Kiva is back in the prison where the story started, but even worse off than at the beginning. Addicted to a powerful drug and with all her friends either dead or parted from her, she finds an unlikely ally in Cresta, her former enemy.
When soldiers come to release her from the prison on the orders of her sister, she thinks that circumstances may improve for her, but she finds herself imprisoned again. Managing to escape with the help of new allies, she ends up back in Evalon with the people she had betrayed in the last book. But her magic is needed for them to be able to use a magical device which may help them win back the throne. As is often the case in fantasy they have to undertake a journey in order to find the parts of the device which takes them to new realms within Wenderall. Although they don′t stay long in each realm, they are richly described, and I thought the world-building held together very well.
I particularly liked two aspects of the book, one that it showed friendships that were as important as the main romance, and Cresta′s blunt honesty and quips which I found a delight. The climatic battle is well described in its use of magic, and involves some unexpected loss before the resolution.
Although I found the first book the most interesting of the trilogy because of its prison background, this is a good conclusion to the story.
I had a copy of this book early through Netgalley
What a ride Kiva’s journey has been! This series has quickly become one of my favorite YA series and I couldn’t wait for the finale.
One of the things I loved in this third book was the solidarity between the female characters. They not only save themselves, but they save each other time and time again and their friendship is genuinely one of the best things in the book. Cresta’s evolution especially made her my second favorite character.
The author’s note made me fear that Kiva’s struggles would last much longer, but it was indeed tackled with a lot of care. From the first book, I loved the fact that the author never shies away from showing darker sides of YA, which was very refreshing.
All this being said, this book was still my least favorite of the three. I ended being annoyed by the number of chapters in this trilogy ending with Kiva being knocked out, and the fact that every time she finally did something proactive or fought back, it was portrayed as an extremely decisive moment, like she was finally becoming a badass, but then it was all forgotten until the next time.
The other things that annoyed me and sort of spoiled the ending for me, was that it got really sappy with the feelings, especially from 75% on. That’s something that doesn’t work for me, although I understand that it’s a question of personal taste. Even if the angst between Kiva and Jaren was based on the dreaded miscommunication trope, I was all there for it; from the second it was resolved, the dialogues became too cliché and Kiva spent the rest of the book thinking about how much she loved everyone. Which is nice, truly, but we already knew she loved them all, and although I understand that love is her core emotion, the narration turned very repetitive. That last part of the book was the least engaging part of the trilogy for me, for that reason.
My final criticism would be that some of the plot twists, and specifically one of the final identity reveals, felt a bit too convenient and overused in this third book. I would have loved this to be resolved differently and it made the finale fall short of what it could have been.
However, I still had such an amazing time reading the entire trilogy, which I binged in less than a week. The best part of the books was Caldon. He was hands down the funniest character and I loved every minute he was on the page; his relationship with Kiva was also one of my favorite and their interactions never failed to make me laugh.
I’ll definitely recommend this series to all my friends, thank you Lynette Noni.
This is young adult fantasy and is the third book in the Prison Healer series.
This picks up right after book 2, with our main character back in the prison and she needs to find a way out, to then defeat her sister who has taken over the kingdom from the rightful royals. To do this, she needs to go on a quest with a group of reluctant allies to track down 4 magical rings.
As with the previous two books, there are aspects of this that I really liked but also aspects that I found frustrating. Both the book and the series are good, but I think it could have been great.
While generally in a book the plot unfolds as events happen, with this it's very easy to see that events happen just to further the plot. For example, in this book the return to the prison at the start of the book is purely there to pull another character into the group of allies and is very quickly dealt with - by making a slight of mockery of this impossible to escape death prison which has now been breached multiple times!
It just feels like slightly lazy writing in parts - the characters change to fit the needs of the story, rather than feeling like they're going through any kind of growth. Kiva has to be smart and capable to survive book 1, then book 2 requires her to be the complete opposite of smart, and this book has to have her blindly trusting of people she's just met. Cresta meanwhile gets a completely new personality for this book to justify joining the gang.
I am interested in what this author does next, but hope that she gets challenged more not to just make easy writing choices
The blood traitor was a real page turner and I couldn’t put it down! What an amazing end to a great series. To be quite honest, it has been the best book I’ve read in a long time. I loved all the characters and the sneaky little plot twists. Definitely recommend.
Yes, Yes, Yes ......... This was one of my most anticipated books of this year, due to how much I enjoyed all of the previous books so much, Kiva is such a fantastic character and I loved where this last book really pushed her to be more.
