Thank you to NetGalley, sharper Collins Audio, Avon Books and Laura Jane Williams for an audio ARC in return for an honest review.
The narrators add extra warmth and romance to this already outstanding book, as their voices are perfect for Nic and Ruby and suited them beautifully.
Ruby is leaving London.....
Nic is moving to London.
The characters are quite likeable and their living and employment situations make them interesting and different. Ruby’s strong female character is making huge strides with her “Year of Me.” something a lot of women will relate to. The chemistry between Nic and Ruby is brilliant, the other characters Jackson (Nic's Pansexual friend) for example really added to the story, he's funny, blunt, honest and just what everyone needs in a friend.
This is the third book I have listened to by this author and this like all the others does not disappoint.
There were heavy topics including; Toxic relationships, ageing, death, serious accidents, miscarriage, STDs, and negative family dynamics, these topics all added a realistic aspect to the story.
“I knocked on the door and love answered, well love’s friend and then love came along in hot pants”
Description 🔖
Ruby is about to move out of London. She’s gone through a difficult break up and although it’s not the reason for her move, the move will definitely help. She’s got an exciting opportunity in Manchester and she’s excited for her future.
Nic is leaving Liverpool and moving to London. He’s also gone through a break up and is looking to start his new life with new adventures.
The two of them cross paths and end up spending the night together. It’s obvious to them both that they have a bond that feels different to anything else, but it’s the last day that they will be in London together. Will they cross paths again or will they have to go through life remembering that one night?
General Thoughts 🤔
This was the book my mind and my heart had been looking for for the last couple of weeks. It was the perfect blend of romance, friendships, new beginnings and saucy ooh la la scenes. I was hooked from the moment I started and binged the whole thing simply because I just had to know what was going to happen. It was such a fabulous will they, won’t they.
Characters 👫👭👬
The relationships between all of the characters were a huge part of what made me like this book so much. The obvious relationship between Ruby and Nic gave me all the feels and I felt like I went through every emotion along with them. However it was the other relationships that I think added something a little extra to the story.
As an example, I loved Nic and Jackson’s relationship. They struck up a bromance right from the get go and I loved how supportive they were of each other. I also enjoyed Ruby and Harry’s friendship. I think Ruby needed Harry in her life after leaving her best friends behind in London. Although they didn’t have the same kind of history, they had so much in common and I think that contributed to a gorgeous friendship and future between them.
Writing Style ✍️
This is the first book that I have read by this author and I’d love for it to not be the last. Some romance/chick lit books can give me the ick as I find some of them just way too cheesy. However Laura Jane Williams wrote a story and characters that felt very real to me. It wasn’t all happy endings and kisses and cuddles, it was messy and complicated and that’s real life. I love that she was able to capture that whilst keeping the story romantic.
The story was told from Ruby and Nic’s perspectives and I loved hearing from them both. It was lovely to see how they were both feeling, but also frustrating at times as it was obvious how they both felt to everyone but them.
Conclusion & Scoring 🎖
This book made its way to the top of my TBR at just the right time. I loved every moment of it and found myself smiling, laughing, smirking and getting choked up throughout. A realistic romantic story told through fantastic writing. I definitely recommend this if you are in the mood for feeling all of the feels.
Here we have a lovely story about romance and friendship and for me basically right timing.
Life will bring together the MCs briefly before separates them again. We will see them taking different paths and following their dreams and eventually getting their happy ending.
To me the romance in the plot wasn’t the main thing here as other issues raised in the plot were more important. Following your dreams, putting boundaries, accepting other people, not being afraid to be yourself, loss, rejection, miscarriage and death, were the issues that I will keep from this story and the sensitive way the writer addressed them.
Things I loved:
- Nic’s narration was just wonderful to listen too, I loved that it was a male narrating Nics chapters & female narrating Rubys. It helped you get invested in the story a lot quicker!
- Leads nicely into the split chapters. I liked that it was told from two perspectives! Especially in this sort of romance.
- I loved the banter between Nic & Ruby. It was funny & kept me engaged.
