. Our leads, Mischa and Casey, have strong chemistry between them, and I'm glad author Jaime Winn chose to write from each of their point of views. 'Pull' has me in its grip and I can't wait to find out more in the next installment of this series.
this book just felt so. . . slow. There was so much filler, so much every-day high school stuff. The only time it's not slow it the four times someone tries to kill her. The synopsis of this book sounded really good, and overall I was intrigued and liked it, it just didn't wow me. The characters feel a little lacking in personality, our main girl tells everyone she's fine when she's not and goes along with whatever her boyfriend who she has a strange "pull to" says. Their relationship did feel sudden but it was sweet and he was protective. I liked her best friend. I did not see the twist coming but was also very confused by it. The ending left a lot up to interpretation. I'm hoping we maybe get a second book that clears things up. I'd recommend this book if you like contemporary romance with a twist, this has foreboding visions and is also a thriller. There's a lot of different genres as well as chronic illness rep.