This was a perfect concussion to a fantastic series, and now I'm off to buy this in hardback!
Loved it. I loved the series and I loved this one too! The characters and the story ughhh!
thank you to netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an arc of this book.
Wow wow wow - What a brilliant ending to this trilogy!
After loving The Prison Healer and The Gilded Cage I was worried that the final instalment wouldn’t live up to expectations, but honestly The Blood Traitor might be my favourite of the three!
At the end of The Gilded Cage, Kiva has come full circle and is on her way back to Zalindov. Despite what it means for Kiva, it was nice to return to this setting and some of the familiar characters that were left behind in book two.
There’s also some further world building, outside of Zalindov. In typical YA fantasy style the protagonists have a quest to fulfil, this allows us glimpses into other kingdoms and their courts. I would definitely be interested in some of these worlds being expanded further.
The quest is entertaining but the real strengths of this book are the characters and the emotional depth. With plenty of returning characters and a handful of new ones there are quite a lot! Somehow, they’re all essential to the plot and well developed. The Gilded Cage ended with Kiva and Jaren’s relationship in a very rocky place, honestly my heart broke for them during several of their interactions. I’m never a fan of the miscommunication trope but I didn’t mind it so much hear which is testament to how well written these characters are, as individuals and as a couple.
Just like in the two previous books, there are some brilliant twists at the end. I was getting worried that there wouldn’t be enough time for the final scenes and to wrap everything up, the ending is quite packed and much faster paced than the rest of the story but I was left feeling more than satisfied with the ending.
This trilogy has been a journey and will definitely remain a favourite of mine!
Thank you so much to Netgalley and the publishers for an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The perfect end to an exciting and fresh YA fantasy series! Lynette Noni delivers yet again with loveable characters, fast-paced action, plot twists, romance and one of the best depictions of the found-family trope I have ever read. I loved how we went back to the prison for the last book and how it highlighted the character growth of Kiva and some of her other inmates. I adored the addition of the new characters and Noni managed to create quite an ensemble cast without it ever feeling like too much. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone looking for a fun, fast-paced and romantic YA/NA fantasy series.
I made the choice to reread the first two books in the series and I think that's what I would recommend for anyone planning on picking this up, I definitely feel like the emotional payoff of The Blood Traitor, with all it's various character arcs, is all the more satisfying seeing it flow through from right at the start. You won't be totally lost if you go in cold but you'll be missing a little bit of that satisfaction.
Overall I thought this was a decent ending to the series and I think die-hard fans will be very pleased. For me, someone who liked the books well enough but wouldn't say it was a favourite series I felt as though this suffered a little as a trilogy, feeling as though worldbuilding elements and plot devices were thrown in here at the very last minute for the sake of sending the characters on a quest. On the one hand that does lean into a lot of the cliches of YA that make this series enjoyable but the flipside of that is it does feel a. bit eye-rolling at times. One of the things that made book one so strong was the sense of structure and purpose to the events where by book three it almost feels like adventure for the sake of adventure.
I think I am mostly dissapointed because I really wanted this series to dig into the idea of incarceration as punishment and really examine that through a fantasy lense and instead got a fairly generic YA series that didn't push boundaries particularly far. That might be exactly what you want to read right now but for me I wanted a little more meat on these bones.
I would say this is overall a series that many will enjoy but that doesn't quite transcend into being a favourite for me - I am glad I finished it but I won't be recommending it wildly to everyone.
My rating: 3/5 stars
I received a free digital copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley - all opinions are my own.
I loved this series and this was the highly entertaining and gripping end that kept me turning pages.
The author is a good storyteller and delivers a well plotted story that leaves no plot hole and add details to the world building.
The characters are fleshed out and I appreciated their evolution and arc.
There were some repetitions and some moments when it dragged a bit.
I enjoyed it and it's recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
OH.EM.GEE!!! What a way to end the trilogy! The Blood Traitor kicks off exactly where The Gilded Cage ends, we miss out on NOTHING!
This book tied up ends and literally made me gasp with the twists! There was excitement, trauma and pain. Then there was smiles, cheers and love! Can you have too many emotions when reading a book?
I’m devastated that the journey has come to an end, but I feel like I’m content with the close of the last chapter.
If you haven’t read this yet, chop chop! It’s out now and believe me when I say, your missing out!!