- The romance was sweet & honest
- I liked the side story of JP, I won’t say more as I don’t want to spoil it
- Loved the whole ‘year of me’ concept & how Ruby set out to do things just for her. I think it got a little lost at points but I liked how her relationship with JP helped ground her & nudge her in the right direction
- Some of the twists I didn’t see coming!
- The ending 💕
Things I struggled with:
- The pace was a little all over the place. I loved that it was wrong place, wrong time romance trope & that it was a slow burn but I think it could have been cut down a little
- Ruby’s narration just wasn’t my cup of tea. Especially when she was ‘Nic’. The accent put on ruined the affect. She should have stuck to her own accent & just deepened her voice. I do think she was always going to be outshined by Nic - sorry!
Overall a sweet listen! I’m looking forward to going back & reading the rest of the authors books now!
Story - 2.5 🌟
Audiobook - 1.5 🌟
The story was fine.. The plot follows a girl moving away and a guy just arriving, their friend groups merging and diverging, and is primarily a “right person wrong time” trope x2. There are so many subplots and extra but important characters added in through the middle section which make this quite hard to follow, and it jumps around quite a lot with minimal time in transit.
I read this via audiobook and both the narrators voices just absolutely grated me, and made it way more cheesy and cringey than what it needed to be.
Check the trigger warnings, as it jumps into talks of miscarriage from absolutely nowhere.
This book is soooo good I've actually bookmarked some laugh out loud moments to revisit if im feeling down!! Right up my street!
When Ruby makes a big life decision to leave her fun, house-share, London pad, to go to live in Manchester for new adventures & studies, her last evening literally slaps her in the face when Nic, who has just arrived in London, turns up to buy her sofa! Woohooo... even I felt smitten!
With a bit of flirting combined with her flatmates meddling, Nic is soon enveloped in the gang for a farewell evening.
Despite Ruby's pact of 'no boys for a year' starting 'tomorrow' & with the obvious instant 'sexual' attraction on both parts, they are thrown together for an unforgettable just 'one night'! hmmmm yeah right.
Sadly, with both starting their new lives it seems no further contact would be had, until who would think an STD could reunite a little positive contact!
The novel spans real friendships over many, many years. Several unexpected meetings with yet unsuccessful declarations of love despite it being so damn obvious they care for each other!
The development of both main characters as they mature is endearing & relateable & so many laugh out loud moments.
So lovely to see how Nics sweet personality & confidence grows as does his new friendship networks.
Ruby's struggles with her BFF is very relatable too, especially when the boys come into the mix!
Ruby's filming & journey with JP & his 'Long lost love' was heartfelt & dare I say sadly 'unpredictable'. This brought a tear to my eye.
This book has it all. A true roller coaster of emotions. One Night With You really did become a lifetime... Nice to know it could happen!
With sincere stories & with an amazing, wonderful narration to boot, LJW has created another wonderful, perfect, romcom.
Thoroughly recommend to all you ROMCOM LOVERS! 🌟
Thank you to Laura Jane Williams and HarperCollins UK Audio via NetGalley for allowing me the opportunity to listen to this advance copy of this audiobook in exchange for my honest review. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Ruby is leaving for Manchester, Nic has just arrived in London. They have a chance encounter when he buys her sofa.
I really liked the JP story line, although the Candice fued seemed a bit unncessary. Jackson seems like the kind of friend we all need. I really liked the jackson and Nic storyline and felt it was done well, but I almost wish Nic and Ruby didn't get together at the end. I really enjoyed how they were able to be very mature about their situations and also about Millie, so I think for them not to end up with their 'happily ever after' could have added another layer to the book.
I did enjoy the narration, but felt the book was just slightly too long and drawn out.
I really enjoyed the audiobook of this story it really brought the book to life. The actors did a great job and added to the whole story.
Unfortunately the story itself wasn't for me.
I really enjoyed this audiobook. The two voice actors played their part well. I enjoyed the journey of discovery that both characters went on throughout the book.
