I really appreciate the direction this book takes. It isn't one of those super energetic "you can do it" pinspo type workout books. It is very straightforward in dealing with the realities of life and mental illness on working out. It looks at working out and motivation from various different angles and suggests that you skip ahead if you know something isn't going to speak to you. I've never seen a workout book like this, and as someone who struggles with depression and sometimes simply doesn't want to, this might be my favorite book ever. It even has workouts that you can do in bed.
What a lovely and encouraging book. As someone who did not have a good time in PE growing up, I appreciate that professional trainer Sarah Kurchak has written a book for people who are not elated at the prospect of exercise. There are chapters on weight lifting, strength training, etc., but presented with creative alternatives if you're not a gym person. (She doesn't disparage anyone who enjoys going to the gym, either.) There are even lists of exercises you can do if you don't feel up to leaving your bed. Work It Out will meet you where you are.
The only thing I would have appreciated is illustrations or photos to go with the lists of suggested exercises. I am a visual learner and want to make sure I'm doing things right to avoid injury.
This book would be a good addition to any public library collection.