The Blood Traitor by Lynette Noni
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - 5 stars
What a read! I've been dying to read this installment in the Prison Healer series since I finished book two so finding out I'd been approved by NetGalley for their ARC copy I was over the moon. This book definitely lived up to the hype and definitely had me on the edge of my seat while reading. Honestly while reading this book I was on an emotional rollercoaster but I just couldn't put it down and read it all in two days! I Loved it so much I'm trying to get my hands on a physical copy to annotate and keep on my shelf.
the ebook was kindly gifted to me via @netgalley but all options are my own.
I love this book. I loved this trilogy.I have become so invested in this story and these characters I am sad its now over 😢 This was fast paced right from the start. It had laughing, crying and angry all the feels and emotions. I really don't know what to do with myself now... is it too soon to reread.
Thank you to Netgalley, Hodder & Stoughton and Lynette Noni for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Lynette is a wonderful writer. Her books are so rich with intricate world building and fascinating characters, woven into a plot with many twists and turns that it's impossible to put down! The Blood Traitor is the perfect conclusion to a very thrilling and, in my honest opinion, underrated series and one that I'll recommend time and time again.
I'm going to miss these characters (Jaren in particular).
I absolutely loved every minute of this book! It was by far my favourite in the series. While the other 2 books were still good, they did get a bit slow at certain points. However this one was so much more fast paced than the others. There was constantly intriguing plot and action going on, and the excitement started from early on in the book and never stopped.
Kiva really shows in this book just how strong of a person she is. There were many times where my heart ached for her. She definitely goes through a lot of hardship and emotion in this book, but she really is a survivor.
I absolutely love all these characters and love how this book turned the story into one with a found family. While Kiva and Jaren have my heart, I somehow fell even more for the arrogant, charming Caledon. I love his constant support for Kiva, they are the epitome of friendship goals.
While there were a lot of great twists in this book, especially towards the end, one of the biggest plot twists was seeing a very minor character I hated originally become both more important to the story and one of my favourite characters (ever?).
While the other books weren't 5 star reads for me, this last book really cemented this series as a top YA series of mine.
Thank you to @netgalley and @hodderbooks for giving me this eArc.
What a stunning end to an amazing trilogy. I'm not sure what I'll do now without Kiva and the gang.
Lynette Noni is definitely an instant buy author for me now, I cant wait to see what she comes out with next.
The Blood Traitor is the amazing conclusion of one of my most recent favorite series. It starts with so much desperation and sorrow, Kiva needs to heal and needs to come out from the black hole in which she ended up being. Of course it’s not easy to do when you know you have betrayed both your family and the person you love. Bit by bit we follow her taking back her life and her happiness.
I really love how the story is structured, the first part is slow but not in a bad way, it focuses on Kiva’s healing (and Cresta here is just amazing, seriously AMAZING). The second part is faster, with a quest which is a theme I really love.
I was absolutely in tears when Tipp finally forgave her and that’s just one of the reminders you have in this book that your real family is the one that you choose for yourself, the one that supports you and forgives you. So maybe Kiva is a Blood Traitor to her own blood, but she’ll never be a traitor of her true family. I only wish we had this little gang all together in all three books because I loved seeing all of them interact.
And I hope you all know what we are going to do now that’s over. Now we dream (of Lynette Noni releasing another amazing series).
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC.
Wow, Noni does not disappoint in this whirlwind of a conclusion to the Prison Healer trilogy. It was everything we've come to expect from the last two books (apart from a cliffhanger ending, thankfully!) and much more. I did see one of the character twists coming, but that didn't make it any less enjoyable. I love these books and this trilogy is one of the most satisfying and exciting I've read in years.
This book had it all. I love the beautiful cover, it really fits the beauty of the story. Reading about Kiva and her fight for what she believed in made me feel all the feels. I laughed, teared up, held my breath and was relieved. A rightful end to a great story. I highly recommend this series!
Was I terrified to read this book? Yes. Because I knew it meant the end for the journey I started with The Prison Healer last year.
Was it worth every minute of the read? Yes. My favourite book in the trilogy, I loved every single minute of the twists and turns of this book, Kiva and Jaren's story was just pure perfection here, no matter what they went through to get to where they ended up. I am a sucker for big drama in my fictional relationships, and this book delivered.
I loved the fact that the twists that came along were so unexpected and I will definitely be looking at reading some of Lynette Noni's other works, because her writing style is something I just loved.