A really heartfelt romance, with heartbreak and shock twists that I really didn’t expect. I loved hearing stories from Nic and Ruby and how the timing of their meeting played out as they got to know each other. A book that touches on really difficult topics so please check the trigger warnings before reading this.
I liked all of the characters in this book and found the plot really interesting and gripping. A very enjoyable read.
I really enjoyed this new one by Laura Jane Williams! I really liked both Ruby and Nic’s characters and enjoyed how their relationship started and then developed. It was such a frustrating but heartwarming book at times and you really wanted to bash their heads together but I loved seeing their journey both together and apart and did really like the ending!
I was lucky enough to receive this for free via NetGalley in audiobook version.
What a great story. I loved that the story was told from both a female and male perspective. I loved the characterisation and I enjoyed how you stayed with the characters over a few years.
The book tells the story of Ruby and Nick who are thrown together through the sale of sofa. One thing leads to another and Ruby and Nick end up being a big part of each levers life’s. Throw in a quirky old man , a love story that will break your heart and a perfect ending and you have One night with you.
I absolutely loved this book!.
I felt all the emotions and did not want this book to end. This book could just keep going in my opinion.
This was a fun and easy listen. I was dipping in and out for the first few chapters due to other commitments but then I just couldn't stop and binged the last 3 quarters of the book. I initially thought that the introduction (Ruby/Nick) at the beginning of each chapter was going to irk me but it really didn't. There was humour, banter, love and affection throughout the story as well as a few emotional moments.
If you love rom-coms you will LOVE this book!
I received a complimentary copy of this book by Laura Jane Williams from HarperCollins UK Audio via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for the opportunity
Ruby’s leaving London. She’s not running away from her ex per se, but an exciting opportunity in a new city has landed at the perfect time.
Nic is moving to London. After a bad break-up, he’s excited to see where big-city life could take him.
When a chance meeting throws the pair of them together for just one night, it’s clear that this could be the start of something special. But there’s one problem: she’s leaving, and he’s just arriving. So, after tonight, they’ll never see each other again . . . will they?
This was a little predictable....I enjoyed the audiobook but I wasn't fully gripped, I'm not sure if I read it physically if I would experience it differently but it was still a good story that comes with it's twists and turns to get to that happy ending.
Nick and Ruby meet on Ruby's last night in London and Nick's first night. It's a chance encounter but sparks are instant. Since they are on different paths, their romance doesn't have a chance. This is a will they or won't they type of book. I thought it was a good read with characters that are fun and interesting. I really enjoyed the narration of the audiobook. There is growth of the characters individually as well as as a couple which I liked. Overall a great listen.

Ruby is leaving London to follow her dreams. Nick is arriving in London to follow his. They meet, sparks fly, a magical night follows. But they both know it is just a one night stand. Both of them go off on different ways, but occasionally are brought together where they discover there is real magic. However they still are going in different directions so this could never work out. Or could it? Great narration, nice story
I’ve had a very up and down journey with Laura Jane Williams books, mainly that I really want to like them as I love her as a person, but they are very hit and miss storylines for me. This is the second of hers that I have listened to as an audiobook and I have to say the narrators were good, they really helped bring the book to life and it was enjoyable to listen to.
Sadly I think that’s where the positives end. The storyline was very rambling and certain plot points just seemed to have been thrown in to try and make it a bit more interesting. I wasn’t overly invested in the characters at all and even by halfway I just got wanted it to wrap up as it was overly lengthy in my opinion. In short, unless you’re a die hard Fan i wouldn’t be recommending this one.
One Night With You really excited me upon reading the description! I loved the whole idea of meeting someone and them being perfect for you, but it's the wrong time and wrong place. I feel like that's not often done in romance so I was looking forward to a cute long-distance romance where the characters could make it work.
I really enjoyed listening to Ruby's perspective. I found her whole year of me thing a little annoying but as her experiences became clearer I could see her motivation behind it. The main reason I loved her perspective was because of her film studies and her film project. I found the story about JP and his sweetheart really adorable and I was desperate to know what happened to them. That's what kept me coming back to this book! I found Nic's perspective to be quite slow at times and I couldn't really relate to his character very much.
The romance element was often quite slow and subtle. It wasn't always at the centre of the novel and whilst I didn't mind that I did think it would play a slightly bigger role. This book is definitely more about the characters growing and developing both on their own and together. It's a heartfelt and sweet read, that has quite a few surprises up its sleeve. It's not the full-blown romance I was expecting, but it was a nice read nonetheless..
I listened to Laura Jane Williams “one stop” and I absolutely loved it! It’s not something I usually read. I’m not usually a “will they won’t they” trope but I really like how Laura writes them!
Ruby is living her last night in London before moving to Manchester. When she sells her sofa and meets Nic, a guy who just moved to London to escape a breakup, she is greeted with instant sparks and the feeling is mutual.
But ruby moves to Manchester and Nic stays in London. And they move on from their lives.
I really loved how ruby and Nic are so mature and cute. They accepted that they weren’t ready for each other and went their seperate ways while sort of still being friends. It was refreshing that we didn’t get that toxic jealousy and pettiness I’m used to reading.
This was a little predictable though I was still sad that pj never got to meet his long lost love properly. And they just missed! I was not expecting Jackson though! I was praying he would be okay along with them!!
Overall I really enjoyed it, it wasn’t my favourite type of book (I personally don’t absolutely adore “will they won’t they” books) but this is a book i will think about and smile every once in a while. The characters moved me and I will hold them dear to my heart.
Thank you netgalley and the publishers for allowing me to read this arc in exchange of my honest opinion
I am now discovering the true joys of audiobooks and it’s thanks to authors like LJW and the fabulous narrators that bring the stories to life. I did have the arc ebook, but was scared I wouldn’t get round to reading it in time because of training for my new job, so I cheekily requested the audio arc as well and was so blessed to have been granted that. .
The narrators had me laughing, gasping and even crying. They really made Nic & Ruby seem real. And people I’d love to be friends with or even date lol. Sending so much love and praise to the narrators.
I do love reading along, but it’s brilliant having the ability to do simple things like housework and still able to devour the book.
(Below is the review for the ebook arc which obviously applies to the audiobook too).
When I love a book, I can struggle with writing a review. Putting my thoughts down on paper (as it were) is an impossible feat, so forgive me if this seems rather basic.
Okay, so this may sound a little OTT, but I have no other way to describe this book other than pure Romcom perfection!
I have nothing but love for this book and everything in it. Yes, it’s hilarious and has plenty of moments of gorgeous love, but it is more than a romcom. It’s a beautiful reflection of real life.
Nic and Ruby are the central characters, but as with real life, it’s never straightforward, and we can find our life taking a completely different route to the one we had planned or expected. That life’s complexities make us realise we never know what can happen. From chance encounters to love long gone but never forgotten and, of course, how a goodbye can turn into a hello. It is all part of life’s rich tapestry and is reflected beautifully in this book.
The whole crew are brilliant. There isn’t a character I didn’t love. JP especially stole my heart. He is adorable.
This book has love, friendships, fallouts, heartbreak and surprises galore.
Honestly, I could gush about this book all day, every day. It’s one of my top favourite romcoms, and Laura Jane Williams is now a firm favourite author.
I cannot leave this review without mentioning the brilliant imagery. Now, I know that may seem like a fantasy book term, but LJW words bring these characters to life. As I have an arc, there’s no guarantee this line will be in the book but using it as an example of the delightful imagery and how these few words make the character come alive.
-I bob my head from side to side and exaggerate my chewing, the universal sign for ‘Hold on - my mouth is full’-
I can easily picture that in my head and instantly laugh with the image but also knowing that, yes, I’ve done that too! It’s pure brilliance!
And another shout out for fabulous LGBTQ rep.
A massive thank you to NetGalley & Harper Collins for the arc ebook. It was a pure joy to read.
And thank you, Laura Jane Williams. Your stories are funny as hell and have so much heart.
